Hurricane Gustav and its effect on US Politics

Okay, a category 3 hurrican is headed to the coast of the USA. This question is being posed before the hurrican hits.... The Reps have scaled back their convention and Pres. Bush is looking "presidential" this time. Question: Do you believe that the political parties will use it to further their goals? Politically, who will come out the winner if this storm does some real damage when it hits land?

No one will come out ahead. Politically or otherwise. At least this time they evacuated the at risk communities.

I certainly hope you are right. This weather just keeps getting worse and worse. I have a daughter that lives in Panama City Beach and we worry about them all the time.

Tallymommy I think you are misinformed. Barak is using his massive fund raising machine to raise money for the Red Cross. He has links on his website and he is sending out requests for donations to everyone who is signed up to his website to donate to the Hurricane cause. Based on his success at raising money at a grassroots level I suspect that he will be quite successful in this endeavor as well.

Yes, I think both parties are working to raise money. I do have a question. Now that the hurricane looks like it won't be as bad as people feared, where will all the money go? Hopefully to a slush fund for future problems.

Eh...if someone tries to use it politically, they'll gonna get their heads bitten off. People're hyper aware when crises hit, so... Whether someone will or won't, I can't say. It depends how stupid they are, in my opinion. But largely methinking nothing will happen politically, and therefore no one will come out on top.

I don't think this is an issue for political gain. Hopefully everyone learned a lot from the situation with Katrina and haven't tempted fate when preparing for the storm. However, at present it looks like the storm is downgrading so hopefully it will be a non issue and people will get to return home and find most things still intact. I am also hoping the rebublican convention will be able to progress this week as well because Sarah Palin has only recently beenn introduced and the American people need to get to know her.

I think you are correct. It looks like all is going to be okay and the convention should probably pick up now. It will be important for people to get a chance to evaluate Palin. I hate to only get a view on a person from the news and pundits who only push their own side of the issues.

From what I am seeing, the convention has been turned in to a call ccenter and relief aid center. Is this politisation? I'm sure people are going top point fingers and scream yes. I don't think so, to me it seems to be people reorganizing priorities and using resources to try and do some good. the candidates are in a no win situation. If they go abut as business as usual, they will be accused of not caring. If they try to help, they will be accused of politisizing the disaster.

Good point but it looks like it will be more of a "non-issue" since the storm isn't getting as large as they feared.
