How Much Do You Spend On Groceries Per Week?

When I was married with two children I used to spend 80 - 100 US dollars per week on food, diapers etc. I won't tell you who accused me, lol, but after the divorce I was told that a certain someone believed I was stealing money from him during our fifteen-year marriage because food doesn't cost that much. So I was just wondering what is the average everyone spends per week on groceries? I've been told that 80 - 100 dollars is way too much.

There are 6 of us and I spend about $200-$300 a week on groceries. Yesterday I spent $270 and didn't get meat, that I got at Wal-Mart a few days ago and spent $80 there.

I'm hoping that next week I will be able to spend quite a bit less because this week I bought a good bit of meat that was on sale and stocked up. This morning I put up 36 cups of cooked ground meat and cup up 6 fryer chickens (where were way too small but only cost 99 cent a pound). I'm boiling the backs now for stock. I still have some raw meat to put up too. I hope that I will not have to buy any meat for a while. I also made the kids (got 4) some breakfast wraps for the week, although they probably will not last that long. I still have to make some pancakes and coffee cakes for next week. We invested in a big freezer a few years ago because the fridge/freezer was just not cutting it for us cause I like to buy in bulk whenever I can and you can't do that with a regular fridge.

See, this sounds more reasonable to me.. anywhere from $150-200 a week. I usually shop a few times a week because otherwise I don't have room for the produce and meat that I buy. As it gets eaten (I can use 3 romaine hearts and a whole pack of cherry tomatoes in two large dinner salads) I purchase more to restock. I know that I don't want to live on beans and rice and mac and cheese and ramen noodles, and I want more than one piece of chicken lol.

Hi gtargirl, I can say it is really way expensive..LOL! Maybe it is possible to cut it off to save some money! Anyway, my husband and I are spending less than $100 every 2 weeks of our grocery! We are really trying to budget to save money and we are very particular on the things we want to buy!

That doesn't sound like all that much for a family of four. I spend about that much for a family of 3, although prices lately have gone up a lot. Plus I buy a lot of fresh fruits and veggies and they are not cheap.

I know what you mean about fruit and veggies. We tried to buy cherries the other day and it cost around $4.99 a pound. Life without a bowl of cherries! It's tough. Wasn't fruit and veggies a poor man's meal a long time ago?

Sure, but that was back when people grew their own, or stole from a neighbor's farm that was so big they didn't even notice anything missing. I do grow some of my own, but not enough to sustain my family.

Fresh produce is NOT cheap, although I have discovered that I can get romaine hearts, cherry tomatoes, eggs, pears, apples, and other things at the 99 cent store and they are fine. Other things that are through the roof now as far as cost - ground coffee, decent bread, milk. I don't know how anybody could make it a week on $50 unless they literally spend $3 or less a meal and only for themselves.

I did a discussion on this subject a few months ago and was amazed at how consistent the replies were. We spend about $80 per week but we used to spend closer to $160, on foodstuffs only. There are three adults in our family and when I stopped work we had to daw our belts in. I am amazed how well we can live on a lot less. We used to waste a lot of money. We have tried to live on $50 per week. But frankly unless you want live off lettuce leaves and nothing else, that's quite hard to do.

Yes, I'm afraid lettuce leaves won't sustain us very well. Thanks P1kef1sh. Have a great weekend now.

I think that depends on the area you live in. Certain areas of the country are more expensive than others. City stores charge more than suburbs, stuff like that. Anyhow, we are five and I spend $20/week on milk alone. $100 for groceries is a good week. But my husband also insists on a lot of meat. Anyhow, if you have diapers in the bill, too, and baby food, that's a big chunk right there. I'm glad we are finally a diaper free zone. As to a certain someone claiming that food doesn't cost that much, when was the last time this certain someone went shopping for the entire family? I recently had surgery and had to send hubby to the store. He came back and was amazed at how much food prices had gone up. He was like "I didn't buy the case of pop because it was too expensive at $3 for the pack. It should be $2." I quietly informed him that $3 was the correct special and I had seen $2 the last time about three years ago. We went over more prices. It was a real eye opener for him. Shows how rarely he goes to the store. He was really upset about the meat prices, lol.

First of all, I hope you're recovering from you surgery, my friend. And yes you are right, that certain someone never had to shop for the entire family. Plus now he's a vegetarian, almost a vegan, which cuts out his meat expenses. I guess it's a smart idea to let the man shop once in a while. We are also a diaper-free zone but now other expenses have popped up. Ah life! Thanks for dropping in, get well and enjoy your weekend.

You only spend 80 to 100 dollars a week and you had to buy food and diapers? That is kind of cheap. We spent 120 dollars a week when our boys were small. Men do no know how much groceries cost and think that we spend the same amount that their mums did. Now with the two of us we spend on an average of one hundred dollars a week because we also include non food stuff as well.

Hello dear gtargirl. I have not exact idea of amount of money spent on groceries, but the total amount of the money spent on food and some other stuff amounts to 2000 RMB these months, as the price has been rising. I hate it when everything is so expensive. Enjoy yourself.

Hi Gtargirl. That certain someone just needed something to hurt you with. To make himself feel less guilty about all the problems he made himself.LOL! So keep laughing about it, you know you did not steal his money. So do I. It is just away they try to get you back for being so strong. They don't like women to be to strong , hahaha! 80 to 100, I already give this out in Euro's. For just the two of us. One week is more expensive then the other of course. But I zeldum see a week go by with less than 50 euro's. That is around $80.00. If you want to eat something yummy, you need more money. That is normal. Take care, margajoe. Groetjes.

Um... these days?? Who is he kidding? I guess it depends where you live and your cost of living but $100 is not way too much to spend on groceries for four people for a week. I see you included diapers in that total, I couldn't lol. I probably average $400+ a month JUST for groceries. I'm not talking about other things like cleaning supplies or trash bags or anything household. To be honest right now with everything so expensive it's probably closer to $525. I am off to read the other responses you got so I can figure out who actually has a clue.

Right now we are spending around 50 dollars a week for a family of four but that will change soon. In times which are not so lean we pay approximately 100 - 150 a week on food because we like to prepare special dinners.

Fifty dollars? Wow, that's good spending. Between my teenage son and I we have cut it down to about $100 a month. Of course, mom and dad help out a lot. My teenage son eats quite a lot and it has to be healthy, protein drinks, veggies, fruit etc. Thanks for dropping by turtlegirl. Hope you have an awesome weekend.

I usually spend about $50-$70 a week on groceries since sometimes I eat out or have food delivered. The cost of food has gone up quite a bit so it costs more than what I used to pay for the same items. Milk, eggs, bread and some other things are much more expensive now a days. I get all my toiletries and cleaning products from dollar stores to save money.

Well we spend about $293 a month for a family of 3. I really need to work on using my coupons more but here lately I have not. Of course the $293 also includes stuff for canning (fresh veggies and fruit).

I stock up on things like nappies and dog food when it is on offer. I like to eat lots of fresh vegetables so I tend to go grocery shopping three times a week. The amount of money I spend varies, even more so now because food prices are increasing. I think that I spend about fifty to sixty pounds a week on food for my family, baby things and pet products. I think that 80 to 100 dollars is reasonable for a family of four. I think that divorce can be bitter and I would take no notice of the person that thinks you stole money from your ex-husband.

In my family there is my hubby and I and four children, I spend £50 ($100 approx) a week to feed us all and that is including everything, food, nappies, toiletries everything. I have a set budget for my shopping, and whatever I do not spend of it goes into our savings. Last month I put £100($200 approx) in it.

I would say for a family of 4 you were doing very well. We have a family of five and spend around $150.00 per week. Your husband should have been happy you were spending as little as you were.

I'm sure you could have gotten by on less, but I'm also sure that certain someone would have complained about the food you were or weren't buying. With a baby in diapers and all the household items that a family needs I don't think that is out of line at all. I live alone and usually spend $150 or so a month on food alone. I don't shop every week, more like every 10 days to 2 weeks. Like one other said, I buy mostly what is on sale and what I find in the reduced price baskets. Occasionally I'll be out of something that isn't on sale and I feel I really NEED it so I'll buy it. Oh by the way, is that certain someone trying to by food for himself and a family? If not, how would he know "food doesn't cost that much".
