I understand the distress. My grandparents had a poultry farm with chickens on it and I started out seeing how they were killed and it bothered me at first. But the truth is, if you refuse to eat anything that was live, then killed for you to eat..you'd die? You may not want to think of it this way, but plants are also living things and they have energy, a life force in them too, and they have to be killed for you to eat them. Believe it or not, the University at Chapel Hill in North Carolna has shown that when a plant is about to be killed, cut to be used as food, it emits a high frequency sound that sounds like a scream. It seems to know, in it's own way? Just because you cannot hear with your ears the sound..it does not mean the plant is not alive or will not suffer when killed for you to eat it. Whether it is meat (animal) or plant (fruits or vegetables) something must die for you to eat and live, OK? I will tell you, at least on my grandparents' poultry farm, the killing was done quickly and in a humane way. -As quick as you would harvest your plant to eat. The others were not around and allowed to see and it was very quick. We all wish it could be done differently? But the fact is, we need fresh food that was alive as close to the time we eat it as possible for us to stay healthy. This is only reality. It's OK to eat chicken. I would not deprive your self of it. Vegetarians that think they are not killing to eat are in denial. If your feelings need to get it from a smaller farm to have it done quicker, so you don't feel bad, go to a local farm and ask that it be done this way and the farmer will be glad to have it done fast for you and before you show up to get your chicken. The bigger farms are not as nice to the animal or bird about it and I think this may be what you saw? Smaller farms take more care to be humane. Chicken and fish are good tasting and healthy! Enjoy!

I enjoyed your response Gargoyle! Well written and researched! Yes plants are living creatures much like animals, and they do scream when they are harvested. If you have ever been nearby, when a large tree is cut, you will certainly hear it scream as it falls. Its a very chilling sound, and quite unforgetable. I live on a Farm in Ontario Canada.

I try not to eat anything I've been introduced to in a social setting. However, if it's from a supermarket and ready prepared, it's fair game.

I must admit that I have butchered my share of chickens. I was introduced to it very early and never gave it a thought since we were going to eat the chicken. That is what we raised them for. But I can understand how it does affect any one that was not raised doing that. We also raised rabbits for the dinner table though I knew hoe to butcher them I couldn't bring my self to do them. but chickens ere just different. Maybe because we never had any of them for pets.
