Do you use a dryer, or hang your laundry out?

I am in Europe right now and something very funny to observe is that people hang their clothes out instead of using a proper dryer. I would like to know from you, do you use a dryer for your clothes or you decorate buildings and houses with your laundry? LOL

Here in the Philippines most of the people in cities are using dryer while others put it inder the sun to let it dry maybe beacuse they can't afford to buy a washing machine with a dryer.but dryer has a lot of advantages like it will get dry as soon as possible, unlike when you put it under the sun you need to wait if it is dry or not.lolz!

True that is exactly what I was commenting but the bad side of dryers is that they ruin some clothes, and some you cannot even think in putting inside a dryer.

Valeria Unless its the rainy season we usually hang our clothes in the patio, terrace or outside, whichever fits us well. That's the custom here. During rain, we have to dry it in the dryer but then that's out of compulsion. Thanks.

Thank you Mimpi for answering and yes I see your viewpoint, I lived in USA for many years and I never saw them hanging clothes their dryers are very cheap and I think to some extent dryers are good because of the fast and practical side but nothing like the smell of hanged clothes under the sun.

I guess if you have the time to wait for the air to dry them then go right at it. I doubt anyone from seatle hang drys their clothes, they might wait an intire lifetime before they ever got dry. For me I prefer to use a machine. It is just faster that way and more effective in keeping my clothes looking fresh.

In France and all Europe I think people use to hang their laundry instead of using a dryer. I think we economize in engergy by doing so and also the clothes do not get ruined as in dryer.

here in my country the atmosphere was realy humid and right now the season is a bit rainy and mix with hot whether. We usually use spin dryer and hang them out side to let the air dry. We usually hang them at the back door or in the side of the house. It doen's matter if we look like having a fiesta of clothes but its better to use a electric dryer cause the electricity is really expensive.

I wash clothes in my washing machine, then I dry them in my condenser. It is like a tumble dryer. The weather lately has been showery so my clothes wouldn't get dry if I hung them on a washing line in my garden. My next door neighbor hangs her washing out to dry but it often gets wet in the rain. Before I moved I had a tiny kitchen with only room for a washing machine. I hung clothes in my airing cupboard or on the radiators to dry. I wasn't allowed to hang washing outside because my cottage was grade two listed with my regulations. I love traveling and in Cairns, Australia I hung my washing outside to dry but all of it got stolen! I had to buy new clothes when I got off the train in Brisbane.

OMG stealing your clothes, wow! Well seems you created a way to have your clothes dried somehow, I prefer the sun for some reasons but I used dryer many years and is very fast and practical. My point is for me when I came to Europe seeing the clothes hanging outside the apartments and when a wind would blow I would end up with some underwear in my garden caused me to be like Wow!

I have had a few dryers in my time, and they work great, but they also cost money to run, and today it just cost to much, so now I hang my clothes on a clothes line, as it saves me money. After all, what did we do before we had dryers? There is nothing like the smell of fresh dried clothes off the line!

We live in an apartment complex and use a dryer. However, my mother-in-law hangs up her laundry. In fact she lived in the cold regions of Michigan where they get a fair amount of snow and she would hang her laundry out all year long. Plus she is doing laundry for 7 kids still at home as well as her and her husband. Hanging the laundry on the line makes it smell really good and it is a lot cheaper then running a dryer...still not sure I will ever do much of it, but there are advantages.

I would love to be able to hang my washing out at all, but it just keeps raining and so I cannot hang anything out. I do have a drier but it is expensive to run because of all the electric that it uses.

I hang out my laundry because the dryer in my apartment belongs to my landlord and he doesn't let me use it all the time. If you can afford a dryer by all means use one. Or you can stick to the traditional like people in Europe and let it hang out.

If you get a lot of sunlight, then why won't you go for the most energy efficient way of drying your clothes? Already fuel prices are high up and maybe someday dryers would become obsolete, maybe? :D

It is a practice here in our country to hang clothes outside to dry. It is said that clothes hung under the sun dissinfects dome bacteria on the clothes. It is seldom that dryers are used here. It is more practical for people here to sun dry clothes specially when not everyone can afford even buying washing machines or dryers even. If ever someone owned a dryer, they would prefer to sun dry them since it saves energy and reduces electric bills.

I totally understand that and in some ways I prefer the sun also, you gave many reasons above why one should use the sun instead of dryer. Thank you.

I am in the USA. I have used driers for many years, but years ago, I used to hang my clothes out to dry. Back when I was a child, nearly every yard had clotheslines for hanging clothes out to dry. Now, it is rare. However, like me, many people are going back to hanging clothes out to dry in order to cut back on expenses. It really doesn't take so long for them to dry outside, especially on a sunny, breezy day. I love the smell of the clothes when they dry outside. I don't like how stiff my bath towels become. I use softener in the rinse, but they still dry stiff on the line. But, towels take too long in my drier and that is what prompted me to hang clothes outside. I grew up in the midwest, and when I moved to Southern California for a year, I was shocked to find that people had their washers and driers outdoors! We couldn't because of our weather, but out there, it was usually dry, so I guess they put them outside and that seemed so odd.

I've never used a dryer for my laundry, valeria. In Australia we have big backyards and hang our washing on a clothesline for it to dry in the sun. Some people use dryers in winter when there's a lot of rain, and if they live in apartment blocks - but most people normally hang their washing out. Clothes dryers use up a lot of electricity, and we are being encouraged to save power and water to help the planet.
