Hi everyone, I have a rather strange problem. My cat has been trained to use the litterbox her whole life. She has never had a problem before. Now all of a sudden over the last few months she is doing everything rig in front of the litterbox!!! I am wondering if it has to do with her age (she is 18 now) Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? Cheers,

could be her age-she may be having a problem getting in the catbox.one of mine when he became old had a problem lifting his leg over the side to get in,so he just gave up. i improvised a cat box from a tupperware storage box lid that was much lower, and he used that.

well, it could be a few things. It could be her age, does she have vision problems with other things, is she having a hard time moving around, climbing on things (arthritis). Or have you changed litter brands, she may not like the new litter. Do you have anythingnew in your house she may be recting to like a new animal, or child. I had this problem with an older cat as well and she was half blind and had arthritis really bad. And then I have had younger cats do the same as a sign of attention. In fact I had one if I did not daily clean the litter she would do this and even throw the litter out of the box on the floor to make me clean her box. They are very independent and anwry creatures. Good luck.

Usually a change in literbox usage is a sign of a problem. Have the cat checked by the vet to see if there are issues with her kidney function or perhaps even an infection.

It could be something like a kidney infection, kidney stones or that the cat doesn't like the litter you're using. Also, like the other person said, it could be difficult for the cat to get into the litter box. You might want to cut a lower spot in the box so that it is easier for the cat to get into the box.

Hi I'm sorry about your cat not using the litterbox. I's suggest getting a lower litter box, or one with a cover as well. Or even try haveing two litter boxes. I had a cat about 2 years ago that would refuse to use an open litter box. it had to be one with a lid...i guess he wantedthe privacy. THEN he would only pee in the litterbox until he pooped in there. After that he would go pee in a corner. My solution for that was to get a second litter box then he was using the litterbox instead.
