Remember Spam?

I was just listening to an old radio play with an ad for Spam on it. "Cold or hot, Spam hits the spot!" I remember eating spam as a child, before everyone got so manic about fat and calories, but we were so much more active then than we are now and those kinds of foods didn't adversely affect us. Do you still eat spam? I was delighted when they came out with a low-cal, low-fat version although it didn't taste quite the same. But I can't imagine eating it cold--eeewwwww!!

I thought I was the only one that still liked this stuff. I usually pick up a can every couple of months. I like the taste of it, but it isn't something I can eat all the time.

I bought some of the low-fat stuff and it was actually pretty tasty. Of course, it didn't fry up as crispy as the old stuff but a little cooking spray helped. I remember eating fried spam with tomato soup, or with toasted cheese sandwiches. Yum!

Unfortunately, I remember Spam. We ate quite a bit of it when I was a child. Just thinking about it gives me hot/cold chills. My mom could come up with the craziest things to do with it....... sliced thin with a slice of tomato and mayo on a sandwich, she would slice it up and fry it like bacon, cut it up into chunks and cook it in with scrambled eggs.... oh this list goes on. Yes, we ate it cold too. Eeeeeewwwww, I must stop now before I throw up a little bit in my thoat.

You are so right, dragon. That is exactly why my mom used it so much. She had six mouths to feed. It was a great way to stretch a meal for a small price.

LOL!! Well you know, it's always been cheap--except for the past few years. Families have depended on it to stretch their food budget for decades! I know a guy who loves it, I don't understand it. He even buys tshirts and hats and stuff with the logo on it!

I like spam. I've found you can do quite a bit with it and still make it taste good and it goes a really long way. I haven't had any in a really long time, but now I think I want some. Fry it up and make a really nice sandwhich with it.

My kids and I always liked it really crispy with a side of peas. Yummy!! It tastes great if cooked nice and crispy, but when you think of what it's made of, it's so disgusting! I'd just rather not think! It's really good fried crispy on an eggbread roll!

I have never tried Spam myself. It just looks so disgusting. When I was younger I bought some because I wanted to try it, but when I couldn't figure out what it was made of and I smelled it, I ended up rethinking that choice!

If you knew what it was made of, you'd be glad you never tried it! You know all the ham and stuff you see in the store? Ever wonder what happens to the rest of the animal parts? SPAM!! Yech..don't know how I ever ate it or fed it to my kids but there ya go..it used to be cheap so my family ate it. Rent was $65 a month, Dad made about $150 a month (this was the 50's and 60's) and there were four of us kids, we needed Spam! I'm working on eliminating most of the meat from my diet. It's disgusting. In my kitchen, and in every kitchen I've ever had for some reason, is the photo of a pet we had on Grandpa's farm called Rolly. Rolly was a beautiful Hereford Steer and because Grandpa bred such exquisite lines of cattle, Rolly always looked the same. But every couple of years, unknown to us, we got a new Rolly because the old one was sold to the butcher. How sad when we finally found out.

What a sad story! Funny that we have to shield children from knowing where their food comes from. Seems silly to me. Honesty is the best policy! I think it's great that you are thinking about cutting meat from your diet (duh, of course I do! haha) If you ever want to talk about it or have any questions or anything you can always ask me!! I just love to talk about vegetarian/veganism
