I am allergic to cats and now we have an issue where the dog is causing bodily harm to them and are trying to find her a new home. I just don't want to deal wtih training a new dog anyways but my kids really want a pet they can hold and play with. So I'm thinking no hamsters or birds and we already tried hermit crabs and they kept dying. We tried fish and they kept dying and the kids couldn't hold them. Do you have any ideas? My son told me today he wanted an alligator and we could keep a rubber band on his snout so he wouldn't bite us (haha).

Rabbits take a LOT of commitment. And can be easily injured from the rough handling of preschoolers. If you're serious about getting a rabbit, getting a larger breed is better because the kids won't try to pick it up (which could easily result in dropping the rabbit and possibly paralysis). Rabbits live 10+ years and are not something to take lightly. Check out www.bunnybunch.org for some good info on rabbits.

To read your note, it sounds like you have tried most anything. Why do you say no hamster? How about a rabbit, it can be kept outside but they could still handle it. Or a guinea pig. The can be so much fun. When my kid were little we had one. They could take it outside and it never ran away. Those are my picks LOL have a great day. Jewel http://footwork-reviews.com

I think you might just want to get something like an aquarium where the kids can look at it and help you in caring for the fish. Try another type of fish that is easier if the past kind didn't work out so well. There really aren't any good pets for preschoolers to actually care for themselves. There are pets that you could have that would be interesting for the kids to have supervised interaction with, but they all require a lot of commitment on your part. I'd say if you must have a small and furry pet that the kids could interact with, rats are a really good choice if the kids aren't too grabby. Rats balance so that they are not as likely to suffer falls. Unlike rabbits, they're not going to kick your kids while they're trying to get away. Their nips are not too bad if they ever do nip. And you can rescue rats from an animal shelter too as they often have them there, which would teach the kids a valuable lesson. Rats are definitely more sociable than a typical hamster.

Hi kimberlylynn..the avatar you used is actually my cat...garfield..too bad you are allergic to cats..you can try birds..but i think if you accidentally inhale their food .. the powdery type could cause asthma as well..the best I can suggest is for you to own a pet fish...a small aquarium and place it in your sala or anything near a faucet..like in the kitchen..so that your child could look at it while eating. Look for a small aquarium and small filter and design it...your child will surely love it.I have a small aquarium and I have a ghost knife fish..it's a nocturnal fish so he's sleeping in the morning..and a janitor fish..the kind that doesn't grow..you can teach your child to feed the fish plus its less maintained unlike rabbits, cats,or dogs..and it doesn't cause any allergies to anyone bec. fish lives in the aquarium..well it's just a suggestion....you can view my profile and look for my aquarium pic from my photos..check it out girl..you might say..okay..I'll just get a fish for a pet..;p

really there are no other animals that arent going to be too small for preschoolers. I have an american eskimo spitz (dog) who i didnt have to train at all. I got him when he was a puppy and they are such sweet natured animals. My son is 5 and he jumps all over him and pulls on his hair and ears and the dog just takes it. But these dogs are bred for agility and are very intelligent. I have a chihuhua also, but they arent that great with kids and can have a lil attitude when they want to. but good luck in your search.

Growing up my sisters and i had: Dogs Cats Rabbits Guinea pigs Fish A hedgehog Hamster Sheep & lambs Cows & Calves Horses & foals Goats However we lived on a farm and we always had a wide variety of "pets" to choose from. At one point we had a turkey who was my 2 year old sisters best friend. VERY VERY protective of her. If a stranger came into the yard they couldn't get within 10 feet of her. They even played on the swings together (will find picture!)
