Well, after spending most of the night awake and worrying about having to move...it turns out I had nothing to worry about. I called the apartment onwers this morning and talked to a woman that handles our complex. I told her what the manager had told me about the 2 new rules (an additional $315.00 deposit for nicotine damage and the apartments becoming a smoke free complex). She seemed really surprised to hear about this and told me that there is no plans to make a smoke free complex...at least in the individual apartments. The public buildings (office, laundry room, ect.) yes, they are no smoking areas. However, they can't make the apartments like that b/c they are a corporation and they receive federal funding. They said it would be disciminating for them to do that and that non-smokers as well as smokers are protected. I told her I just wanted to find out for sure b/c with Hubby being disabled if we had to move we would need to have as much time as possible. She said that was fine and there were no plans to do anything like that. As for the deposit, she said they had been discussing that and it might happen down the road but wouldn't affect us b/c we would be grandfathered in. She said anyone new moving in after they add that rule would have to pay it but not ones already here. Talk about a load off my mind!! I also found out that 2 bedroom apartments/houses in our area are going for $500.-$750. a month, you pay all the utilities, some accept pets but out of the 8 I found 6 said no smoking. I am so glad we don't have to worry about this anymore. I can quit worrying and go back to enjoying my days. Not to mention Hubby is doing a happy dance this morning. LOL Do you think it's fair to ban smoking in apartments/houses that you rent? Does your home have a no smoking rule? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~~~

I don't smoke but my hubby does and he goes outside.. I think our apartments rule is you can smoke but not in the apartment.. Which honestly i don't see anything wrong with smoking outside.. I don't think they should completely ban people from apartments or homes cause they smoke.. but having a rule like ours that you can smoke but not inside if fine.. Don't see anything wrong with that.. Glad to hear that you don't have to worry bout all that moving stuff.. i know what thats like we just moved and it sucks.. we are still unpacking. been here bout a month. Its such a hassle

I'm all for the smoking bans in public places but I think stopping people smoking in their own home is going a bit far (unless there is a good reason of course. I don't know what a good reason might be. Possible non-related people sharing an apartment where the rooms have been let out seperately or something) We rent our house and there is no rule about smoking. My partner smokes and the only rule here is that he doesn't smoke around the kids or while we're eating.

I had just been reading your other discussion about this, and I had seen your responses about not having to move after all, so I decided to come to this discussion and respond. Yaaaayyyyy! Goody for you hon! Moving is such a pain in the rear end, especially with how expensive rent is nowadays. And the smoking thing? I don't think it's right to even attempt to put people out or charge them more because they smoke. I can see the management making the public buildings smoke free, but not the apartments. That's just crazy! Anyway, I'm very happy for you hon. Tell your hubby not to hurt himself doing that happy dance. LOL! Hugs!

I'm happy for you. Having to move is so stressful. My place is non smoking but they do allow pets and that was a major for us. I think that we pay so much for rent what we do in our space should be up to us unless it is hurting some other tenant.

My g/f and I smoke quite heavily, so the thought of living in a non smoking apartment/house would not be an option! But last June (in the UK) smoking became illegal in all public buildings, including the working place, train stations, airports, pubs, clubs and restaurants, basically anywhere that isnt your home, although If for instance the plumber came to fix the taps and asked us not to smoke, he is legally entitled to do so as it then becomes his place of work temperilly!!! I can understand a smoking ban in offices etc but I think it is extremely unfair to restaurant, pub and club owners to have this law enforced on them because as a result of this outlandish law alot of business have gone out of business, to those who do smoke know that a pint in the pub with a smoke goes hand in hand, and a ciggie after a meal is the perfect dessert lol. I just feel if you want to smoke then smoke and if you dont, great you'll save alot of money and your health but dont preach to me about it, its my choice, always has been, no-one forced me to start and at this present time in live I have no intentions of quitting! Keep smiling :)
