any suggestions for a pet behavioural problem? i have two female cats from the same litter. they are about 2 years old now. one of them has always been rather funny about using the litter box. she would rather poop right beside the litter box, even if the litter is sparkling new and clean. but now lately, i find she's been peeing in our laundry baskets of clean clothing, which is SO maddening, and pooping all over my bedroom carpet. her behaviour is definitely getting much worse. i do not know what to do with her! she's the most loving, sweetest, gentle little cat, and my children simply love her. the vet says she has no medical problems that would cause such an issue, according to tests they've ran. i think she is just very finicky and a cat of real habit. but i don't know what to do. there must be SOMETHING i can do! does anyone have any suggestions? has anyone ever had this problem? getting rid of her is not an option. she is part of our family.

Have you changed the litter brand recently? How about the food, routine, etc? First off, I would add a second litter box (she may be tired of sharing, the on e you have could be too small, or the other cat may be chasing her off). If that doesn't work, go to the vet. She could have a urinary tract infection or other illness and that is why she uses the bathroom wherever.

i think i will do that...purchase two larger litter boxes, and put them in very different areas. hopefully the other cat will clue in that only one of them is for her to use, and to save the other for her sister! pinky (the fussy one) is a very fussy little cat..but she's so sweet. god, i just love her little face! she's staring at me right now, as if she knows i'm talking about her :)

I would get a second litter box. My vet told me that if you have more than one cat you should really have one litter box per cat plus one extra. I had a Siamese cat who wouldn't pee in the same place as he pooped so I had 3 litter boxes just for him or he would poop on the floor or pee in a corner. He would also pee on the cement if he had a urinary tract infection.

First of all, thank you so much for not even considering getting rid of your cat. I really admire you for saying that. You could try this: Confine the cat, her food, water, bed, toys and litter box in one room like a bathroom until she uses the box for 3 days. Praise her a lot when she does use it and give her a treat. Keep the box extra clean for her. Then let her out for a few hours and watch her. If she uses the box, praise and give treats. This may work for you. The other thing you could try is Cat Attract Litter. You can get it at any big pet supply store like Petco or Petsmart. We have Peaches who is peeing all over the place, so I know what you mean. Try to keep the laundry away from her until she is retrained.
