Here is an article from www.ninemsn.com.au This year 5 kid made an ati-Obama shirt to wear to school on a day where the kids were supposed to wear red white and blue to show their patriotism. I can't believe this kid is only about 11! When I was that age I was still playing with Barbie dolls. Do you think that Daxx should have been allowed to exercise his freedom of speech? Also, do you think a child that young should know all about the more sinister side of politics? I've included a picture of his shirt. Here's the article: Daxx Dalton, a Year Five student at Aurora Elementary School in Colorado, wore the shirt to school on a day where students were asked to wear something red, white and blue to show their patriotism for the United States, Fox 31 News reports. The school gave Dalton an ultimatum — turn the shirt inside out or he would be suspended. "They're taking away my right of freedom of speech," Dalton told Fox 31. "If I have the right to wear this shirt I'm going to use it — and if the only way to use it is get suspended, then I'm going to get suspended." His father Dann, who describes himself as a "proud conservative", said the school's actions trampled on free speech. "It's the public school system — let's be honest, it's full of liberal loons," Mr Dalton said. "The facts are his rights were violated, period."Aurora Public Schools declined to comment on the case but said it's investigating, while Mr Dalton has indicated his intentions to bring a lawsuit against the school district.

First of all I do not think that this child should have that right to speach which he is demanding. He is too old to understand the meaning of what he is saying. It is an attack on somebody who may become the next president of US. The school's action is perfectly right. They have not taken away the right to speach of one person but they have protected the right of one person not be offended without any logic or without any proof. The father of this child should be held responsible for this type of ideology implantaion in his child's mind. If the father is proud conservative that does not mean that the child should be so. At this age the child is to young to understand what he realy means when he says something like this. Just ask him why he thinks that way....? He will say that because his father thinks in that way....Does it make any sense?

My children watched the news all the time when they were growing up! They do pay attention to a great deal of what is said. I dont think that the father should have forced the child to wear that shirt but I think children have rights too! Its important for thier voices to be heard too! Many people have bumper stickers and signs in their yards and clothes that support or denounce a canidate. If a child wears a Mcain shirt, will that child be sent home?

I notice on your profile it says you're from India. In that case, you're probably not aware that here in America our children are entitled to the freedom of speech and religion - just like every other American. Furthermore, no one in America has the right to NOT be offended. If such were the case, we could not have the freedom of speech, as everyone would end up being offended by what someone else says. We are allowed to be critical of our leaders no matter what our age. It is quite obvious that the child's ideology mimics his fathers, as is the case with many children that age. Just because he may not completely understand what he's saying, however, does not mean he shouldn't have the right to say it.

When we say right to the children, these rights are the right to choose their dish, right to choose their subject of study etc. Right of one person becomes duty for someone else. Without duty the right is useless. Here the child may not have really understood what he really wanted to convey. The writting on the shirt is just a design for him. He may not be knowing that he was involving himself in the defamation of someone. He may not be aware of his duty not to do so.

Why do you think that its about racism? It could just be because they want Mcain for president. Was anything said that was about race? He shouldnt have asked the child to wear the shirt but he shouldnt try to stop him from wearing it either. The child will say why dont I have any rights? You are telling that child that he can think whatever but has no right to express any views?

I'm not really sure about anyone these days. It is so hard to tell who can be trusted and who can't. I think alot of people have things hidden in their closet and in the political field, everything comes out in the wash.

THat's insane. They shouldn't have punished the boy for expressing his thoughts and views which are guaranteed in the constitution. That's just ridiculous. I don't see why they wouldn't do something so unethical!

First of all I do not think that the tee shirt was the child's idea. I have never met an 11 year old with an interest in politics. I suspect it was his father's idea and that he was using the child to push his own political agenda but I could be wrong. Secondly while I support free speech I do not think abusive comments are covered under free speech and I believe that comments on the t shirt were abusive. In this case the child was asked to come to school wearing three colors to show patriotism. I am not sure that an abusive t shirt is very patriotic. If it was then everyone should be allowed to run around abusing people and getting away with it. This is a difficult issue. Yes everyone has a right to free speech but there must be limits or their would be no libel laws as anyone accused of libel could claim free speech and so say anything they want against anyone. The father is clearly extremely conservative since he referred to liberals as loons. To me that means that he is not respecting other people's right to be different.

First of all, what is said on that shirt is totally inappropriate and has no merit. second of all, while it can be argued that his "freedom of speech" is being taken away, school has set rules for the students that they must abide by. It is never allowed for students to wear offensive language of any kind or anything that might be offensive to certain people b/c this has the potential of creating conflict between students, causing fights, and distracting away from what kids are at school to do---LEARN! i think they were completely correct in requiring this student to turn his inside out or be suspended. AND, i think that his parents are disgraceful for alllowing him to wear that and possibly even putting him up to it. (most kids that age do not have such strong political views....) bleh... incidents like this make me ashamed of some americans.

I am a crazy conservative as well. But I agree with the school. I think whatever side of politics it falls on, it was destructive and distracting. So no matter what the shirt said, I would feel this way.

Well it is Red, White and Blue. Children are allowed to wear all manner of filth on their t-shirts in schools these days. Just because someone disagrees with it doesn't make it any worse than any of the others that is worn everyday. I myself would LOVE to see all schools in uniforms! And no i don't need to hear how wrong that opinion is, it is simply MY opinion and because i live in a country with freedom of speech i can express it!

Hi coffeeshot, Its the parents who are making theirs kids wear their t-shirts like that because what do the dids know about poltics? and I don't think schools should be taught about politics at that age, scolls should be teaching proper lessons any way, I don't what is happening in scholls these day and age and Mr. Dalton shoulld go a have a run and jump over the iron bridge.
