What makes you loyal to a TV series/programs?

Do you watch your favourite TV programs because it has a good story line or is it the actors and the roles they play that keep you hooked? For me, I am a big fan of Friends and was upset when they decided to stop filming. Joey was one of my favourite characters so I was pleased to hear that Joey (the spin off) was coming to our screen. I tried to get into it but couldn't. It just didn't compare with Friends and I think the reason why Friends worked so well was the 6 characters combined and how well it worked as a team. Joey was still Joey but I didn't find him AS funny without his comrades. I still watch the re-runs of Friends and it still makes me laugh even though I know what's going to happen and what's going to be said! So what makes you go back for more?

nyoks! im not really a big fan of friends. lol. or i havent even watched a single episode of it. but, answering your first question. i watched tv programs if 1) they get me hooked, 2) its catchy enough and 3) a good dialog and catchy and funny lines. the show that im watching from time to time was Charmed. not because of the magical sisters or the plot. it was just that it was not heavy or too light. and it had a great catchy dialog and atmosphere.

Not everyone is a Friends fan - one of my friends just can't get into it at all and she can't understand what the fuss is about. Even her sons try to make her watch it but she just doesn't like it. I watch Charmed too - never used to, but again I caught a few episodes and was hooked and have seen every single episode until the end. I like magical or supernatural stories - serves as escapism for me!

For me, it's the characters. A great show has characters I care about and great story lines. But, I've watched shows even after they were no longer good, because I was still invested in at least one of the characters. If I can't care about the characters, I don't care about the show.

I think the story lines are important with great characters that make me laugh is required for a comedy. This is the reason Friends and Everybody Hates Raymond were great, but Joey didn't work for me.

I think firstly it has to be a storyline that will grip me for tv dramas or sitcoms. When I was younger and the first series of the OC came out I was totally gripped by the whole Ryan and Marissa storyline. Like the whole Ross and Rachel saga in friends... However I think character is a very important factor as to why I tune into a show. Take Viva la Bam for example. No storyline whatsoever but the relationship and a tendency to be able to relate to the people on screen is what keeps me hooed enough to buy the dvd...
