do you still "do" those letter+envelope+stamp in this internet age?

June 6, 2008 6:01am CST
i just noticed that my handwritting has become unrecognizable even to myself-too ugly to be read..:P so i tried to write the way i used to. i also noticed that the pen is heavier or harder. this again reminded me about the time (in the past) when i used to write letters to pen pals all over the world. i wonder how many people are still writting letters/real letters to pen pals. some might think it's a little embarassing but i think it's still fun to do.

Hi pixie, No, the lazy and the miser both conspire to keep me away from the card shop and even if I turned my house upside down, I would not find a decent writing pad on which to write a few lines! And then who bothers to walk down to the post office anymore…not me certianly. The more than the internet itself, I think the worst indulgence comes from the online free greeting cards with all their myriad embellishments. Not only can you write your personal message on them, you can also decorate them as you like (which is impossible) in actual cards. Regarding letters too, I am an absolute netoholic… But yes, I do agree that there’s a certain romance and expectation when the postman delivers a letter to you, especially if you are already waiting for it.

Maybe I’ll just preserve it and my grandkids will auction it off as the most illegible handwriting of the paper era!

For me, I don't find posting mails are embarrassing, but rather too troublesome. As I can get it done fast in emails. If that's a parcel, then it's different story then.

that's the limit of email - no real parcel. but too troublesome to get that stamp. pro and cons for both. thanks lieanat.

I know about the limitation, so I seldom send parcel to friends. Hehe... have a nice day.

I have this brother that refuses to use the internet and I either have to write him a letter or phone him. I would rather phone or visit him, because knowing me, I will probably write him and tell him to get out of his apartment and go someplace. I also have bad wrists, since I fell on my good hand (left one(and even before internet, my handwriting was not that good. It hurts too much if I write too long.

oh sorry about that suspenseful....maybe emailing is the better choice for you (apart from the phone) since writing is hurting... but writing once in a while is still a lot relieve if the hand is in the mood... have a nice day!

Yes, I have pen pals so I still write letters. Normally I hand write letters to my pen pals. I've been writing to my pen pals since 1998. I don't think it's embarrassing at all to write letters. I do write emails, too, but I love to write letters better. Have a wonderful day. Pablo

yeah Pablo - just like me, i still like writing letters even though they're ugly...but wonders of receiving back those replies is far greater than email replies (which a lot of times irritates me-especially spam)

Hi singlepixel! I still send cards with stamps in the post office once in awhile but I just sign my name on it. haha..I only write when I have to sign checks and do the grocery lists, other than that, I don't think I am using the traditional pen and ink activity. I used to have a beautiful penmanship but I could see now that my penmanship is kinda getting small and it seems that my hand is really getting stiff. I do think I have an ugly penmanship now. haha.. I do think writing letters to penpals is fun. haha.. Take care and God bless!

hi Faith, i'd like to do just that - 'just sign on those cards and send them', but the problem is- even my own signature is ugly now..ha ha ha.. thanks to technology, i dont have to write and sign anything SO THAT YOU WON'T RECOGNIZE MY UGLY HANDWRITING..

There is more to writing letters by hand, sticking up a stamp and sending than just considering it as an old method. There is more value in what you write if it is written by your own hand. If you write a mail from computer and send it via email, there is no proof that you wrote it, even though its from your own email address. Also there is nothing special about it because its not your handwriting, and nothing but some electron beams showing up on the monitor. I always send my girl friend hand written letters. And i have recognized that she likes it more when i write from hand than when i type it down and print. And she would say my handwriting is really nice even if it was worst than the day before.

As easy as it is to use a word processor, I still have to write an occasional letter. For my elderly friends I use large print and the processor. For thank yous I still write them by hand and mail them. It would be wrong to send a thank you any other way after a job interview. Believe it or not, people like to see our handwritting and they make judgements on it. I journal and that is done by pen. I can look at different times in my journal and see just how my actual mood was by my handwritting.

i agree with you 100%! it's more lively to feel the person by reading his/her handriting than by email. i can't really prove it but i just fell it that way.

I do not have pen pals. But I still like sending out cards which is more personal than a ecard. This does give a personal note. When I cant attend a wedding I will send out a greeting card with a hand written note to express my inability to attend.

very thoughtful. that's a very nice thing to do.

Yes, I still do write and send cards. I admit it is not as often as I used to but I still do it. My ex-mom in law is a great friend whom I don't see nearly enough. She doesn't have internet and we both hate phones so we do exchange letters a few times a year just to keep each other caught up. we live in different areas with different schedules so that is our communication. I also send cards occassionally to people that I don't see often just t o let them know I'm thinking of them. I love getting letters and I think most people do. It is a welcome surprise in amongst the bills. Just wish I had time to do it more frequently. It is a dying art.

Yes, I do. Especially Christmas Cards. It is not the same to send out e-mail greetings for the holidays. And getting a birthday card in the mail is so much more special than getting one sent via e-mail. :D

true. you can get to keep it too. - and sometimes, i smell them. it's just nostalgic.

There's only certain times of the year where I will do the letter, envelope and stamp thing. When it's someone's birthday I will send out a letter with the card, but that's only on occasion now. Around Christmas time I always have and think I always will do it. I find it's more personal and I love receiving mail from friends and family as well. Just a pleasent surprise. Have a good day

that's right, it has its own value by being able to hold the letter -as if the real person was really there.:)

Hmm,, I don't think it's embarrassing... I don't have penpals that I haven't really met. Wait, what do penpals really mean by the way? But I write to my Japanese friends most particularly my Host family who opened their house to me to be their family member for 3weeks...They do write back and send me gifts too. :) One time, I mailed a letter to them and with me is my friend, she jokingly teased me and said, "Hey, there's e-mail now..Why bother snail mailing?" What she didn't understand is the very pleasant feeling of sending and receiving handwritten letters. It's like it's telling you, "Hey, the sender put much effort and thinking for writing this letter" When I receive their letters, it's like they're telling me that they miss me...And receiving a letter is something very rare nowadays that when you get one, you feel very special. It's so touching that they find time to sit down and write letters to me (in English) which I appreciate much because they're not that fluent in english so it must have taken them time... i, too try to write to them in Japanese (but almost failed..haha but I try really hard) I actually want to find penpals...hihi,, as I really enjoy writing letters. Oh I still use email...but it's for really casual conversations really. When it comes to writing someone wherein I want that person to feel those emotions I want to convey.. I use letters :)
16 Jun 08
yes, you're very sweet towards your friends. i'm sure when they read your reply, they'll feel very appreciated for the effort you done. email may be the choice of many but it still can't replace the sentimental value of writting letters. thanks vianne!

hey single! so you used to have pen pals before?? what a coincidence. i did too. but i still do now. i still have pen pals whom i write to every now and then. and yeah, i still do the letter+envelope+stamp thing. i buy nice stationaries, sometimes i make my own. and i make my own envelope. ^__~ and then, i make my address labels. it would be nice if i can make my own stamps. but of course, that's impossible. i'm so used with writing as with typing here in the keyboard. i get to write a lot too in the office so i don't get new to it. i still can recognize my own penmanship although its not that pretty. but when i write in pretty stationaries, i try to make my penmanship look nicer as much as possible. ^__^

I don't remember the last time I wrote a pen and paper type letter. But, I just finished 6 years of college, which basically means 6 years of almost constant note taking, and only towards the end did I start occasionally taking my laptop to type notes instead of writing them. My handwriting tends to be a mixture of cursive and regular writing at times, but I can read it pretty good, unless I was rushing, and still, usually I wrote pretty decent.

I don't have any pen pals but I do still write letters and send cards. There is something altogether more personal about a letter. I love to send them and love even more to receive them. Of course E Mail is a huge advantage. But there is still room for the romance of the letter. I also use letters when writing to businesses. It seems to make them take more notice.

I still write to friends and family. I love to write with pen and paper. To be really honest, I get more tired typing than writing.
