How do you tell a child that his pet died?

My 4 year old niece's pet fish died today after just a week here at home. I didn't know how to explain to her that it's dead and why or how. She was shocked when I told her and she just stared at the fish in the fish bowl floating. I ended up promising her that I'll buy her a new one. How do you usually tell a child that his or her pet died?

I will tell normally to the child and i will convince that the child should not feel further and I will try to made happy.

Yes, it is important to make the child happy. It isn't healthy for a child to feel too depressed or sad in such a young age. Thank you for your response.
