Filipinos and the Philippines

June 24, 2008 9:14pm CST
I could not disagree with the Korean student who wrote about the Philippines in an essay as shared with us by Kaezy_kulet. So many of us Filipinos have given up our hopes on our country. Following the trend of this thought, let's take, as a nugget of wisdom, the highlight of the inaugural address in 1961 of the late U.S. President,John F. Kennedy, as a guiding principle of us Filipinos, being a patriot: "ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY." At present as we Filipinos know, the Philippines faces tons of problems - poverty, brain drain, economic crunch, corruption, national leadership, and the listing could be endless. But somehow in our own small ways, we can be of help to contribute for alleviating the struggles of our country. Perhaps we could share our thoughts as to how and what can be done for our country.

I used to be so naive with politics...never cared...but now, i think even the most caloused filipino would be able to give a thought or two for the problems we have as they can really be very upsetting. I guess one thing we as Filipinos can do is to refuse from being defeated by these pressing problems. We should really make the effort to get our minds heard. There are lots of sites and blogs/forums where we can freely express our thought. Maybe through these small acts we can get our voices heard. So, thanks for starting this discussion. The responses are really very interesting.

The government of the day is to blame for any shortfall and grouses of the citizen of that country. I was in Manila last month and I see your huge shopping malls and other developments. This in reality doesn't speak well of the economic wellbeing of the people there.

Hey Zandi!!! Thanks for visiting us! Hope you had a pleasant stay in Manila. Where are you from? The huge shopping malls and other developments might not speak well of the economic wellbeing of the Filipino people, but looking at the perspective of businessmen, both local and foreign, Philippines is still being considered as a good place to live in and has wealth opportunities to offer. Unfortunately, a larger percentage of Filipinos cannot participate in taking on the opportunities for the simply reason of capitalization. Thus, mostly have opted to be salaried employees. However, should chance, luck and confidence be given, our talent can not be easily ignored. As for those huge shopping malls? I think most would agree with me in saying that they serve as our venues for breather amidst the stone jungle of Metro Manila. Keep in touch Zandi!

being in the government service, i know i did served the people and the country, to the best that i can. i am a simple rank and file, support staff, as they call the people at the first level. just to keep the in mind the oath that i took when i assume the post and keep it in heart, i know that i did what the country and the people should be expecting from me, as a civil servant...

What agency are you working with? I also worked for the government before but I recently opted to become a private citizen. I should congratulate you for being so true to the oath. Hope there are still many civil workers who are like you!

I think the problems are not about the country. It s not only the people of the government but all of us.If we will learn how to save our country or if all filipino has love to their country i think the problem will solve.each individual has to walk hand in hand for the love of the country.set aside the politics and learn how to cope up with those problems.Filipinos Cheer Up.Please love your country.

I truly agree with that quote from JFK. In fact, i may add the quote: Let us not ask how valuable we are but how we can be valuable. I find it truly lame to keep insisting that a government serve it's people. To quote a statesman who's name i forgot: Citizens are always ashamed of their own government. This simply shows human nature at play wherein it is impossible to please everybody. I'd rather, that citizens find ways to move their country forward instead on just relying on the government for progress. Actions speak louder than words, and most of those who complain about the country's backwardness do nothing for the greater good, or are merely useless.

good day.. As it is shameful to discuss the flaws of our government and the corruptions of our officials from top to bottom in the midst of other nations and other nationals sadly it's the truth. Our problems are deep rooted, I don't know what's in us that we need to step on each other just to rise up? We want so much the admiration and respect of other nations and yet didn't even wanted to earn the respect from our own. Crab mentality is really a suited description. This trait was already observed by our national hero Rizal in his novel Noli Me Tangere, where a Filipina married to a Spaniard maltreated Sisa ( a mentally challenged mother ) just to project her anger of her husband. As of this generation why with other countries they have only one name for the house help. either a maid or house assistant nothing demeaning whereas here we've got other names such as chimay, atsay, chiminiaa among others and yet who are we demeaning? our own sisters, Filipinas why because they're uneducated and poor? That's how low we think of our blood, that we wanted to become other nationals than to become a true Filipino. Unfortunately these traits are mostly found in our corrupt officials mixed with greed and power hunger. We need drastic change NOW for the country can not wait any longer. We're sunk the lowest and we keep on seeking deeper, every other asian nations know this except us or we seem fit to deny it. Enough of the saying what the country can do etc. etc. We know that but we simply don't care. Just as simple word would suffice. Change and change Now before it's too late.

special mention huh?! hehehe for me what we can do is change in our own little way first..there is someone(sorry i forgot who it is)who had posted here that if we want a change start it within ourselves..it is true. How can we ask for a change if we don't know how to change? very simple right? Let us be an example to others if we can do it on ourselves then why can't others change too..do we need to wait until we are really helpless and down before we act? do we need to wait for a change in our gov't? useless waiting i might say act for yourself and let others treat you as their example.

Well it's really difficult to support our government right now when we all know that they are pocketing our tax money. As much as I want to think that the Arroyo administration only has our best interests at heart, I cannot. We can only do so much when our leaders are pathetic right? WHich is why a lot of people prefer to live in the province where the main government cannot meddle with their affairs.

Thanks also for sharing your thoughts Mimico

I guess the problem of our country is selfishness. Or being concerned of the seft interest first before the interest of others. I think we are not following the saying "ask not what your country..." as you have said. Only a few nowadays have that in mind. Like if we are in a sinking boat, most of us would think of our own safety and do anything to survive. Only a few would think about saving others. I guess the change should start on everyone, and the other may follow suit. The problem why only a few has started this change because there are lot out there who takes advantage of their kindness.

We start with our own homes, I believe we Filipinos are rich in values, the value that we should keep and nourish as the home is the starting point by which we and our kids could impart to others as they get along in the society, one of these values are respecting our elders - the "mano po", the value of helping our family members, -clannish (which sometimes has a bad inclination to some but basically, its intent is very positive), the prayer before meals and the like, parents teach their kids how to dispose wastes properly it is one way, whereby our children including ourselves to live a healthy environment, values like honesty, love, and many others should be practiced and taught in the homes. If properly carried through our offsprings we produce good citizens, in this way, we make a difference as we help to our country.

Thank you Torchablazed for your comment. People from other countries appreciate and look highly on our rich values. Hopefully the now generation and the future generations would keep and continue to practice the Filipino values which for certain, would bring forth positive attitude in us and eventually leads to a heightened nationalistic spirit.

we can help improve our country by starting in our own self. we cannot help improve our country if we cannot even improve our self. discipline is the first we must improve. we must be a good citizen and should all follow all the rules and regulations of our government. let's be a good model to everyone especially to the young ones. by doing that, we already contribute in changing this country even in a small way...

We can't blame other foreigners for what they have seen so far on our own country, good thing that they are frank and some have given their opinions what we must do. The bad thing is...we're all know that were on the down side of the earth, keeping up and struggling to live but they just pushing us down more and more. Filipinos are the best warriors in the world, we had been called long time ago to be the most govern and the richest country in southeast asia and so we can make all the possibility happen once more. Be responsive, student's must study, parent's..teach your children a better way of living, Be yourselves close to God. There's a lot more to make any changes and to be done. Philippines will stand again among any other countries....we never fall..we mustn't fall...were still going to fight once and for all. Damn! sorry I'm down again..stupid government of ours just keep goin me down.LOL

Time and again lots of people have commented on the state of our country but its sad to say that we havent dome anything to address it. The solution to our problem is right at the tip of our nose. We just dont have the resolve to act on it. I believe that there is still hope for us. With what is happening in the world right now, No country and no individual is standing on stable ground. This is the best time for us to put our act together and prove that we can do it.
