United States
April 27, 2008 4:28pm CST
Ok as everyone knows prices for things are going us fast and its starting to hurt many many people. So I wanted to start a discussion to see how many ways we can come up with to save money is these troubling times. I am gonna grow some fruits and veggies myself if it ever stops snowing here. So what are you gonna do to save or what ideas could you give all of us in the world of Mylot?

well lets see here i cut coupons like crazy lol. i buy what i only need. and shop around for bargins, the coupons sometimes work out best depending what supermarket you shop at. i also go to the farmers market to get veggies and fruits thats a good way to save a couple of pennys lol.

I have some tomatoes planted in a container and I'm gonna plant some peppers too. I told my hubby yesterday that I may just go ahead and plant a small garden at the end of the hill for the same reason you said. Groceries are outrageous. Every time I have planted a garden though we have a drought or a monsoon.

I'm with you, minnie, on growing fruits and veggies. Gonna grow a lil more this year so I can put them up for later use as well. I've already been driving less and utilizing my bicycle alot more if I'm just going to town for a few things or taking my daughter to karate/softball. It's only a couple miles to town and back which our daughter really enjoys doing with me. We rarely go out to eat as well. Can't even recall the last time we did go out. I'm cooking more on the grill than using the gas stove. Charcoal is cheaper than propane. Been using the wood-burning fireplace to heat our house as much as possible. It works great till gets down into the 30's, then I kick the furnace on but have thermostat set to 60. Buy in bulk when on sale and freeze in portions if it needs to be frozen. I could go on and on here and I'm sure your dad would be adding to this as well when he is feeling better.

I take a packed lunch to work. It might not sound much, but eating in the canteen costs a lot of money, I end up saving about £5 a week doing this. I also walk as much as I can, though it is difficult living where I am. I'd love to grow my own fruits and veggies too!

talking about saving!? my mom just somehow getting through some webpages and claimed a $100 walmart gift card and happily presenting to me. She was proud of what she made and sending out the link where she claimed: http://www.your-giftcards.com i have had a look on that and expected receiving tons of spam emails, as that cutie little fat lady used my company email for the registration (the one found in my namecard - thats what i been told) Thanks, mom, happy mother's day!

Yes, these are frightening times with gas and food going up so much and now the shortage of rice. As a retired person on a fixed income I am always looking out to save money. I walk wherever I can walk to. I make my meal plan when I am already in the supermarket in order to utilize the fruits and veggies that are on sale. I always reduce the amount of meat required in a recipe. I don't buy processed ready to eat meals. I simply cannot afford them. The smallest meal is at least $4.00 or $ 5.00 and for that money I can cook a lentil or bean soup or make a pot of chili that serves me four times. I also buy generic products instead of brand names. I wish I could grow a small garden but I live in a high rise and my balcony is facing north. My son and daughter in law have a small backyard and we are planning to increase the number of tomato and zuccini plants this year. He also has a few rasperry canes and a dozen strawberry plants. All summer long they get a few berries for their morning breakfast. Apart from that I always check out the Goodwill store if I need household goods before I buy new ones. Hope you get lots of suggestions.

I reduce the meat in recipes also to save money and make the meat go further. I will buy the cheapest even if it is genaric. I got a family of four to feed and one on the way so we gotta go cheap.

I have a penny bottle in the house that takes all the spare change at the end of the day. I try to use coupons and money off offers in the supermarket and, where possible, buy in bulk too. My partner and I plan to grow a lot of our own vegetables and salad stuff this summer, any means of saving money right now would be good.

As you are about to have a baby I will tell you few things that can help out. If you want to decorate the room for the new baby you can get contact paper (the one that you wrap books with that has pictures on one side and sticks on the other) you can cut the pictures and make borders (it would have costed me about $70 to do my son's room with border I did it for $2) they are easy to stick and easy to come off when you need to take them off. They dont live mess behind and if you choose to do it you can change them every day lol. And you can have almost anything you want on the walls. Plus you can cover the furniture with it frames or whatever so you can make a theme. The other thing I somethimes did (when I was short on money or cold not go to the shops) I would get paper towels for the kitchen use some soapy water and use them instead of baby wipes. I used to put few in a plastic box that I had from baby wipes and take them with me when we went out.

Plant some veggies. I am also looking for someone in the area to partner with. I am not much of a gardner but i can buy plants, seed ect.. I am buying my eggs locally from a small farmer, will also be hopefully buying veggies from them and maybe a fryer or two. We are extremely fortunate that my husbands job includes half a beef a year. In a month or so meat will not be an issue. Also cutting back on driving, may get a bike but we live in the country so no real way to use that as transportation.

Hi, I've invested in a power strip called smart strip. I plug my computer and other electic items into it and it stops the flow of electricity to the items when not in use. It's better than plugging and unplugging the appliances. Other than that I'm staring to dry my clothes outside instead of the dryer and just trying in general to use less of everything. I would love to grow fruits and veggies but I don't have a green thumb and I live in So. Fla where it can get pretty brutal. Let me know if you have any other ideas!

i start to save electricity and water in daily life.basically,i left the light on at night when watching tv in the bed.but now,i turn it down to save electricity and it's also ok to watch tv. what's more,i consume fewer stuffs such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste every time i use it. i'd like to get a good habit of saving.

Well, Minnie, I have been having some of the same concerns. I have started reading a book on budgeting that I think is going to help my family out a bunch. It is called "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. You can find out some great information just by going to his site www.daveramsey.com I hope this helps.

It also helps to pay bills online or over the phone no spending money on stamps and envelopes. I wish I could pay my rent online that would be so much easier.

I am making more meals by hand and using the leftovers in other meals. I'm buying less meat and using the meat in other dishes like soup and stew. We are combining items into one trip to save on gasoline. I use coupons to lower my grocery bill.

Hi Minnie, Yes you are right about the prices going through the roof. I have also started a garden. I car pool to and from work. When we go shopping, we have a list made up of not only what we are going to get. We also know where we are giong, and what we are going to get at each place. We always check the sale sheet for what's on sale and where.I know I am not doing anything differnt than anyone else. But I wanted to comment on this thought.

the only way is to talk with the government to provide direct facilities from the source person i.e.,not selling man(retailer) but the wholseller and to provide consetion to him like no transport charges ,no tax.etc.this is the only way i think so and if we start to save money personally it is our foolishness.then what is the use of govrnment?
