Scents and smells from childhood no more .... What are your memories?

When I was young, I remember smelling the scent of orange blossoms as there were orange trees all around the neighborhood that I lived in. Today, most of the orange trees in the County of Orange, Calfornia have been replaced by freeways, roads, houses, business districts and shopping malls. I am wondering if there are things that you remembered smelling in your area when you were younger that you do not smell at all now?

Yes, I remember some scents from my childhood...some of them I can't really place. Sometimes I get a whiff of a similar scent and before I try to figure out where it's coming from and how I remember it, it's gone. But I remember the scent of an eraser that I had..lol and a special arabic dish that my mother would make. And the smell of the desert (I grew up in the Middle East)...and lol...the smell of my water bottle that I took one year of kindergarten! It's years since I've been to the place that I grew up at. But I used to spend my vacations in India...and I miss all the smells that I experienced there during harvest time. We don't have the paddy fields anymore...and so there's no harvesting...so no fresh cowdung smearing...and no separating the grain....and no cooking it to separate the husk...nothing's there anymore.

You miss a lot of smells from the past, ones that I have never had the pleasure of smelling. It is sad sometimes that the past becomes the present when these memories are left behind yet it is good to be alive to savor these memories.

Yes when i was about 5 when i still lived in Morayfield, there was mango trees everywhere(the good kind, the ones that dont stink). Now we have moved and live right next to a main road and all i smell are car fumes. I miss the mangos hugely.

Ah the smell of mango trees... something that I have never smelled but as the fruits are sweet, I am imagining what they must have smelled like to you. I am sorry about the car fumes.
