Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has invite Senator Obama and McCain to meet with him, in front of the press, while he visits New York for a General Assembly of the United Nations. Full story http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/09/23/ahmadinejad.us/index.html What do you make of this? Would you like to see one or both of our candidates meet with President Ahmadinejad publicly to discuss national security issues? Or do you think it would be a bad idea? Why or why not?

I just can't work out if President Ahmadinejad is completely insane or a genius. Some days I'm convinced he's a lone nutter who lacks the support of any other major political player in Iran and wields no real power; hence the inflamist rhetoric (it's local attention seeking, aimed in fact not at 'the West', but Iran's own people). Other days, he comes out with these gems of stunts and international showboating. An enigma he is.

I think this is Ahmadinejad playing to the gallery myself. I doubt that the offer of talks is really serious. Before there any meeting with Ahmadinejad and the future US president could be even considered, there would need to be some serious talking and compromising by Iran and also the US. I think we are a very long way from that and anyway, with a bit of luck, that nutter will lose the next Presidential elections in Iran, which are scheduled I believe for March 2009 (I think, don't quote me on this) If that is the case, why would any US president want to meet up with him in the first place? I wouldn't and would wait to see if he is defeated and removed from office first.

Very bad idea. The reason he wants to meet them in front of the press is use it as propaganda in his own country. It also makes him look more important to be about to say "look at these pictures, I am soo great that presidential candidates want to meet me". Ahmandinejad has the whole "short man" sydrome going. He is always looking for ways to make himself look important and more of a world player than he really is. Why play into that? Yes talks need to happen ( actually ahmandinejad need a good dressing down in my opinion). But not a media or publicity stunt. What good would it really do? Iran is not going to back down, and the sactions are not working. You can not reason with him. The UN has tried. So why waste the time.

I think this is a good idea. Peace negotiations are better than war.
