Do kids in your neighborhood do chores for money?

When I lived in Arizona, you had to hire professionals if you needed any household chore done. Here in Ohio, the kids are eager to do anything to earn money--rake yards, pick up dog poop, shovel snow, etc. I remember doing those things to earn money when I was a kid. It was hard work usually but that was a fact of life if you needed money as we and most people I knew were too poor to have allowances. We got along, but there was no extra for the kids to spend. I like being in a place where kids actually learn to earn money. It's more dear to them that way and they spend it more wisely. Do your neighborhood kids ask to do chores for you? And do you try to let them learn monetary responsibility by hiring them, if you're able to?

Noone has ever asked. I remember we did all the time when I was a kid. I think it is a good thing that kids do small jobs and save up for things they really want. it is a good lesson and eases them in to the workforce

It seems as if parents are protecting their kids from worry nowadays, including financial responsibility. I think it started about twenty years ago and we can see the fruits of that protection now with the rampant credit debt.

I get some boy/girl scouts occasionally. I'm a sucker for kids doing fundraisers, especially the scouts! I had a boy scout last year selling popcorn canisters (full) and was shocked to learn that his scoutmaster had set the boys' goal for at least one thousand dollars! I bought a $50 canister because I saw that he didn't have many sales and they were all for the cheapest stuff. When he delivered my can a month later, he thanked me and said when people saw my sale on the sheet they ordered more expensive stuff. He made his goal! He was a small, overweight kid with no friends and got made fun of a lot and his terrific sales performance exceeded everyone else in his troop. Guess he really showed 'em! Damned snobs... His mom was with him. I remember feeling good that a mom would treasure her child enough to be so involved.

I am afraid that we do not have any kids in the neighborhood - other than our own. They do chores because they are part of the family and need to take part of the families responsibility. When we did have a neighbor kid a few years back he used to ride over with his fathers lawn mower and trim our yard, which was much welcomed by my poor dear husband who works such awful and long hours.

Good for you! So many families nowadays don't have their kids do chores. I'm so glad, too, that you appreciate your husband's hard work. With that attitude, I'm sure he also appreciates yours.
