Caution! If You Don't Want Discussions Deleted DON'T Do This!

I only now have had the chance to get here...I was busy all day, and then also did cleaning in my place. So I went to my emails and have a ton of email notices from my friends. I was a bit alarmed though by one friend who hasn't been here in awhile and started a ton of discussions and I read some of them, not all. Red flags shot at me, since this person, while the discussions really ARE good ones, are copy/pastes of news articles from websites. This person may not realize that her discussions are doomed to be no doubt deleted...why? Naturally I'm hoping they're not YES...it is okay to share news articles with fellow MyLotters...but it's not okay to do a copy/paste without at least giving a link to the original source of the information. I myself will often give an excerpt of a news article I want to share with people...but I make darn sure I give a link to the original source So fair warning..if you want to share a news item that you think others would like to hear about...please give the link or credit to the original source...if you don't, don't be surprised if you're discussions are deleted--yikes there have been enough deletions around here lately. Also a question...I never noticed anything mentioned in the guidelines but is there a limit of how many discussions one can post in one day? I know there is a limit of how many photos one can post on discussions..think it's twenty-five?? But is there a limit to the number of discussions as well per day? So...if you post discussions based on an article or some other thing on a website...do you remember to give credit or the link of the original source?

As far as I know there are not limits on how many discussions we can post in a day. I always credit my sources when I share news stories, I figure the reader should have the option of reading the entire article. But it's good that you pointed out that it is in the rules too, save some people from making an honest oversight & having their discussion deleted.

I think a lot of people don't read the guidelines...I re-read them every once in awhile just to make sure I didn't miss or forget something

I don't ever post or copy and paste any stories at all. And I don't think there is a limit to how many discussions can be done. I say that because several mylotters as you know, do dozens a day. Do you think there should be a limit?

One of the people on my friend list posted the same discussion three times. The first time it was deleted, so she reposted it. The second time it was deleted, and she reposted it. The third time she posted it again. I have no idea if it has been deleted. But they were word for word the same thing. I think she must have really wanted that discussion!

Well the reason I ask if there is a limit is that I've heard people complain that their discussions are deleted and these are the people who post more than ten discussions a day, so I was wondering if there was a limit that we don't know about...doesn't say anything though in the guidelines

LOL--you know there are times I forget to provide the link, before I hit that post comment...this is when I wish there was an edit button so then I could add it...When I forget it, I add the link to the first responder's reply

Hi pyewacket! Thanks for the information/warning so if ever i am going to use an article, I will make sure that I am going to put the link of the original source. I do agree that there have been a lot of deletions lately and I did suffer the same fate but for another reason. It was my fault though. Just my thoughts dear friend. Take care and have a nice day!

Probably a lot of the deletions have been due to people just doing copy/paste of articles--yup it's important to add the link for any news source article

Oh, this is a good warning. I really appreciate it. Honestly, I have not read the guidelines so I don't have any idea of the rules here. Though I have not done anything like that yet, I mean copying news articles, and I don't have any idea if any of my discussions have been deleted yet, it's good to know this tip. I only make simple topics here and I mostly respond to other people's discussion. But knowing this, I guess I have to keep it in mind in case I do find a nice news article that is worth sharing with mylotters.

Actually a lot of the news features I start discussions on usually are news items I heard on the TV--then I try to find the corresponding article on the web...I always make sure I provide the link of the source of info

I will definitely keep that in mind if I ever start a discussion on something of that nature. As for a limit on the number of discussions you can start per day, I don't think there is one. I could be wrong, of course, but I haven't seen anywhere that there is.

I would think there actually would be some kind of limit though for the number of discussions one can do per day

Thanks for the tip. I think a discussion I responded to, today, got deleted. It was basically about some news that I personally witnessed and wanted to tell my point of view. But, it got deleted. That's OK, because it was bad stuff about the university I used to attend and I would rather it not be spread around the net, anyway.

Come to think about it, I don't know how this person was able to copy and paste that whole article as they didn't have over 500 next to their name.

That's really odd then if the person could copy/paste and they didn't have over 500 points

There is a way, and anyone that is doing it would be violating the guidelines and will be banned if they get reported.

Thank you for the information. I did not know this [though I know that plagiarism of any kind is wrong] I was not aware that copy pasting [even small paragraphs without proper citation ]in this forum would effect in a deletion of a discussion. This is the best feature of this site. Theere are always people forthcoming with tips and guidelinese . Have a nice day!

I always make sure I provide the links of articles I'm citing...I usually never copy the entire thing as most articles can be too long anyway and I like to add a commentary about it in my own words

Far as I know, there is no limit on how many discussions you can start. I always put in the link to where I got s story or info from in my posts. If not, then I make darn sure the creator of it is included. I know the mylot guidelines. I tend to go over them real quick bout once a month in case there are any new ones that I don't know about. lol

Well, even if you copy/paste and don't give reference to the said article then I think you are not doing fair to the person who wrote it. I believe that you must mention the name of the person at least.

I think most people feel that if they see it on a website it's free for the taking without giving credit..all I know I sure wouldn't like people copy/pasting one of my stories and not giving me credit..can we say lawsuit? LOL

Copying a news or article from a certain website is really prohibited. It is plagiarism and is a violation of the intellectual property rights. Anyway, I haven't posted any big news here. If ever I post discussions about issues, I really use my own words. Thank you for sharing this story.

As long as one provides the link to the origins of the article then it's all right, it's when people don't and palm it off as their own work then that is a clear act of plagiarism

I have only used the link deal one time, but then again I am not a big discussion starter. If I ever do use news stories I will be sure to do that. The link I used was to show case a mothers day tune I found cute on another social site I belong to. Slowly I am getting the hang of things here, so thanks for the info. It is good to know!

LOL..yes it does take awhile to get used to things here. As far as having links to articles, I remember if there was an article I wanted to share, and this was before I reached the 500 post mark couldn't copy/paste the link...what a pain it was to type it out manually...yeesh

Pyewacket - thanks for the message. I must admit that I have only done one or two news articles and yes, I had added the link. This was before I could cut and paste too! Lots of typing so I didn't do it often!! Interesting about the photos, I didn't know that. Do you know if this number (25?) is the total number of pictures that you can add in all your discussions altogether or is that the total number of pictures for one particular discussion? Thanks for sharing this info with us.

Back in my "early" days I didn't do too many discussions that involved article info---let's face it, it was a pain in the assets to type it out...and links were murder to type out correctly...I always managed to get them wrong..LOL

Thanks for the warning- Although I don't start new discussions anymore- I do see a lot of these types of discussions started. I don't respond to them- If I want to read the news- I go to msnbc- there are some people that do alot of copy/pasting of news articles. I just delete those e-mail notifications. I do enjoy some news articles---- when the person posting it also adds what they are thinking- but to just copy/paste- I think it's a waste of time.

Well there is another person here who is doing copy/pasting of article items and doesn't give a link...we have pointed out to him that he is in violation of the guidelines and he's defending himself that news items are "free" to use without given credit after 24 hours...well maybe that's true..but for here at MyLot one has to give credit or links to the source

Thank you for posting this. Its also not okay to copy and paste someone else's discussions either from here to another website or from another website to here. I too wonder about the number of discussions - I'm answering this directly from E-mail which doesn't give me a chance to read other responses yet. I'm definitely curious. I try to give credit, unless I can't remember where I read it.

For me, mylotters have used my discussions - word for word - in other forums. Just awful. What did their parents teach them?

Hello there. Thanks for this great discussion and for explaining in details. I have seen lots of copy and paste articles as well here, without a link whatsoever. I too think that it's not fair and that there are indeed users who create lots of discussions per day without so much work, because they just make use of the copy and paste function from other sites. That is certainly not healthy and I don't support such behavior. Have a good day there.

Yes and it's not really fair to the rest of us who post discussions with legitimate subjects...it's all too easy just to copy/paste...if I do have a discussion and copy some of the article I make sure I provide the source to give credit where credit is due

I can't link yet, you have to have 500 posts =P Anyway, isn't full c&p off another site a violation almost anywhere? It's even a violation to c&p somebody else's blog or post from another site without their knowledge - unless they have a disclaimer which states they don't care. I don't know about a discussion number limit, I never saw anything related to that during my initial browsing. I haven't read through the whole help section as I decided just to dive in and enjoy. When I have posted anything that wasn't something I came up with myself, I do include a link in case people want to read it or research further.

Well as far as the guidelines here I do know that as long as you give the link to the original source of an article source that one has a discussion about, it's not a violation.
