Do you buy your vegetables

Do you buy your fruits and vegetables or do you plant them and dig them up and pick them? My parents live next door to me and they have wild scallop onions that grow in one area of their yard. My mom has given me permission to dig as many up as I want and freeze them. She dug me some up about a month ago and I cleaned them up, cut them up, and then put them in the freezer. Well, today I went out and dug some more up so that I would have more onions and so I could get some cut up for my mom and my husband's mom. I know frozen onions don't cost that much at the store, but with the prices of everything going up every little bit helps. I've been thinking about planting some other vegetables as well so that we don't have to buy them. Trying to cut costs without cutting back on what we eat. And the onions taste great in soup.

I have always just bought my vegetables, but I would really like to try growing them sometime. It seems like it would be helpful to save a little money, and it would be nice to have really fresh vegetables! It would be sort of fun to cook with the vegetables knowing you grew them yourself. :) My husband and I will be moving in the near future, but I think that when we get settled in, I would like to try growing some of our own fruits and vegetables.

I agree that it would be fun to give it a try. And cooking with vegetables that you grew is better, I think, than store bought. Mainly because you know they are fresh.

I never really thought about a garden as a hobby, but I can see how it could be. I think it's great that your grandpa has a garden as a hobby.

I have an apartment with a balcony so we do grow some. I am hoping to get one of those Aerogardens to help supplement the vegetables that we buy.

I'll have to look into an aerogarden and see what they are about.

I would love to grow my own vegetables, but I live in an apartment and I don't even have a balcony. I've tried growing them indoors, but there were a ton of problems. I have been able to grow herbs indoors, though. But, things like tomatoes, spinach, etc, didn't do well and were a mess. So, I buy all my vegetables. Luckily, the store where I buy them have really fresh produce at good prices.

Yeah, I would think that growing them inside would be a little messy. I haven't thought about growing herbs. That's a good idea. It's good that you have a place nearby to get your fruits and vegetables from at a good price.

I usually buy our fruit at the farmers markets here or directly from the farmers when in season. They are much fresher, taste better and helps the farmers out.As for the vegetables, we grow them in our yard. My husband and I do this every year and it is almost time to plant now. We will be roto-tilling the garden a little later today and maybe starting to plant our red, yukon gold and white potatoes today. Next weekend we will go to a farmers market and buy starter plants of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, pepper, zuccini, yellow squash, pumpkin and 3 types of tomatoes from the Farmers and plant them. We also plant by seed our cucumbers, green (bush) beans, yellow beans, carrots, radishes, turnips, peas and I think that is it. I also have garlic, rosemary, dill and mint which are planted by the fence to help keep varmints out along with the flowers. We have friends and family that like to come over and help plant and harvest and they gt to take what we reap home too. It is a friendship garden and our hobby.

That sounds really neat. Is it easier to start a garden by seeds or plants?

I will keep that in mind. I am thinking of buying some plants and doing some as seeds.

We usually find it easier to buy starter plants of the "head" variety, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce and tomatoes. We don't have much room in the house to start them and they can be hard to get hardy and strong roots. They are not that expensive to buy at the farmers market and the are of good quality. The root vegetables and corn you really need to start as seed directly in the ground.

I prefer to grow my own, but most of the year I have to buy them from the store! I will buy frozen and fresh vegetables. I remember the wild scallions growing back east! Tey do not seem to be wild here on the west coast! We do get fruit from trees that friends and neighbors have, sometimes, and other times we have to buy frozen and fresh!

I am thinking about trying to grow my own and trying to freeze some of the vegetables. Hopefully that will keep me from having to buy a lot.

It is really easy to grow some vegetables, even inside your house! I used my kitchen table when I had a window that made it quite warm! Worked out better than putting the plants outside, since insects and animals can eat your plants. I started with lettuce and tomatoes, as well as strawberries and sprouts! You can use a water-only system, if you do not want soil in the house! I would search online for instructions. Where I live, the sun can get too hot in the summer months and actually burn the food and dry out the plants!

I didn't think about strawberries. I will have to add those to my list. I would rather not try to start it inside my home. With it being outside I know my mom will walk over and help out. She lives next door and I plan on sharing what I grow with her.

Yeah, I buy them. I was @ walmart the other day and wanted to get a few potted plants... like cukes & tomatoes. I live in an apartment, so I could have a little potted garden on my balcony LOL.

Yes, you could! My older brother was telling me the other day that he use to have an indoor garden where the plants were potted. It's a great idea! Good luck!

I wish I could grow my own but living in an apartment...it just isn't going to happen. I do plan to visit the Farmer's Market this summer though...I would prefer fresh veggies and fruits over store bought any day of the week. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Yeah, living in an apartment does make it difficult to grow a garden.

Wish I did have room to grow my own as it costs to uy then and I use a lot of veggies in my health plan. I do get some breaks as I have a Von's club card so get discount of my produce and they really are pretty good discounts too.I love onions as you can do so much with them.I buy onions and carrots and potatoes in five lb lots so they are cheaper that way and I love to make stews with meat and veggies.

Yes, I buy all my vegetables and fruits. I think t's nice to grow some vegetables and fruits in the garden but our place is not suitable for gardening. I have tried planting some, but it eventually dried. Some survived but it is not of good quality. I don't think I have green thumb too. So, I think it is better for me to buy. I can choose the ones which are fresh and of good quality.

My mom has always said that she didn't have a green thumb. I am going to start off with a small garden this year and if it does good, I will do a bigger one next year.

I grow as much as I can myself. I'm very lucky and we have lots of land, but it's something that's really important to me and I used to grow some things even when I had far less space. I grow my own because of the cost but also because I can control what conditions they grow in and because I enjoy it. Last year we were able to be self sufficient in most vegetables and fruit from late Spring through till about Novemeber which was the first time we've had so much. It was a lovely feeling, eating a completely home produced meal. This year I am a little behind but the garden is all prepared, just awaiting seedlings. I think I will buy some which is cheating but a good option at this stage.

I live in a condo and my balcony faces North so nothing grows, I have tried a few time. I am fortunate my son and wife have a tiny back garden in the middle of a big city. We plant 4 or 5 tomato plants each year and a hill of zuccini and one of pole beans. The pole beans don't take up much room because they are planted in a little circle with three poles in the middle. Last year we had masses of beans and lots of fresh tomatoes but the squirrels and racoons destroyed most of the zuccini. Small gardens are a lot of fun, you should try and start with a few plants. Best of luck.

My parents have a huge garden and in the summer I'm lucky enough to get tomatoes, peppers, greens, cucumbers, and zucchini. Usually though I buy fruits and vegetables at the store. Food prices are definitely going up. I wish I had enough sunny land to have a nice garden of my own.

we own a farm in the place where i was born and raise, its a province and the main source of income of the people there are through farming, yes we plant all our vegetables there, we nurture them and sell the crops. its just too bad that we left my hometown and move into the city many miles from our old house. the farm is still okay anyway but we are not the one planting them now, we hire somebody to do the job.

doing a garden and growing your own vegies is a great way to save on extra expenses and it can be a stress relief being out in your garden and keeping it up to reap the benefits from it when you "harvest the fruits of your labor." an old proverb that is a great idea with the wild onions they grow every where and most of the time we just mow them over and dont even think about it as being something you can use in a soup or anything else. little ideas like these can add up to a good savings if more people had other ideas as well that you could put to use picking blackberries is a good way to make different snacks to Plant some fruit trees like apples or oranges or pears.

I would like to have an apple tree and grape vine, but don't want a pear tree. We had three pear trees when I was growing up and it wasn't a pleasant experience. But an apple or orange tree and grape vines would be great.

Hi, yes, we buy vegetables in the supermarket. I would love it if we can plant our own but that is not possible since we live in the city. On the contrary, on the province we have some plants, vegetables and even fruits there like "tomatoes, ampalaya, mangoes, cabbage" etc...

I normally buy mine from the store, I would just rather plant them instead.
