The Long Night

I was unwell in the night. Not very, but I had terrible acid burn and I just could not sleep. I couldn't lie or sit, so I had to stand if I wanted to be anywhere near comfortable. Now, it's not your sympathy that I am after - I am male and we do suffer (ROFL) - but what do you do when you cannot sleep. Watch the TV, come on the computer, wake up the family so that they can share in your discomfort too?

Hi P1kef1sh, Firstly, I am sorry you had such a restless night and hope even though tired you are better today. Gaviscon will help if not. If I can't sleep I tend to read a book for a while and then when my eyes get tired I usually find I can get off then, if not because of pain etc I will come downstairs and ge a drink and maybe sit up for a while at the computer of watch TV. Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight. Ellie :D

Thank you Ellie. I took some Bisodol and that eventually calmed things down. I finally got off about six and was awake and up just after eight! I may have nap this afternoon. I usually come on the computer, but I had done quite a lot of that last evening so I wanted a rest. In the end I leant against the bannister rail and thought up discussions. None of which I can remember now!

Oh I think up all sorts of wonderful discussions before going to sleep at night only to forget them all by the morning. I really should go to bed armed with pen and paper but how sad is that LOL. Ellie :D

If I can't sleep at night I opened my computer and watch music videos until my eyes drop off. Sometimes i read hardbound book just to make me sleepy.

The Boss is a great re-arranger of furniture Gabs. If she is home alone for the day I will often get back and think that maybe I have walked into some else's house! However, this time I just stood, or rather leaned silently and thought up discussion ideas. I still feel a little queasy, but I will survive. Thank you. X

Oh Pike ..if only I had known.my nurses uniform came from Ebay yesterday, the complete works..a litttle pinny a hat ith a cross on and some seamed stockings.and I would have gladly dooned them to give you a Rennie..but..was this heartburn a case of self indulgence?did you pig out on goodies during the evening?..if I cant sleep I get up,its as simple as that..often Mr Ruby will still be up watching something or other on the television,we keep very erratic hours here!but I cant just lay there ,my molehills become mountains, and before I know it im on the ascent of Everest..so rather thango through the whole agony syndrome I just get up,maybe sew or put the computer on,or maybe just relax with the television on low..

Now I am trying to stay calm here Ruby. But the vision that is you in your nurses outfit is very troublesome. If I pop back to bed will it be time for my bed bath?!! I do watch TV sometimes, but I didn't want to come on here last night. I actually spent some time leaning over the bannister rail dreaming up discussion topics that I have now forgotten! Now, I've got a bowl of warm water......

Hopefully you aren't allergic to me and we can do that again! Hope you are feeling better today and have some sweet dreams!

I listen to my radio all night - there are quizzes, talkbacks, insomniac nutters ... there's a whole new world howling out there in the early hours! (I don't mind if you watch the telly ... but the second thing you mention is VERY unseemly!)

LOL. I had to go back and read what I had written. Things are bad, but not that bad. I only do that to order! There is another life out there in radio land. I don't listen so much now since I stopped driving like a mad thing all over the country in an attempt to make a living. Last night I did none of those things however. I simply leaned over the bannister rail and dreamed up discussion topics. None of which I can remember now.

Well my sympathy you shall get whether you want it or not Sir Fishy simply because being one who is a sufferer of Acid Reflux (take meds for it) AND a chronic insomniac (more meds thank you) I feel your pain... Whenever I cant or just dont sleep I usually get up and move around quietly or watch tv...I never, however wake anyone else up becuase #1 thats just mean and as much of a cranky b!tch as I am i cant be that mean to my family..though its been tempting at times in the past and #2 i'm usually SO flustered I dont want to be around anyone anyway..

That's all so familiar Raven. The Boss did get up and made me a cup of tea bless her, but was snoring, I mean sleeping, soundly very soon afterwards. I do watch TV sometimes, in fact I probably see more TV then than normal. I worked out a whilse ago that other than News, I watch no more than two hours TV in an average week. It's all banal or cr*p. I'd sooner be on here. Thank you for the sympathy. I accept it very happily.

Well, I suppose that depends on how sick I am. If I'm up with the dry heaves (because I never throw up) I'm not going to run to the computer, I'm going to lay on the couch and moan. If its just because I have insomnia, yes I'll play on the computer and if its something really serious then I would probably wake someone up to be with me. Nice robe you are wearing this morning. LOL.

Sorry to hear about your acid burn. I take Zantac for that...takes care of it real fast. If I find myself not being able to sleep, I pick up a good book. If that doesn't work I take a sleeping pill. No staying up all night for me. LOL

I didn't think of taking a sleeping pill. Not that I have any. But it's not such a bad idea. Maybe I shall get some herbal ones. That said, I just couldn't get comfortable lying down. Maybe a sledgehammer to the head would have done the trick!!

Whenever I can't sleep, I'll get out of bed. Then I either get on the computer or read a boring book. Hopefully, I'll get sleepy enough that I can get to sleep. I hate it when I cant' get to sleep because when I don't get enough sleep, I get really irritable and cranky. You would not want to be around me when I'm that way.

Hi ya p1kef1sh Ok I know I am being a bit slow (it's the Cornish in me I'm afraid) but what does ROFL mean?. I don't usually have a problem with sleep as my young kids run me ragged during the day but if I did I would probably stay in bed but watch a bit of tv!

How did I miss your response Humbug. I am sorry. Luckily for me you are up there in Blackpool wearing your "Kiss me quick hat" and eating your candy floss on the Prom. We don't have a TV in the bedroom but I could come downstairs. Trouble is, once it's on, I'd just sit there staring at it with no idea what the heck is on!

When i can't sleep which is often i just change my activities to wherever i can get comfy if i'm better lying down i'll watch tv with subtitles of, if i'm sitting up i'll come on the computer and come on here, internet, blogging, update my website etc like i did last night if i can't sit on the computer i'll try the couch and read if all else fails i'll just potter about wiping things down doing the dishes, playing with the pets (quietly). i try not to wake my boo up cos it's a regular occurence he';d never sleep plus he's up very early so i make breakfast and stuff for him if i'm up and he wants it.

If anything is wrong with me, I am up at the washroom, get a drink of water and if that does not work, I will go to my medicine cabinet and find something that will help, like an aspirin of tylenol to get at least the pain subsided so that I can get a little sleep. If it is just I cannot sleep, I will close my eyes and hope I will get into slumberland. It usually works.

My problem was that as my pain was in my stomach, I didn't want to upset it further. But with a headache, or general ache, I'd do exactly as you would do.

I don't do any of the three things you mentioned. I find that the TV or computer tend to make me stay up even when I do feel like sleeping. What I do is drink some warm milk, or drink some chamomile. While I drink it, I soak in a warm to hot bath, with very little light in the room, and some gently music in the background. If that doesn't work, I then take some Valerian. It's a herbal sleep remedy that does the trick quite often.

We don't have a bath in our house, just a shower (a very smart one, but it isn't a bath). However, a warm drink and a book sometimes do the trick. I must look into herbal sleep remedies. They sound like they might help.

I used to get those things and they stopped when I discovered what the cause was. Greasy foods or using too much cooking oil did it for me. I cut out most of the greasy foods and use only a little peanut, not vegetable, oil to fry things with. Since then I just don't get haertburn.
