Do You Younger Mylotters Think That Your Over 50 Friends Are Still Cool?

I'm 55 and I have a Birthday coming soon in October... It's both amusing and amazing to me that I'm considered a Senior, and that most youger folks will automatically assume that I'm simply too old to be "cool"! LOL! :) I also find it amazing that I probably am a lot more "cooler" than a whole lotta folks that are much younger than me, too... They probably never had the chance to develop the "Radar" to detect and avoid the "un-cool" stuff, and spent HUGE amounts of time and energy on NOT having fun! :) I really go all out when it comes to being creatively "cool", but I never really have to actually THINK about it,it seems... This question came about as a result of a compliment from one of my dearest Mylot friends, who happens to be 18 years old... I will be smiling all day about this one! :) Here are five things about me, and you may say what you think about them in your responses below: Is It Cool Or Not Cool That... 1. I Celebrate my Birthday for an entire Month? :) 2. That I am a guy who loves to cook? 3. That I like super fast sports cars, but I will not own one until they can be made not to harm the Earth? 4. That I love any color of excellent and fashionable clothing and shoes, as long as it's black? LOL! :) 5. I openly welcome loving people of all races, creeds, languages and countries in my Life, because that's the way I am and always have been? So there you have a few facts about me... What are a few things about your older friends, or even yourself, that you think are "cool"?

Ooh, I'm an under-eighteen here who's gonna respond! 1. Very cool. We sorta celebrate my mother's birthday all month, 'cause that's the only way I can afford to shower her with presents =) 2. Definitely awesome. Not that many people have the mad cooking skillz let alone the guys (young or senior) =) 3. This one's sweet-cool. 4. Haha! 5. And this, is what I hope the younger generation takes up. What I like about alot of the older people I know, is how wise they all are. Not everyone's fortunate enough to know people who're in their senior years who fit the "Wise Sensei" role. And I count myself lucky to know them, even though I oftentimes act more like the mentor than they do ^_^' Hm. Cool about me? I think you've inspired me to make a list! (1. I'm not even in college yet and I'm active in politics and activism, and I'm obsessed with the news...much to my own parents' chagrin. (2. I love technology but actually am not a tech-addict, since the only tech I get is what I need...and the only technology I really love is the newer more efficient, and in extension environmentally friendly tech. (3. I am a hermit! Mwuahahah. That is...I don't care that I have no definable social life and like to live alone. No angsting over who hates or likes me, I just bypass it altogether. (4. I volunteer for the Salvation Army every year. I'm one of those folks you see sitting out in the cold, ringing bells for you to donate money for the needy -- of whom I've been counted as one as a child, and even though I'm not that much better off now, am trying to help as many as I can. (5. Had I been able to afford it financially, I would've graduated highschool at age 15. (This is possible because I'm homeschooled and dedicated to my education) (6. I can hold my own in a conversation with people much older than me on stuff they do for a living, went to college and got a degree in...even though I'm just a kid. I'm actually pretty proud of all this. I think it's cool. Most kids my age think I'm crazy, but just goes to show -- weird and crazy = cool!

You are really cool! I am pleased to say that your parents, friends and teachers should all be very proud to have you in their Lives... You are very spirited and accomplished for your age, and I sense that your Solitary Nature indicates that you have a brilliant and disciplined mind... In other words, you rock! I am very pleased to introduce you to some free courseware from MIT, you can choose from 1800 courses from one of the best colleges in the country, or take them all, and it won't cost you a dime... Then when you are ready for school... :) http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/home/home/index.htm Is this cool or what?

Hey there peaceful! Well of course I always think you're cool! Next month I celebrate 49 yrs so I'm not far behind you. I think we can be cool as long as we want to be cool. It's a state of mind. But things are a little different today than say 30 yrs ago. Our parents formative years were in the 40's & 50's. Though things were beginning to change as a result of WW2, life in general, and the expected roles in life were still well defined. Our formative years were in the 60's & 70's which was a time of the greatest upheavals of societal norms since the Roman Empire. It was also the beginnings of the Spage Age which, after Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969 (which I remember like it was yesterday!), snowballed very quickly into the beginnings of our current Digital Age. We either adjusted and went along for the ride or got left behind. Those of us who went along for the ride are the ones who seem to stay cool! We like all the new "stuff" so we keep in touch with all things new and fresh. I have some friends who are my age who seem very much older than me because they got left behind and therefore think with an older frame of mind. They honestly believe that all the new techologies are for "the kids". I have quite a few friends who actually see no benefit or reason to having a cell phone or computer. *GASP* I think it's very cool that I can get up on stage with my band and my audience sees me as cool tattooed rock & roll singer instead of as a woman who is older than most of their mothers. I get 25 yr old guys flirting with me all the time and frankly I love it! As far as your list goes, #1 - Check! I've been doing that since I turned 21! My best friend's birthday is on the 1st day of Sept and mine is the last day of Sept so we celebrate for the whole month. #2 - Well I'm not a guy but I love to cook! LOL. #3 - Motorcycles & fast cars, I'm in paradise. But I am all for alternative fuels and extremely eco-minded. I'm a Pantheist so it goes with the territory.. LOL. #4 - Ditto, 90% of my wardrobe is black, stage clothes are usually studded or sequined. #5 - again ditto, I've always been that way too. The more I know about you peaceful, the more cool I think you are!

I am pleased as punch to know you, Crafty! :) We have so much in common that it's truly uncanny... From Music all the way to the Kitchen, and closets that look like Batman exploded in them, I'd say that we would be able to finish each other's sentences within 10 minutes after we meet in person! :)

One of my best friends is over 50. Age is just a number. I hope no one would want to limit friendship with me because of that. My hubby is a guy that likes to cook. As a matter of fact, he made oatmeal cookies tonight that were yummy. One day he too will be 50 and over. The coolest thing about my older friend to me, is that he has become family. There would be a hole that couldn't be filled in our family without him.

I am glad to hear from you, Mommy! :) The Ladies in my Life always adored the fact that I can cook, and I really enjoy putting on a show for them! :) I'm glad that you appreciate the older folks that grace your Life, you can be sure that they really enjoy being accepted as family members... Speaking of family, I understand that you are gonna add to yours very soon, so here's a few recipes for you and hubby to try! :) http://www.epicurious.com/tools/searchresults?search=healthy+dinner+meals+for+a+pregnant+women

My parents are in their 50's and they don't look it or act it. It's weird even thinking of them as senior citezens. I think sometimes they even forget that they are senior citezens. I have to remind my mother about the great discounts she gets now because of her age. I'm 35 and I still get carded and 19 and 20 year olds think I'm their age until they hear my daughter who looks just like me and will be 17 this year call me "Momma". So I guess I get it from my momma. I still feel like I'm in my 20's. But to answer your question, 50 is the new 30, and you are at an age where you accept yourself for who you are, so yes I think you are cool.

I just had to do some calculations and it seems that there is about 12 years difference in our ages. Now, whether that makes me 43 or 67 is open to debate ... I certainly don't feel more than 18 at times. 1) I debate whether I celebrate my birthday at all or for a whole year 2) My main passion is cooking (and I am a guy, too). My latest experiment was gram flour pancakes (more or less a flat onion bhaji) wrapped around chicken and asparagus. Voted a keeper by erindoors. 3) You should look at "The sports car that runs for a year on one tank of petrol" ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/geneva_motor_show/article3492522.ece actually there are a number of them, including one made in Norfolk that claims 2000 miles per tank of bio-diesel (and looks very smart). 4) You are a Goth? Good for you! I like a little colour in my life, I have to say. 5) I have always felt that my reserve was something that was passed on to me by my parents and was, perhaps, something I should deal with. I have no doubt that you would find me warm and friendly because I love meeting people. Whether or not I really 'open' to them, though, is always something that has to be tested and proved by meeting. Different cultures always intrigue me but a closed mind is generally irritating ... unless I feel that that person is from the same 'pool' and therefore to be cherished. I have to say that your fifth point is the one I had most difficulty aligning myself with ... even though I have no problem with race, creed, language or culture as a rule. There would be very few people I'd call 'uncool' (I can't think of one, actually!) and probably an equal number of people I would unhesitatingly call 'cool', though I'd say that anyone who isn't 'uncool' has to be 'cool'. Of all my friends, I would say that the ones who completely ignore age difference are the coolest.

Yes, there are some really Un-Cool people running around and causing all kinds of trouble these days, but that has always been, and probably always will be... The odd thing is that most of them seem to end up in Government! LOL! :) Owlwings, that car looks fantastic, and I thank you for sharing that link with me! :) The fact that you use your decisive Nature to regulate the folks the come into your circle is well understood by me. It's a great skill to have, and pay forward as it will greatly affect a younger person's Life for the Good, especially these days. Looking at the shocking rise of crime in the US and the UK, anyone can see that there is a whole lot of something that is missing out there... I'm going to say that it might be a lack of Love and Wisdom, but that's just me... I certainly wish you the very best in all of your endeavours and adventures, and may Blessings abound for your and Yours! :)

Okay, I am not too much younger than you and there is NO way that I think that you are old. In fact, I thought that you were much younger than I was until I just read this discussion. I have also thought that some MyLotters were older than they really were and after checking their profile was absolutely amazed! What is age but a number anyway?Life and how we live it is what really matters, to me anyhow. I will be back in October to wish you (the old geezer..) Happy Birthday! PS..yes, you are cool..so relax, already..lol

well, in my personal opinion I do think that having older friends is cool. i also tend to think that they are cool. They have more life experience than younger friends. Some know that having respect and being kind to other people is a good thing. We can all use nice and kind friends.
