Is it cheaper to make your own soap? It seems like it can cost more to make sopa just from the cost of supplys. Lye is costly and hard to find. You can get a good amount of regular soap for the same cost. But how many bars will a thing of lye make and what are the other costs involved?

In the old days what was lye made from? Basically it's derived from ashes, soggy ashes. It's a very corrosive substance WET ashes, it can damage your hands so it's best to be careful. Here's an article that talks about making one's own soap: http://www.pureandnaturalsoaps.com/homemade-lye-soap.html And about old fashioned soap specifically: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-lye-soap.htm It is expensive to do things the modern way, slightly less so to just buy the soap yourself. But it costs you nothing to put your left overs to good use. I know all this, because I lived on a farm for most of my life, and Mom did occasionally make her own soap. I personally have never tried making it, but I might put it on my to-do list, along with tea-making and micro-farming =) How much you make depends on what recipe you're following, of course. And the ingredients aren't hard to find if you make them yourself, because they're pretty standard things.

I have thought about making all the ingredients for my self. I do want to try a batch to learn the process of how to make it once I have everything. I think I will be trying a batch sometime next week. From that I can tell if it is something I want to do all the time.

Well, remember to be careful -- making soap can make for some disasters. As my Mom says, lye's almost like acid so it takes some healthy respect. I'm sure you'll do awesomely, though. I hope your soaps turn out lovely!

Thank you. I am going to try it as soon as my son comes home from school and can help me with my daughter today. I will let you know how it goes.
