It is widely believed that water is essential for health. Also it is hyped that water is the only thing that fix no limit on its consumption . So, we advise everybody to drink as much water as one can and sometimes we pressurise our children to drink much whether or not they are not thirsty . The packaged drinking water- so called mineral water- marketing companies have to tell that water is a detoxicating agent and hence we should drink as much as we can. But dieticians at British Dietetic Association and others has sometihing else to reveal. They analyse that our body has in place its own inbuilt detox system in liver and kedney and there is no need to push too much of water into the body to do the hyped 'flushing out ' of toxic materials . Too much water may dilute the blood salt to much lower level and creates an imbalance between the blood and the inside of cells and organs. When the salt solution in the blood is weaker than the solution in the cells and organs it supplies, water passes into those cells and organs. This type of imbalance may prove fatal resulting in water intoxication . Water intoxication occurs when a person drinks so much water that the other nutrients in the body become diluted to the point that they can no longer do their jobs. Jennifer Strange died water intoxication after consuming too much water to win a contest of drinking the most water without having to go to toilet.

Thanks akumei, for that piece of information. I had heard about it somewhere else also. Just goes to show that excess of anything is bad for your health, even the supposedly good things. But I should also add that this shouldn't be an excuse for those people who don't like to drink much water during the day to justify their act. Water IS essential for our body and only 2-3 glasses in a day won't suffice. I've seen people who carry on through the whole day with very little water during the work hours. If you don't increase the intake of water during these hours, chances are more that your body will overheat, and stomach and other disorders may ensue. This warning is only for those people who obsessively drink water, hoping it'll make them fairer or healthier. Once again, thanks for sharing it with us, akumei. Cheers.

I have heard about this, but you have to drink a large amount of water like constantly for 24 hours. I think the reason they push to drink water is because the normal human will not exceed the amount that we need or that would be unhealthy for us. I would think you would have to do it on purpose.
