How do you handle an obnoxious co-worker?

Our company has a new employee, that is just totally annoying. He is loud, rude, and won't stop talking. He brags about everything, meddles in everybody's business, and acts arrogant towards everybody. I rarely get involved with office intrigues, but even my own calm is ruffled by his behavior. I choose to ignore him, and only talk to him when I don't really have a choice. Do you have such kind of individual in your workplace? How do you deal with such a person? Please share your own horror story.

Hello wayz12. It is a challenge to work with a "difficult" person. He sounds like he's pretty unpleasant to be around. I suspect most of us have worked with someone who we found to be unpleasant, crude, rude, etc. I currently work with a great group, so I am lucky. In the past when I found myself in such a situation, I tended to relate with the person as little as possible and be quite professional when I had to deal deal with him/her. My exchanges tended to be short and to the point. Good luck with this challenge, wayz12. I know how difficult co-worker relationships can be. PearlGrace

well, for me it is simple... i just stay away from the person as much as i can and don't want to have anything to do with him/her... i have one as well in the past... and i just stay away from her... now she is no longer working with us as she is fired by my manager because of her mouth... she talks too much... serves her right... take care and have a nice day...

You should talk to your boss about this person, so that he/she is aware of the situation. I've had to deal with plenty of those idiots over the years and some bosses have been helpful and others haven't, but it never hurts to at least mention it. If no one says anything nothing will get done. I had to talk to my supervisor about a guy that was sexually harrassing me and it was hard, but it worked out to my advantage. It also work to the advantage of the other girls when they came forward, and he was eventually fired. So it does help to speak up sometimes, no matter how hard it might be. Good luck!!! If you do talk to your boss, let us know what happens!

Hmm...he hasn't done anything bad directly towards me, but plenty of people are already complaining. I'll think more about your suggestion. Thanks for sharing!

i will better distance myself from the person because i don't tolerate arrogant behaviours. i prefer to work and talk with other co-workers i know that they better mannared than him or her. Though, there might be other good things about this person just that he or she is too proud or arrogant for ones liking. distance will be my solution.

yes, i had ones.. actually im just a trainee in our institution and she's a regular employee. i know she have an authority over me cause im juts a trainee. what i did, was just ignore her and just listen to things that are important. i never really ask for her help because she'll make sure that i'll feel useless and that i don't know anything. people like those are really hard to take, but of course we still need to work for ourselves.

You are right! Unfortunately, we do not live in a vacuum, so we just have to apply our own self-discipline to avoid such irritating individuals. Thanks for sharing!

I work with this guy that is a pain. He dont know when to quit. I try to ignore him but that makes him worse. After a while I just yell at him and he finally gets the message. This last for a little while at least.

If i were in your place I will just ignore him. I'll put a headphone in my ear for me not to hear him, I will not talk to my supervisor, i will just let him/her notice what this obnoxious person doing. or better yet talk to him and tell him that he needs to limit his obnoxious acts because a lot of your office mates get anooyed.

I don't think I'll talk to him. He is arrogant enough to think that he can do wrong. Thanks for sharing!

Many years ago I worked in an office and had a similar situation. I chose to completely ignore the person concerned, and kept well away from him. However, a fellow worker found herself as his main target, so much so that she felt she had to leave the firm. On her last day with the company, this obnoxious creep got his comeuppance, although none of us knew about it until after she had gone. She brought in some lovely cakes for her leaving day, and she left a particularly tasy looking chocolate cake on his desk while we shared out the others. Unknown to the rest of us she had laced the chocolate cake with a laxative. LOL

I think every place has at least one person like that. Although I'm retired now I have worked with people like that before and handled it much the same as you are. I would also get real busy or have something I just had to get to if the person started talking to me and would go to another area and find something to do or in some cases make a phone call that just had to be done right then...or so I told them that....(innocent look):-)

Thankfully I no longer have to. I work from home. The pay is alot less, but it is peaceful. I once quit because of a co-worker.She was the girlfriend of the boss. They gave my job to her. It was unbearable. Anyone else,I tend to try not to pay attention to.

I had such a person working with who made myday' miserable to say the least. she was second in command and I grew to hate her so much that I do not even remember her name now. she changed everything around' and gave me so many extra tasks in my four hour part time job that I could not handle them. then she groused to my supervisor that I was too old and she wanted me fired. she worked on the supervisor until she did let me go as she put it,a great way to say you're fired. Emily said I hate doing this, this is the hardest thing I have 'ever done as you are a great employee, but I am going to 'have to let you go.youare almost eighty.lol age discrimination but how can you fight the county, i was working in a county branch of the tustin library. Then I found out later both the second in command and my supervisor were later fired. but by then I could not have come back had I wanted to as I had broken my shoulder and lost a lot of use of my left arm. but I did think what goes around comes around. they got what was coming to them, both of them.

For me the most obnoxious co worker is the one that is new or maybe not even new and they just constantly think they are a know it all . Or tell you what to do about everything when its not their job. I like to ignore these type of people just because it makes me feel better. I do my job and I dont listen to WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY I do what my BOSS SAYS!

I am happy to say that we have no one like that that I can think of at this time. I am sure that I have worked with some in the past, but none comes to mind at this time.

In the past i have worked with people like that and the only thing that i did was ignore them, unless they started on me then i would let them know that my business was MY business and if i needed their input i would have asked. This didn't make them any quieter nor did it stop meddling in others business but it usually did keep them out of my business!

Annoying co-worker wouldn't be laking in supply in business establishment simply because they are people and people could be annoying sometimes. Don't mind him that's he easiest and simpliest thing you can do.

I have the same problem, but not with a guy. This female is very loud, rude and does and says things to make you mad.She enjoys it when she succeeds in this task. We work for the public, at a utility department in a medium size town. She answers the phone and if the customer is upset, she doesn't try to help, she gives them a smart but remark to make then mad and forwards them to other people. But the icing on the cake is that our Superintendent hears her and does not say a thing to her. If I or the other girl in the office was to say something like that to a customer or another employee, we would get written up. I have worked their for 8 1/2 years as a full or time employee. She has been their for 4 2/3 years. But for some reason she can do what she want. How can you deal with that type. Sign Not a good day at work...EVER!!
