I just saved myself $28

I gave the two boys their summer hair cuts instead of taking them some where to have it done. They both have really thick hair and have been just dripping with sweat the past few days. My car is still broke so I'm limited on how often I can go to town...s/o's truck is a gas guzzler so we try not to use it unless we have to and I did my grocery shopping with it last night.. So I popped them up on the kitchen stool and grabbed the scissors. It's not really all that hard to give a short, boy cut. The 3 year old squirmed alot but we managed. The 5 year old has a funny hairline in front and I think I should have left him a little bit of bangs but oh well, it's done now the loof fine and aren't sweating so much. So that's how I started my week, saving $12 on hair cuts and $16 on gas by not going to town again. Does anybody else do their own summer cuts? Who else got the week started with good money saving?

My wife and I bought a Con Air haircutting kit for about $10.00 a couple of years ago. She cuts my hair and my sons, we save so much money, plus when I want a haircut I don't have to go and wait somewhere to get it done. I ask and she's ready to trim me and the boy in minutes. Good for you mom, watch around the ears though, us boys tend to get a little nervous.

Even easier is buying a set of clippers with the combs. Then all you have to do is pop the comb on and shave it. All hairs will be perfectly even! No boo-boos and it will look like a professional cut. My hubby started doing this when he started 10 hour shifts at work. He didn't have time to make it to barber during week and that was one more thing to take up his Saturday "off" time. Good for you in tackling this! I'm sure you will only get better at it whether you continue with the scissors or try the clippers. Your boys will be accustomed to your cutting their hair and you won't have to ever worry about going to town for haircuts. You did good!!

I do think they are so much easier to use! I had one before and did my oldest boy's hair all the time. MIL was sure she had one so I started with the cutting...but then she couldn't find it so I had to do it all with scissors. I'm definitely putting a pair of clippers on my wish list though!

wow! That's cool foxyfire.. My husband asked me to cut his hair but I was scared to do it last Saturday, I have tried cutting hair once with my cousin when I was 15 years old and it was horrible..I never tried to do it again for my bad experience..So, he went to the place where he use to get his haircut, we didn't save but at least, he got the best service which I can't give..LOL!

I cut both my hair and my boyfriends. His is easy though, just a quick run-through with the clippers. mine is straight and not layered, so it's easy as well. It's a great money and time saver. Glad you got the boys hair cuts done, and saved a bit in the process.

I sure hope your boys' hair turned out better than mine and my sister's when my mom used to cut ours! Well at least they are boys...my issue was mainly that we looked like boys when she was done with us. lol We ended up with similar haircuts all through our childhood even after she gave up cutting it, come to think of it... Anyway, I wouldn't attempt to cut my own hair, or trust a non-professional to do it. I haven't had my hair cut since September, since I had to get it re-cut to fix what the first person did (darn Supercuts!). I need to get it cut soon, but I have a couple of coupons for haircuts from the Entertainment book (pays for itself very quickly) so I will try one of those places.

My grandson give him self a buzz cut every few weeks and I get to be sure it is nicely trimmed. He has really thick hair and if it gets any length to it the sweat just rolls off. I have to get mine cut at a parlor because I can't reach to cut and It only cost about $15.00s every 3 to 4 months.

That's how my boys are! The youngest two don't seem to be quite as bad as the older two but their's may have not filled in as much since they are younger. But the older two...if their hair gets a little long, it will stand right on end when it's sweaty, you can't even really run your fingers though it.

I get out the clippers for my boys. My 11 year old and my husband get buzzed over the Summer. During School I take my son to get his cut - you know how it is lol. My husband he gets the buzz all the time. As for my daughter its 8 dollars to get her bangs cut and the hair dressers. After 2 cuts I thought this is ridculas and started doing it myself. Thats all she gets done is her bangs so I do it myself. She is actually better with me then she was with the hairdresser. So it saves me money and aggervation.

That's great savings. I wish my hubby would continue to cut my son's hair but everytime he needs a haircut he is away overseas for work, so I end up taking him to the local barber. I don't drive so I use public transport and it only costs me $1.25 - I use my hubbys work metro card as he gets $100 dollars worth through work every month. Saves me alot because I use public transport.

Sometimes I really wish we had public transportation for that very reason, it would probably be so much cheaper.

This week we haven't spent much money or gone anywhere special, so that saved us about ten dollars in gas. While most people are griping about gas, we just stay home and that saves money!

My sister has always cut her kids's hair. I think she must have saved a fortune in haircuts by now because her oldest is almost 12. She has one of those home barbershop kits. I think their hair looks Ok. It might be styled more in a shop, but you dont look at them and say look at that freaking looking kid, their mom must have cut their hair. I would recommend home cutting if possible.

LOL...I definitely do need to get a set of clippers! MIL was sure she had a pair so I started cutting the extra hair with scissors. She couldn't find her clippers afterall and I couldn't just stop in the middle and wait until we could get a pair! It really did turn out fine, it just took longer.

I am always looking for ways to save money so yes I do all of our families hair cuts. My boys are easy and I just hit them with the clippers. Our daughters tale a little more work but I have gotten pretty good, except the 4 year old that won't sit still when I do her bangs.

LOL...don't you know that 4 year old girls are supposed to have crooked bangs?! It's the new fad, honest...at least that's what you can tell everyone

I cut my kids' hair; they both have straight hair and like simple cuts so it's easy to do and it definitely saves money.

I bought one of those electric clippers and other then for the first day of middle school, I cut my son's hair from the time he was 7 until he hit high school at 15. It was the only way I could afford haircuts. My hair grew way down past my waist.

I did it three years ago. I also cut the hair of my two boys to save on haircut. Unfortunately the first try I did a very bad job and I have to bring one of the boys to a barber to have his haircut fixed. I am still doing a bad job doing hair cut up to now but I have stopped doing it to the boys. We found a much cheaper barber shop and we still saved some money. I think I need a professional to do a good job. It's seem so simple enough looking at the video that come with haircut kits, but it's a totally different doing it actually. You need to have skills if you want to be a barber and some have a gift for it. They don't need professional training to be good at it. A $28 savings can be use to buy other things. Good job for doing something new.

I have been cutting the boys hair every since they were born. Now they are 9 and 7 (next week). Talk about savings! I also added up the savings for a while. I also do trims for my daughter and I have been cutting my own hair for two years now. But recently we went to the hair dresser to cut her hair to donate to angel hair for kids (13 inches). It cost me 16 plus a tip and about 8 on gas. Though it was a fun day afterward my daughter said she thinks I could have done a better job and you know what I think she is right. LOL I also have been doing my partners hair for the last few years. When I first started to cut the boys hair he used to get mad and say he would take them to a barber but now he asks me to do his too. HEHE

I haven't saved yet but I am about to as I was considering popping my four year old son down to the barbers for a haircut as his is getting thick and it is hot here too but I have trimmers in the cupboard so it looks like a grade four cut for him today LOL and a saving of £6 at barbers and £2 in parking and diesel. Thanks for the idea. Ellie :D

we always cut our kids' hair at home, what a waste of time and money to take them to the hairdressers, and they are bound to hate it and kick up a fuss! well done you!
