Seeing yourself thin

In my profession, I work with weight loss a lot. I have found that most people who have trouble losing weight have something in common: They all constantly "see," visualize, or constantly talk about themselves as FAT. This is self-defeating behavior for several reasons. First, and most important, what you think about most is what you are unconsciously setting yourself up to become. Second, your mind/brain can work without your body, but your body can do nothing without your brain telling it what to do. It is like the body is a robot, and the mind is the computer that controls the robot. If you constantly think of yourself as fat, then the body does what it is told. On the other hand, when you see and think of yourself the way you want to be, 2 things happen: 1. your subconscious mind picks up these images and starts creating ways to make it happen. The imagination does not know the difference between fantasy and reality, so it takes the fantasy and starts to make it a reality. 2. your body, like the robot, also starts doing what it is told. My point is that if you think you are fat, but want to be thin, use your imagination (the bridge to the unconscious) to your advantage and see yourself the way you want to be. This will subconsciously motivate you toward your goal. Give it a try. It works. I know...I have done it myself personally (lost 80 lbs), and professionally. Remember: this is a tool. There are no magic pills, potions, exercise machines, or anything that will work...without YOU.

I am in the process of trying to lose weight myself. The hospital I work at is doing a contest called "The Biggest Loser." It's a confidential program and whoever loses the biggest percentage of weight wins X amount of dollars. I don't expect to win the money but this program has opened my eyes and made me pay more attention to what I eat. We are in the fourth week and so far I have lost 6 pounds and a pant size. I can't complain for the most part, but, dang it..I want it to come off faster... LOL. I know there's no magic cure, but let me tell ya, it sure gets frustrating at times. I wish I could "think" thin more than what I do but, when I look in the mirror all I see is a big tummy and hips. I never used to be that way, never been on a diet in my life..so it's really hard for me to control my food. So what you are basically saying is that you have to get it in your head that you are NOT fat and to think you are thin? It sure sounds easier said than done..........

I am not saying to literally look in the mirror and pretend that what you see is not there. I am suggesting that you stop looking in the mirror and use your imagination to "create" an image of what you want and keep focusing on that, instead of focusing on what you don't want. If you want to be thinner, and all you think about is fat, it is like swimming upstream trying to get results. When you focus your attention on your goal (start with small ones and work up to the bigger ones), it becomes more like floating downstream...you stop fighting with yourself. What is the worst thing that could happen by doing this? It certainly can't hurt, and it might even work well for you :) I am a hypnotherapist and personal trainer. I have worked with people who were doing "biggest loser" contests. If you have any specific questions, PM me and I would be happy to answer them. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I'm sure I will have questions considering I've never done this before. I used to be tall and thin and 118-120 lbs. and boy, I would love to get there again! At least close to it!! I know the years take their toll, but man, this is ridiculous. I like to think I am living a healthy lifestyle...somewhat...I eat healthy foods and exercise. I slip on the food, tho, cause chocolate is my downfall! Any tips or hints will be very much appreciated!!! Thanks again. :)

One thing that I really try to get my clients to understand is that there are no "bad" foods...it is your relationship with food that needs to change. If you just HAVE to have chocolate, make sure it is in your food plan. You can eat anything you want, just not everything you want all the time. Adopting this attitude helps because deprivation often leads to binge eating behavior, especially for what I call "chronic dieters." I have found that eating 5-6 smaller meals, including snacks, makes it easier because you don't get hungry. When you are not hungry, you can make better food choices. Whatever you do, remember: diets are temporary and what you are going for is permanent fat loss...and don't give up!!

I also think that people especially women expect to have the basic shape of our bodies become more like the movie s tars we see. but in all reality we become small but if we have wide hips then the hips are going to still be wide. I know this happened to me. I used to weigh 165 lb. I now weigh 132 lb. but when i look in the mirror I still see the same shape. My hips will always be wide because it is a family trait. My great grandmother had thin and she was thin as did my aunts and they were thin also. As is the smaller upper body (I don't mean bust)

The good news is that along with your vosualizations, exercise can help you overcome your genetics. You can do heavier weights on your upper body (mainly shoulders & arms) to grow a bit, then do light weights & more repetitions on the lower body, which will be more slimming. Although this doesn't really change your genetics, it will give you a more balanced look :)

Just remember that your mind and body are connected. Your body will follow what the mind sees. So, if you want to lose weight, visualizing yourself the way you would like to be can subconsciously motivate you to do what it takes to get there. Seeing yourself as FAT does the same thing. So thinking about what you DO want will help you much more than seeing yourself the way you don;t want to be. Another thing you might want to try is writing affirmations, such as "I am thin, lean, and healthy," or "every day I become more lean and healthy," "everything I eat makes me thin" is a great one because that can motivate you to eat things that will make you thin.

Most of the time I think I am thinner then I am. I bump into things thinking that I should have cleared it. I guess that I remember being that thinner person. Totally wanting to reject the idea that I am overweight. But I will try this. And See if I start thinking like I am a thin person if it helps me to drop some unwanted pounds. I will do anything if it helps. I am doing this all on will power, no medicines or shakes. Just real foods. I am down 5 pounds. It is just a start! But it is still a good start.
