Ok i have a question to ask you about bananas. How ripe do you like them to be before you will eat them? Do you prefer them still tinged with green or do you like them nearly black? Maybe you just prefer them in between. Also bruises, will you eat them if they have a bruise or just eat around it? Finally how do you eat it, just peel & bite, or chop it up with sugar on top? As for me, i like them tinged with green, won't eat bruises and prefer them chopped with a sprinkle of sugar.

Great discussion topic, and a good laugh for those of us who grew up in places like Jamaica in the Caribbean where bananas are a staple diet. Just for the record, the banana is very versatile indeed, and in it's green unripe state, it is peeled (under water to prevent staining of the hands) and boiled to serve as a starch like potatoes or yams. To satisfy the market in foreign countries like North America or Britain, bananas are harvested while still green, and shipped to those countries, where they are then stored and ripened before distribution to the retail outlets. Handling problems that occur during harvesting and transportation remain undetected until the fruit has ripened, when the bruises then show up as brown or black marks on the yellow skin. Finally to the eating, and the sky is the limit for the variations, as you have already realised from some of the answers. Easiest is to peel and eat or to cut up on your bowl of cereal, especially corn flakes. They make great cakes and fritters, but for a real treat, put some of your favourite ice cream into a cereal bowl, put in some strawberries with their juice, cut up the banana on top, sprinkle on some caster sugar and cover with whipped or double cream. Enjoy!

Thank you for your detailed response, i found it very informative. It's interesting to know how bananas are viewed in their native countries of origin.

I will not eat green bananas, I always think that green bananas are hard and not so sweet. I buy them with a slight green tinge and then I leave them to ripen for a couple of days so that they are sweeter and softer. I cannot eat bananas when they have black on them it makes me heave. My Mum used to eat them when the skins on them were really black and the banana had them mushy bits on them, gross. I take it out of the skin and chop it into chunks.

If I am going to eat the bananas, then I like them ripe and yellow. But, the best bananas are the ones that are all black and look almost rotten, because then they are sweather, perfect for making a banana bread! One can add some walnuts too, but the best are without, I think, as then it is just the banana flavour that one enjoys!

I like my bananas green. When I buy them at the store I always look for the green ones because by the next day they are allready turning yellow. I do not like them when they start to get brown, they have a funny taste to them. I eat my bananas withjut plain or with peanut butter.

Hi hezoid! I love bananas,i like them when they're ripe but not over ripe. I can't eat them when they're bruised, unless in pancakes or some other form. Being a fan of bananas i eat them all sorts of ways, but nothing beats just peeling it and sinking my teeth in. {{{HUGS}}}

Good day.. I like my bananas when it just as ripe. I like them firm and not saggy. Bananas is my comfort fruit, it is available in all seasons and just love them as solo fruits or with in company of salads. Banana shake is one of my best fruit drinks.

I only eat them green. If they're yellow, they're no good! I think it's the sweetness and slimy-ish texture of a ripe banana that puts me off so much, and green bananas are more firm and have a bit of a tartness to them. I usually just peel and eat, but I'll, sometimes, slice them into a bowl or eat them in a fruit salad. Yellow bananas usually end up in smoothies or banana bread, here!

I like mine very ripe but not black or mushy. I don't like them when they're still green. When they're very ripe, they're so sweet, almost like sugar so they don't need any added sweetener. I like to chop them and put them in cereal and oatmeal, or mashed in breads, muffins, pancakes, or sliced in peanut butter sandwiches and fruit salad or pureed in fruit smoothies. They're so yummy and versatile.

The black banana is good for milkshakes. Bruised bananas go in milk shakes too! The pure yellow banana is good for plain eating. The slightly green banana needs some more ripening. The peels of all bananas go into my compost bins. That's my opinion.

I like my bananas in between, ripe but not over ripe. I will eat it if it is bruised but not badly bruised. I like to peel and eat or make banana pudding with them, they are also good sliced and put on cereal. I have never tried them sliced with sugar. Oh I also love to mash a banana up and add peanut butter and a little bit of sugar and make sandwiches out of it.

I like my bananas in the middle, I don't mind if there is a little green in them. I don't like the bruises, I won't eat them with it. I also like to have them cold. Sometimes i'll put them in my cereal. I have never had them chopped up with sugar on them.

I love bananas so I'm going bananas too! I personally like mine with a tiny bit of green left on them, I think they taste the best then. I can't imagine eating a banana when it's completely turned black! BLECH! Each to their own I guess. :o) I have never heard of chopping up the banana and putting sugar on it but that does sound quite tasty. I usually eat my bananas by peeling and biting them and if there are brown spots I usually work my way around them. When I have bananas handy I also like to chop them up in pieces and put them in my cereal in the morning or even on top of ice cream at night as an after dinner treat. Have you ever seen the baby bananas? It's like a little bunch of bananas but mini sized. They have to only be maybe 5 inches in length, definitely bite size! They are more expensive then regular bananas because I think they are more of a novelty item.

I like mine in the middle. I don't really want them to green and I dont want them black. Only time I let them get really ripe is when I am going to make banana pudding and I have not made that in awhile.. Yum.. that sounds so good.. I think I am going to have to make some soon..
