Do you get the flu often and what do you do to take care of yourself when you do

Right now I feel miserable, the last couple of days I have had the flu, that is why i have not been so active here. Have runny nose, blocked ears and aching muscles. My whole house has had the run of this flu. I am lucky last, not, to get it, I seem to have got it the worst. I am glad my kids shook it off pretty quick. When I have the flu I just take a couple of panadols and rest lots and watch movies. However when my kids are sick I give them panadol, put on a humidifier and put vicks on their chest and give them lots of love. So what do you do when you or your family is sick, any magical things to make you feel better. Do you get sick often?

I don't get sick often, only my regular dysmenorrhea is my constant visitor.ANyway, when one is sick in the family, I will also attend to them and cook for hot soup, give plenty of water and some aspirin or any allergy tablet!

Neti Pot - Neti pot used to clear nasal passages
When I get sick I get sick. With such a great lack of sleep it really doesn't help me out too much. Mind you I have been lucky and have not gotten a cold in the last 2 years and dang lucky about that one as well. I would not be able to handle it with my back. For running nose get a vick inhaler and or neti pot and flush your nose right out. It will clear up in a day or two. With blocked ears I have found a few drops of peroxide in the ears let sit for about 30 seconds to a minute will help with the impact. It will fizz and feel weird. Remember to keep your head tilted when you are doing this. For aching muscles hot baths and lots of rest is really the only way it is going to ease them.

Wow 2 years without having a cold that is really lucky, you must have a good immune system. I have never tried peroxide in my ears before, might have to try that one not have I used a neti pot before, thanks for posting a picture of it. I do take lots of hot baths that really does help my aching muscles. Thanks for the great advice, I appreciate it.

Actually because of my back injury I have a really bad immune system. I take Vitamin C tablets. Getting a cold with a back injury hurts like h e double hockey sticks. It is not fun with the coughing. My dad always had problems with blockage of the ears the specialist says peroxide is the best thing for them for ear wax build up, impacted ears and blockages. I was a little iffy about using a neti pot as well. It takes a bit to get used to but let me tell ya it sure clears out those nasal passages.

I am not getting sick that often. I am trying to stay healthy as long as I can given that I look after myself. Every night I always sleep before 10pm and wake up at 6am so that I have more than enough rest before going to work. I know the work is always tiring and that's why I make sure not only taking enough rest but also to eat good food and as well as taking supplementaries to keep me up for the day. If I am sick I would call my workplace and say that I could not come as I am sick. I just stay at home and having a lot of rest and next day I'll be feeling much better.

Seems like rest is popular here when people are sick. Sleep definaely does help, that is one thing thought that I don't get enough of at the moment with 3 month old baby, 3 year old and 12 year old.

Awww. Nice to know that your kids are well, but too bad you're not. It's hard when kids get the flu. Anyway, I used to get the flu almost every other month or so. I know. I've keeping notes on it. Luckily, haven't had the flu since 2008 came in. But what I do when I have the flu is, I take in lots of liquids especially water and fruit juices (orange or pineapple), drink medicine, take a nap in the afternoon and try to move as much as I can. I think just lying around makes my muscles ache more. So I try going up and down the stairs and do stuff. Not extreme carrying heavy stuffs or anything. Just making sure that my body's moving is okay. Hope you get well soon!

Sorry you are not feeling well. I have had the flu two times in my life. Not a good experience. I had the flu this past Feb. It started with a sore throat, and then boom. I had no appetite, the over the counter medicines did not help, it actually just took it's course, was at least a month before I started feeling normal. Take care of yourself, and hope you can shake it off soon.

Wow only 2 times in your life, that is amazing. A month is along time to have the flu, that would have been awful for you. Hope mine goes away soon, finding it hard to get by day to day as I need my energy to look after bubs.

Sorry to hear about your family being sick. Luckily I have not had the flu in a long time. I usually get my flu shot to help ward it off too. When I have been sick though, I usually eat soup and get plenty of rest. That seems to help a lot.

Never had the flu shot myself, i should look into that, considering it would be easy for me to get the flu with my kids catching it from school and kindy all the time. I try to rest when I can, just hard as I also have my 3 month old and 3 year old to look after. Soup sounds like a great idea, thanks.

a lot of liquid can really help. hot soup and i always steam water and put vaporub on the water when it is boiling already. i tell my children to inhale the fumes and breathing will be easier. when you drink a lot of water you urinate more so the toxic inside your body will be washed away. take care

Oh so that is why you have been quiet, poor you and having the little ones to take care of too. I am sending all my positive getting well thoughts over to you on the wind and I hope that when they get to you they will make you better xx I do not get flu, or any colds really. I get the beginnings of them but they never come out in full as soon as I feel it start I take strong paracetomols and just tell it to get gone. I have no time to get ill, getting ill means early nights and no computer time for me! The kids when they are ill get calpol, which is a kids form of paracetomol and like you the vicks comes out. Great stuff that is ah? Better than any cough medicine. I swear by it.

Hello, yes that is why I have not been here much lately, just popping on occassionally.Still pretty sick, been a couple of days now, so over this flu. Want to be normal again, lol. It is so hard when you can't look after yourself as I have to take care of the kids, especially bubs. I will have to tell my flu to "get gone too" hope it works. Think mine is stubborn, lol. Vicks is great I agree. Hope to be back in full swing again soon, thanks for your help and concern. Take care.

I hope you will feel well soon. As for me, I don't always get flu or cold but this year, I got colds twice already... It must be the weather... It keeps on changing. When I am sick, I drink a lot of water, take some meds and put some ointment on my back or chest like Katinko or vicks as well. Thanks. Cheers!

I hardly ever get sick but if I happen to catch it which I just got over the stomach bug it really takes a beating on me and all I do is take my nyquil and pass out and sleep it off. Last Thursday afternoon I started feeling icky and said to myself "oh no I refuse to get like this I won't have it I can't" I went to bed early Thursday night and woke up Friday feeling the same and I knew I had to work that night and was thinking if I should go in or not. I ended up going into work but only stayed for 2 hrs. then got sent home for I felt like I was going to hurl every where I felt like a mac truck ran over me. I went home went back to bed and didn't go back to work til Sunday all I did was sleep for two days. I am feeling better now and hope it dosn't get a wack at me again any time soon in the near future for I hate it when I feel like this I'm so lifeless.

Sorry to hear you were so sick too, nothing worse then vomiting bugs, I can't handle them very well. I think sleep is the best thing. However I can't sleep in day as have my 3 kids who keep me awake and bubs needs me during day. I am glad you are feeling better now.

Believe it or not.....I do NOT get a flu vaccination and I have not had the flu for probably 10 years. I have not even had a cold this year. I don't know why. I don't do anything special other than wash my hands alot. I am not around very many people and my children are grown so I must not be exposed to very many viruses. I hope you start feel better soon.

Wow, 10 years that is amazing, whatever you are doing keep doing it. Washing your hands definately would help as that keeps the germs away. I have three kids and alot of the time they pick up the flu from school or kindy. Usually I don't get it, but this time it hit me big time.

Hubby rarely gets sick, don't ask my why. I get sick most of the winter and usually end up with pnemonia or bronchitis. Last year I had walking pnemonia, bronchitis and an upper respitory infection...on Christmas. When I'm sick I sleep almost constantly...I slather on vicks, bundle under about 10 quilts and comforter's and pass out. Hubby is usually left to fend for himself. I don't get the flu very often - it is hard for me to take care of myself though, because I have 6 kiddos who don't let me rest.
