I'm losing my herring....

heh, well - not exactly loosing it, but eating it. My snack food tonight is pickled herring in "real sour cream" on triscuit type crackers. it has been a long time since I have enjoyed this 'delicacy' and I really do enjoy it - but a little bit goes a long way and if I buy a large jar most gets wasted. So, it is good for a treat once in a long while and then I am set for some time. Another herring I like but do not enjoy often is kippered (herring) snacks in a tin - I buy it frequently enough, but my children tend to gobble it up before I get to it. :( that is one that I could enjoy every week. Do you like herring? do you like it pickled? if pickled do you like it with or without the sourcream. I like the onions that are in the pickled herring jar too! mmmm.

I like pickled herring in sour cream but I have not bought it in years... I prefer kippered herring. I love kippers and eggs scrambled up with some onions, but I also love it straight out of the tin. So do my kitties.

your kitties and my kiddies! can we get a sliver of kippers for ourselves? I have never tried them cooked in eggs... that does sound inviting though. hmmm, maybe I can manage to keep a tin hidden long enough to try it!

Oooooh, you're good - haven't lost your touch! I saw the discussion title and of course assumed that it was written by someone with other than English as a first language, talking about losing their hearing. I decided to bake brownies at 10:30 tonight, of all things. They're cooling now. If I wait and have one with a glass of milk, I'll never get to bed tonight.

:) I love that you appreciate my form of wit. oh yum on the brownies.... why do we do that? make luscious treats when we know that it will be too late to enjoy them when they are finished?

I stayed up late and ate one anyway. Sounds like a nap on the couch later for me!

I've only ever had herrings in tomato sauce from a can. My dad loves them and I make them, for him with mashed potatoes with finely chopped onion in it and peas. We have the fish cold and the veges hot. I've only ever seen them in delicatessens and haven't been tempted to try them. Your pickled herring with onions and sour cream has me a bit curious, sounds quite yummy and delicious.

aha they are really strong flavored. my one daughter also will only eat fish sticks or tuna fish (in a salad) my son won't even get close to any fish that has been preserved (as in a can or jar) and will only eat certain fish such as a fresh caught bass or trout. my husband, daughter and I devour fish but husband does not like the pickled herrings

yes! my mother and I would enjoy them once or twice a year together (with the sour cream) it was always a tradition for us to share the jar no one else liked them at home. If only I could email you some - I got such a good price on them at 79cents for a 12 oz jar. it is the small jar - but like I said it will tide me over for some time.
