Does being happy make you healthier?

Recent studies have found that happy people have a better attitude toward life and live longer. One study showed that happiness improved bodily functions that helped decrease the effects of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Studies show that happy people live an average of 7 years longer than others. Being happier involves training your brain. No matter how difficult a situation you're facing you can train yourself to face it, get through it, and get on with your life instead of dreading, lamenting, getting angry about it. How do you handle situations that make you unhappy? Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

I would like to believe so. That's why I make sure that I let every single day in my life pass by that I have something to smile about. That's what my father likes to tell me, too. Life is too short to live on regrets and anything that is unhappy. Wallowing on them won't make life any easier to live with. I like to believe that I'm an optimist. Always have been when I was a child through my adulthood. But when I got married and had a child, I realized that life is much more complicated to handle. That was the point when I was faced with difficult challenges and problems. But as what you've said, facing a hard situation head-on and trying the very best to get through it, or at least around it, is a much better option. I know as long as I'm breathing, I'll be facing more problems ahead. But as I've said, I'm an optimist. And trying to stay happy despite the problems is much more challenging. And I like challenges.

i think it's a psychological effect of things. when you have a more positive outlook in life than your peers you appear more radiant even under great stress. people like that have a way of handling pressure gracefully. they also accept things in life without question coz they're wise enough to know that it's part of their existence and without it life is no life at all. i've been through enough to know that life is no fairy tale. i have to say i'm a realist. becoming angry and grouchy is human nature. others have mastered the art of being calm under stressful situations while others have not. it's just a matter of learning how to get hold of your emotions and letting go of them at the right time... all i can say is that despite the negtive things that keep on striking us, life is still beautiful and worth living...so, strive to stay happy...good luck!

I know someone who is complaining every day about his job, his life, his future, his past and his health. There is always something giving him problems with his health. He does not even try to eat healthy food or to drink enough water, to sleep well or to take exercise, so it is no surprise he always has a cold, a bad back, bad skin or unexplained pains. I make an effort to have a positive outlook. I try to eat healthy food, take regular exercise and I never complain, even when things look bad for me, I try to find a solution rather than complain about how bad it is. I never have any problems with my health.

I know people like your acquaintance too. Sometimes I sympathize with them, but after a while I just have to be free of them because they start to drag me down too. That sounds harsh, but if they aren't willing to do anything to better their situation, then they can't expect me to make it all better.

I've heard this. I've heard a lot of stories about people with cancer and diseases and how when you are an optimist and not a pessimist, you are more likely to fully recover from those diseases. When you have a bad attitude you put your body under emmense stress which causes a lot of stress on all your organs, etc. Your mind is a powerful part of the body. If you believe you are going to be healed and are happy everyday and stay positive, your body has a much better chance to recover...at least that is what I believe.

Yes, you're right, and even if you don't recover (and lets face it, some don't) you at least LIVE your life and are a productive person while you're here.

As the saying goes "laughter is the best medicine". I have a very happy surroundings which made me a happy person despite the problems I encounter. We cannot avoid certain problems but you don't have to be angry or depressed for a long time because it is not good for us. When I'm in that situation, I often go to the people who can make me happy just to avoid the unhappy situation even for a while.

Good strategy. By thinking about something else for a while sometimes you reduce the severity of your perseption of the bad situation.

Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory. Albert Schweitzer I think that you are right. We can train our brain to be happy. It is mostly about our interpretation of outer wold.

I'm not sure that happiness itself increase the life span or make you healthier, but I know that sadness can make many health problems, so in away or another yes, smile and be happy you won't loos your health.

I have also read that laughter is the best medicine and that if you laugh heartily you will, be virtually free from disease. That is the power of humour.I can well understand it because when we are able to see the humour in a situation , we do not t ake things so much to heart. But when it comes to troubles that really bother us constantly, your question is a very valid one and this handling of such situations call for a lot of disciplined training of the mind especially for people who tend to brood and think of the past. It is quite difficult. I for one. am aware of it because I used to fret over 'the might have been's in a particular loss of relationship. Now, I am more detached about it. So, the solution to the problem is to view the situation without emotional attachment and expectation from any person. This is only for tiffs, squabbles, loss of relationships etc.., Being an optimist and having firm faith in God would help us a great deal, [I BELIEVE IN THIS].

I think i am more optimistic than not. Most of the time. After all getting angry just gives you a headache and that certainly does not help a thing.

It is not about how long you live, it is about the quality of life you have while you live.
