Cats walking on the table

I've always been really laid back with my cat about walking on the tables or counters because I lived alone. She used to do it a lot when she was younger, but I hadn't seen her do it ages. Now I have a roommate, so I figured I should probably keep her off the table even though we never actually eat there, we always eat in front of the TV or the computer. Anyhow the other day I walked into the kitchen and my cat was sprawled out in the middle of the kitchen table. So I decided to lay down the law and yelled at her and tried to shoo her off the table. She didn't even flinch, opened her eyes and closed them again. I have to say I laughed and didn't bother to push her off after that. My roommate is out of the country for a while anyhow. I figured because I never yell at her and because loud noise usually scares her that it would be no problem if she started doing it again. Foiled again sigh.

One of my cats will get on the counter if there is no water in her bowl, heading for the sink. My other cat will get on the counter periodically, usually when my husband is in the kitchen making chocolate milk, then he will walk across the stove. They do not get on the table, we do not use our's either. They are so funny

They are indeed silly. Jakie, waits until we have finished our showers and he will go to the bath tub, and watch until the water goes down, then lie in the wet tub. He'll come out and go to my husband , and he'll say man how did you get wet, I say he was taking his shower

Interesting, I never thought to check if she has water in her bowl when she jumps on the table. I can't break her of the habit of drinking out of the toilet though, so normally if she's out of water in the bowl she'll just head for the toilet. Silly cat.

lol that's really funny how your cat reacted to your yelling. i don't thinking yelling really does anything to them anyway. it'd be easier if you squirt water at them or make loud noise by banging on something. at home, my cats basically rules the household. they can claim whatever surface their own and my parents will only coo how cute they look. they are the kings and queen of my home. they'd come onto the dining table while we are eating and check out the dishes. if one or many suit them, they'd sit down and demand to be fed there and then! that's how pampered my cats are.

I hear ya. Although my cat is probably the craziest cat I've ever known. She doesn't like tuna or milk! I've never seen a cat that doesn't like those things. She prefers dry cat food and water. Oh well, it's better for her apparently!

Hmm cats are very independent and they usually do what they want to do, I think it might be a little late to start putting new rules in place as most animals you really need to instill in them the rules of life when they are very young...Maybe if you put a bowl of lemons on the table aren't cats supposed to hate that smell...maybe

Hmm, hadn't heard about the lemons thing before. I wouldn't be surprised though :) She reacted really well to the spray bottle when she was younger. I was trying to get her to stop scratching. She had a habit of crawling into my lap by pulling herself up using my legs lol. I don't think I'm too worried about this habit though, it amuses me more than anything I suppose.

my cat parks himself on the table alot also. he doesnt go onto the counters fortunately. I usually tolerate unless I have guests then i get serious about getting him off the table. Otherwise I dont really care. He doesnt shed on the table or anything. I love my cat he is a sweet pea.

My cat hops onto the counter from time to time. Usually after getting on the table because it's a shorter distance from there. But I think you're right, it isn't a very big deal. It was actually very cute when I saw my cat on the table. I just figured I would give it a shot, see if it would work for when I do actually have guests around. Looks like I'll have to pick her up and move her in that case.

i think everyone would agree that a squirt water bottle is an excellent tool for modifying a cat's behavior. you have to spray them each and every time you would find her, too. sometimes it works. sometimes they just get more clever about not being found out ! all i have to do is reach for the bottle, or make a squirting noise even WITHOUT a bottle. maybe your cat is jealous of your roommate? that's why she started up again to torment you on the table. do you really want the cat off the table? is your new roommate upset about this? every single cat lover has been reduced to "nothing" by the simple stare of a cat. cats are independent. usually we end up being trained by them.

Has your roomate actually complained about the cat being on the tables or counters? If he/she hasn't, then I'd say just let the cat keep doing it. I don't like my cats on the counters, but on the tables I don't care. One thing I can't stand is when visitors see the cats on a table and make some remark about it. It's MY house, and MY cats, and I don't like other people telling me what I should or shouldn't be allowing them to do. But since this is your roommate, they have a right to an opinion on it. But if they don't mind, don't worry about it.

No my roommate hasn't said anything, so I think we're okay. He's a big fan of cats too, although the litter box is right next to his couch so I'm guessing he's not a fan of that! lol. There isn't really a better place to put it in our apartment unfortunately, it's pretty small. But I agree, I don't think I'll worry about it. I was more amused than anything when she just looked at me sigh.

Hello smile44, I know cats can be very funny like that, no fear of your, my cats likes to sit on the coffee table one day my sister camr to visit and she don't likes cats and she is very fussy, so there my jumped on the coffee table I shouted at her and not a movement by my sister looking in disgust and my husband just said off! she jumped off with her tail in the air taken no notice of me and yet I'm the one that feeds her.
