I was thinking about this matter several days ago and now, I'm posing this question to the mylot community. Do you think you could survive without any money in life? If so, how do you plan to do it? And what are the ways you do to save, either money or resources and energy?

I seriously doubt you could survive for very long without any money. You could increase self-sufficiency by growing your own food and raising your own animals, producing your own power and so on, but getting started in all these requires an initial input of money, skilled people to maintain, who will also cost money if you can't do it yourself, and, depending on what country you live in, healthcare will cost something, possibly a lot of something. In addition, all governments want something off you for the privilege of living there. Even if you have no income, and therefore no income tax, you will still need to pay stuff like National Insurance and Council Tax.

Just as I thought and kept on thinking about. You're so right in indicating that even if one survives or lives without any money, the government will always try to squeeze something out of nothing; and that is taxes in particular, which the people in the government tells us "...that these taxes help us in a lot of ways". That I personally am not so convinced, but this is another issue, of course.

You can avoid property-related taxes by simply not having anywhere to live permanently. This could be by being homeless - not my first choice - or by living in friends houses. The latter is a fairly good way of winding up with no friends, and having regular places to stay can also be considered to be permanent residences by the government.

Honestly, I burst into laughter while I was reading your additional comment. Until now as I write, I am smiling from ear to ear. And personally, I am so shy to hop and stay with my friends' houses for an extended period of time just to avoid taxes imposed on rentals of houses. Thanks again for making me laugh. I really needed that.

If i am living in the city i think i cannot survive without money. But if i am living in a province i think i can survive. It is easy to get and make food in province.

You've got a point there. Life in the province is simpler while city life is more complicated; thus financial resources are much more indispensable in the city. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think anyone truly can. It's not something that can be taken lightly anymore. You need money to live, plain and simple. For the past 10 to 20 years it has become something that has been embedded in us for survival. And the cost of living has gone up dramatically. You just have to find a plan that works for you so you won't get buried.

I can sense that you've got an attitude that should be imitated by others and that is discipline. With all the credit cards and loan facilities available to any person nowadays, it's hard to control oneself on overspending. I do salute you for this.

I would not survive without a job or money. I have to earn money to pay for the flat, all bills and give all necessary stuff to my child and dog. As nobody supports me financially, I can't imagine my world without money. I need to be responsible and earn money to survive. I must be responsible for my daughter. In my country we don't get much financial support from the country if we lose a job or have no financial sources. It's really bad. One has to take care of himself or rely on family or friends to survive in case financial problems arise. Nowadays, I think it's impossible to live without money. How? We must pay taxes, pay rent and eat. How to do it all without money? Beg in the street? Be homeless?

As compared with the olden times, money is not a luxury anymore. It is a vital part of every country and economy. It has been used and misused in a lot of ways all over the world. I really can't imagine or think of any country which doesn't utilize money.

I don't believe it could be very possible to survive without money. There are some people who may live off the land and camp in the wilderness. They might have a way of making it but I wouldn't want to do that. In this world it is very important to have a little bit of money. My family is just getting by right now and we do have a little more than the bare essentials, however living without any money at all would be very difficult. We try to save and be conservative regularly especially with electricity and water.

With the times changing and getting tougher than ever, a lot of people are really trying to save as much as they can, either money or resources and energy. I myself am one with you in trying to save; not only for myself but also for my own family, particularly for our daughter. Frankly, I don't plan to boycott or not use money but I am trying to be self-sufficient in one way, and I've started to plant veggies and fruits in cans and pots. It's impossible in our area to plant these directly to the soil so I've resorted to this option.

I guess for you cannot easily survive without money because the competition is tough.Well if you will live in rural area then yes you will but you still need a little money for food and stuffs that you need.We people work because of money so that we are able to eat, have a shelter and some extra things that we need in our life.Just imagine if you don't have a single cents.Well yeah you will survive but in hard way.GOd bless and have a nice day.:-0

Gone are the days when our forefathers used the barter trade system in order to sell their products which are usually abundant to them and buy some merchandise which they really need for survival. I do agree with you, insulin. Life is simpler in rural areas and they need lesser than people living in urban communities.

Thanks for your reply, kaguvkov; but I sincerely feel that you have interchanged these two areas; rural and urban. If I'm not mistaken, rural refers to provinces and places in the outskirts of the city while urban includes the metropolis.

In rural areas the COLA or the cost of living allowance is much more greater compare to urban area. So if you are living in the Rural you need to think about your day to day basis about your food and everything so definitely you will not survive. In urban areas there are many resources like you can plant anything for your consumption and there are higher percentage of survival even without money.

I'd say that the situation in your area is quite similar here in our country. Cost of living in the metropolitan area and in various cities locally is more expensive than in the suburbs and provinces. Apartments and condos for rent are prevalent here in the city as purchasing it, either in cash or installment basis, is quite heavy on the pocket. Oh and before I forget, congratulations on the recently concluded 2008 Beijing Olympics.

It depends on the place where you gonna' live. If you will live in the metropolis, for sure.. you will starv... bt if you will live in the countryside, there are lots of resources for a living.

This is so true and so much applicable here in our country. Other people would even decide to relocate their lives to the suburbs because of the high cost of living here in the metropolitan area. Anyway, I'm not sure if you are also in the same country as me; but I suspect that you do. Sorry, but I didn't bother to check on your profile.

No, as of todays world money talks a lot and without money a single person could not survive. The important question there if you don't have enough money is where you will get the resources for your survival? Nothing!

I think this is one of the reasons why some people become beggars. They simply don't have anything - clothes, food, and home. Thanks for sharing.

unfortunately, in this day and age, in western society, i think its extremely difficult (not impossible) to survive without money. If you were to go to a remote culture and live off the land then yes, its possible. Its one of the hardest questions - personally i don't like the concept of money - i like earning things through respect rather than an arbitrary object like money, but i guess im just old fashioned.

If this will serve as a consolation to you, you need not be worried that you're 'old fashioned', because I admit that I am quite old fashioned, too. Others would call or associate this with being idealistic but I personally don't mind at all. I think it's true that an individual can live without any money in a place with remote culture, just like in the olden times experienced by our great great grandfathers.

Absolutely not, I couldn't survive without money! Specially nowadays, it seems like money is the answer to most problems and needs in this world. I am not motivated with money but I just dont know how to survive without money. I would rather owe some money than living without it. Yes money is not everything, there are lots of things that are needful to survive but money seems the top of it in order to survive! Specially the world is in financial crisis now!

I couldn't agree more. Everyone, without exception, has to use money in one way or another. He or she could try to be self-sufficient through growing or planting veggies and fruits but in the long run, he or she has to pay or purchase something which he or she couldn't possibly produce.

Hi there, I don't exactly know what exactly you mean "without money" but i can make you sure that as long as you are in good health there is nothing wrong in it.Years ago i just simply lived with 30 USD per day. I had to work hard each day seven days a week and the outcome of this job was simply around 30 dollars. everything was encluded there.I had to travel by bus every morning 9km then walk two km and when i got to work almost noone of those living close had come yet. I was the first to be there and when all the other members came then the work began. I worked eight to ten hours a day and then travelling back and forth about two hours as the buses were so old and other trobles on the way as well. I was married but my wife was a student and she had was helped by her own family although I had certain expenses going and visiting her every week end.She was 40km away from home.It cost me about six dollars every month.then let's not forget to add here 2-to 3 dollars every month for my bus monthly ticket and roughly 20 dollars to go on living for the rest of the month...Sure I could not sure myself up in the town so much not only because I was mainly away the whole day but secondly if you were out you had to spend certain money with certain people.I usually had my breakfast with me while for lunch I went to a small canteen (a place to eat cheap )and like this about 7-8 dollars more were left on it and as you can see or emagine or never imagine someone can possibly live but surely not every where .... ! Actually your subject is wakening me of such times... so I better go... Wish you never taste that way...

Much has really changed with all the amenities and improvements here and there. However, not all of the changes are positive. As I view it, almost everyone is so busy nowadays that we do forget the real importance or reason of all our efforts. Thanks for giving me a glimpse of your life then and for your reply. God bless.

I think you'd need to have some sort of money supply, even a small one. You could do things such as hunt or grow your own food to eat but eventually, you would probably run out of things to use for growing or hunting and would need to buy some more supplies. Of course, if you could grow your own food, you could grow more than you needed and sell it for money. Of course, you could also do odd jobs for cash too. Those odd jobs wouldn't bring you a lot of money but if you could grow or hunt for your own food, you wouldn't need a lot. Of course there is the matter of having a place to stay. I don't know any places that are rent free. If you could find a place to pop a tent that had a pretty mild climate you'd probably make it ok. If you had access to water so you could wash your clothing and hang it to dry, you also would not need to spend anything. I think if you really tried to plan it, you could get by on having very little money but you would need a small supply of it especially in the beginning for some supplies.

Yeah, I do agree with you. I really think it would be a lot difficult without any money; it may be doable but it is harder to make the initial adjustments from living a city life full of amenities to becoming a 'man in an island'.

Hello friend. I won't be able to live on without having any money with me. This is a very realistic society. Without money, you cannot move anywhere. It is a harsh society and we have to make our earnings by working hard using our mental and physical labor. Some kind of surviving skill of making money is greatly needed to make life live on.

Even I don't think I will survive in the city without any money; but if I have to live in the mountains or an undeveloped island (SURVIVOR reality show), I guess I have to learn how to do it. Inspite of having cash, I believe it will be of no use to anyone in the place. Thanks for responding. Regards, friend.

I don't think that anyone can survive without money, unless you have someone supporting you. You have to have money for absolutely everything. I try to cut back on our bills mainly electricity. I don't see us saving any money on groceries. That's something we won't cut corners on, but it would be nice to save on them. I've been savig a lot of money lately, and that's mainly because I haven't been spending as much.

The answer would be obviously no buddy. Unless someone is ready to sponsor you or something like that. Now days almost everything you need for a living requires money. That's the reason people are working to earn a living. Yo save money people deposit their money in a bank where they could earn interest on that money. As far a resources and energy is concerned I switch of the lights fans etc in the room I'm not sitting in so that electricity is saved.

Well it's good to know that like me, you are also conserving energy and resources. I believe that this is beneficial not only for us, but it is helpful for the environment. Thanks.
