Hi everyone, I often have people ask me whether or not recess should exist at all in elementary school. I will often explain that it is a good opportunity for the kids to go out and form social skills, keep active and healthy and have some fun. Many people however are against it. What do you think? Should there be recess in school?

I definatly think there should be here in the UK children at schools have 2 breaks they last for about 15 mins each and they then have their lunch break. An adult would not be happy being cooped up for 6 and half hours without getting a little fresh air and the children need a break! after coming back from a break they are more ready to study in my oppinion, i mean we as adults are advised to take regular breaks between study or work so why shouldnt children?

Very true... if adults get breaks why would anyone think kids should not have one. Does not really make sense. cheers,

Of course it is lessons are for learning but school should also be a place to make friends and happy memories they cant do that if they are always stuck in a class room. They need breaks so they are ready to go back and continue learning.

It is the break which enables them to get back to learning that many people forget about. Good point :) cheers,

Yhea there must be have a recess because it is the time the children will have to socialites to other classmates, there have time to chat, play and bonds with other children. Without a recess the child might get easily tired and can get easily satiety in schooling and have the tendency not to go to the school anymore because they are bored.

Yeah I think there should be recess in school. Because for one thing kids nead a break time and its hard for a lot of kids to go through out the day to go without eatting. Plus they need something to look forward something other then going home through out the day. Plus it helps them get reengergized since a lot of people dont eat brekfest during the day.

Recess, or any time where the kids can have "free play", is a great time for kids to expand their creativity, develop social skills, and get some exercise. It also allows their little minds to take a break and refresh, something adults need, so why wouldn't kids need it? I do think recess should be well supervised and the kids should be in a safe area, but it should not be a structured time either and with all things, it is good to keep it in moderation.

Yes there should be because kids develop social skills at a young age, if they don't develop them at a young age they could have problems as they get older.

Many people overlook that point about recess being a time children develop their social skills. It is so important for them. cheers,

I think there should be recess. I agree they need the opportunity to socialize, and they need a break from class, get some exercise, and fresh air. My kids school only has recess one time for only 20 minutes. When I was in school we had some time after lunch, before we went back to class, and then later on we had another break. At my kids school, they eat lunch and then go back to class.

Unfortunatly in today's society, so many people are concerned with childhood obesity. Too many children go home and are babysat by the television and video games instead of being allowed to play outside and be active. If nothing else, these particular children are at least getting excersize during recess and phys. ed. in school. My children are quite active, in school and at home, but I still believe a certain amount of recess is good for them. They are just children, and can't really be expected to have their nose to the books for eight hours straight. Having a bit of time, like half an hour, to relax, goof off, and be themselves is beneficial to the learning process. This way they are able to relieve their stress and tension, and once they begin their studies again they may have more attention and focus to do so. Without recess I think they would just burn out and give up before the day is through.
