Beautiful - Saw 3 in my garage on the window today

As I returned from my daily bike ride I oput my bike into my garage. I saw something whiz by and it startled me slightly. Looking around I saw 2 butterflies on my garage window inside. They were actually "doing it" as I first saw them. By the time I ran inside grabbing my camera they had finsished their "deed" I guess. But I got a couple decent shots before they fluttered away. Not focused the best but they fluttered about so much. Do you have any idea the species that this one is at all? Do you have a lot of butterflies around your place? How cool. I love butterflies, they are such beautiful creatures. Don't they have really short lifespans though? And, if you touch their wings they live even shorter time? Or is that just an old wives tale?

You are correct, when you touch a butterfly's wing you brush the dusty scales off that give them color and attract a mate and help them fly.

I grabbed their feet as they were actually quite long ones setting them free outside the garage. I did not want to touch their fuzzy wings. You're right on. And butterflies do have a short life span. Most varieties anyhow do. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Well, I'm glad I was right about something, but that's really sad for the butterflies. I wonder how many kids have accidentely killed butterflies that way?

That is a Mourning Cloak butterfly, and I think you did a nice job with the picture. It is no wonder you have lots of butterflies, with all the flowers you grow. Some butterfly gardens could take a lesson from you.

butterfly - Normal butterfly
That is a very pretty butterfly for sure... I haven't seen anything like that around my area either... I just did a image search on what the lady said above me and what kind it is... It sure looks exactly the same so I don't believe it is.. We have the typical kinds of butterflies.

Yes I did I seen almost the exact same one as the one I seen... I used my moms camera to take that one it was a great shot better than some of the ones I normally take I used my mom's camera to take that sense she has a better zoom on her camera..

I have hardly seen any butterflies so far this year, the only thing that I have seen lots of in my garden are spiders. There are absolutely hundreds of them, luckily not always the huge monster ones but the little money spiders. Everytime I peg my washing out in the garden I always end up covered in them, I really hate the feel of their web on my skin. Great picture of the butterfly by the way.

We have not had a lot either until just recently. I have a lot of flowers planted to attract butterfglies and bees to do the p[ollinating so it was a shock not seeing them around. Only one of my apple trees bloomed this year for some odd reason as well. I love the feel of the butterflies skin. I grabbed them by their wings carefullty then let them free outside the garage. We always have tons of huge various ugly spiders as well all over the yard etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

this is so odd this year I have not seen hardly any' butterflies here and last year there were so many. once at the library I saw a whole swarm of monarch butterflies they were on their way to Mexico and to La Jolla Ca where they stop for awhile on their way to mexico. I saw one yellow butterbly the other day that looked like a cabbage moth, but that was the only one I have seen and thats so odd.

American Black Swallowtail Butterfly - Image of an American Black Swallowtail Butterfly
I'll have to dig out my Audubon book of insects as maybe I'll be able to identify what butterfly that is. We don't have to many colorful butterflies here, just plain white or yellow ones, but every once in a while will see really beautiful ones....usually around September one sees the Monarch butterflies since they are then making their flight down south...This photo I have here is of an American Black Swallowtail that I "rescued"--yup...for some reason it couldn't fly well, so I didn't want to see it squished or something so took it home with me...it only lived over night, so guess it was an old butterfly on it's way out..but sure was able to take some great photos of it while it lived..This is a picture of it outside my apt. building just before I "rescued" it from dangers...hehe

Hello dear Grandpa Bob. Quite often I can see butterflies flying around among the trees and grasses. They love to chase each other like a couple in love. I am so sorry that you missed snapping the wonderful time they are having. lol. Happy posting.

We get just a few different species of butterflys around my home. I am going to plant a butterfly garden soon and then I will be really excited to see if we get any different types of butterflys. I agree with the members that said it is a Mourning Cloak butterfly. I happen to have a book here that my daughter and I borrowed from the library and when I looked up in the book for this butterfly it is definitly what it is! It is beautiful you got a pretty good shot! They mate by each standing facing the opposite way with there back ends together. If they are startled while mating they will fly away still connected that way. So lol the next time I see this happen I will know what they are doing:)

Your post let me think of my child time. When I was young, I live near a garden. And sometimes I go to schoold and be off from school I see dragonfly near the small river. They are very small, flying around in the grass which at the river sid. I always want to catch them, and sometimes I catched one, then I give grass to it for eat. It's really eat it. Sometimes I put it alway, but sometimes the dragonfly is killed by me.:(

We have alot of butterflies in this area, and yellow seems to be the color I see the most. They love all the hibiscus bushes we have in this area. But what we really see alot of is hummingbirds. We get so many of those in late summer that our little town holds a huge hummingbird festival. Years ago when we were working on our yard and landscaping I had the sprinkler going in the grass since it was new sod. Suddenly a huge flock? of butterflies came and landed in the grass right under the sprinkler. Apparently they were thirsty. They were monarchs and were apparently migrating. There must of been 200 of them and they stayed in my yard all day. As I moved the sprinkler from area to area I was very careful to not step on them or injure them with the hose. The fun part was when they would land on me - my head, arms, shirt etc. They stayed in my yard until my young son came home to see them. Needless to say he was thrilled. We all felt blessed to have had that experience.
