Are You Insulted If You Are Called An Atheist When Your Not A Christian?

I am not a christian and for some reason that automatically makes people assume or call me an atheist.. this shouldnt bother me but the fact is im wiccan and so for some one to say that im atheist because i dont believe what they do makes me feel that its either their god or no god.. anyone else feel this way? i have NOTHING against being atheist or believing in any religion at all but it just seems like people love to assume that if you dont agree with them and their religion that that is all there is left to be.. totally basing this on what i have witnessed and been through.. not saying everyone is like that.. thank gods.. So have you seen this MINE or NOTHING type mentality?

I get offended when people call me an atheist and I correct them by saying that I'm NOT an atheist, I am an agnostic. Then they say "What's agnostic?" And some people need to be reminded of what that is several times. Geezzzzzzz. Pick up a dictionary people.

lol i have to admit i have asked what agnostic was before but considering how i was raised i had NEVER heard of it.. but dont worry i looked it up lol.. i get the same thing when there like whats a wiccan? is that a witch? is that a satanist? sigh.. and i guess it doesnt help that a lot of religions have some people just making up what they think that certain religions are so that every one is confused.. but anyways i could really see you getting offended at that.. i think if i were you i would be more offended than me being offended and just being wiccan

I get that some people need to be explained what it means if they never heard it before but man some people ask over and over and over. I can't believe that people ask what a wiccan is. It's amazing to me that some people just go on believing whatever religion that were brought up on and never explore any other ones..at all.

im not sure if it would be better if a person did or did not ask about wiccan though.. if they ask they might be scared but if they dont god only knows what they are picturing!!

I take your point seriously. I am also not a Christian, but I have many beliefs about spirituality. For example, I just returned from the Outer Hebrides, where I visited some of mankind's oldest religious monuments, including the Standing Stones at Calanais. It isn't an exaggeration to say I had religious experiences in these places. I have had similar experiences in great cathedrals, in the abondoned kivas left left by the Anasazi in the American Southwest, and at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. I am drawn to those places where humankind experienced great joy and great suffering. It is their essential humanity that I'm drawn to--and their quest for the divine in all things. This is my true religion. No one has the right to belittle it or me simply because they believe something else.

its annoying.. whats messed up is when they assume its the spell casting crazy witch and avoid you because they think you are waiting to hex them.. funny though.. the total jerks arent worried about us supposively "hexing" them and still are jerks to us.. lol note that "hexing" was used in a joking context and not in a literal for those people that arent sure about wicca.. lol dont need to start ignorance on my own post

Well obviously you believe in something. Wiccans do believe in God they just believe in more than one if I am not mistaken. How can one be an Athiest if they believe there is a God or Gods in this case?

I have seen people who assume that anyone who lends a helping hand is a Christian. I just smiled and told them I was not and they were shocked. That is the most amusing thing I have encountered. Some people don't talk much with people around them that are different, so I guess they just assume things they like to assume such as religion. Not everybody thinks about getting more info, so I don't blame them, they just might not need it. But we as more informative people can just ignore them and keep moving on.... although it does sound amusing when you think of it.

Atheist is people who believe that God (who create this world including you and me) is doesn't exist. I don't know exactly what is wiccan, but if u as a wiccan believe that God is exist i think u're not an atheist.

wiccans believe in many gods which is why i dont see how they classify that as atheist when obviously like you said there is a belief in god(s)

that's funny in an ironic sort of way - would they think Jesus was an Atheist seeing (going by the Bible) he wasn't Christian but Jewish?

I have seen it, and it's totally out of bounds, and ill-mannered for folks to do that... Usually some of these folks make that mistake with me, and I just look them a certain way and they get the picture well enough! Have an excellent day, Moonlit! :) Blessed Be!

I AM a Christian, and I don't believe that my way is the only way. There may be a lot of other ways. I don't like how religions in general seem to think that their way is the only way. Good for you for being what you are, and all the power to you. When I hear christians or anyone else make the assumptions that you mention, I approach them every time, and tell them that there are many pollibilities, and no one should judge.

yeah.. its sad if they really dont feel that there is any other way.. whats really disturbing is when christians are against christians.. ie methodist, baptist, etc etc saying their way is right and the other isnt.. i havent seen it much but i have seen it a couple of times..

Funny as this has never really happened to me, I just wanted to comment if it did I dont think Id really care as it is my life and my beliefs that count. Im a good person all in all and will do for others no matter what religion, race, social standing they are in. I think if more people would practice what they preach we all would be better off. Ohh and for right now Im still trying to find my place in all these religions, I guess it is taking me awhile .. lol

no, because i dont label people atheist just because they are not christian.. i mean, i have muslim friends, buddhists, catholics and christians, we believe in different Gods but it's the same Entity, the same being, just called different names. We should not judge people because of their religion.. if you are a christian, it doesnt make you superior if your friend is not a christian.. i see all religions as equal, nothing more nothing less, we just have to respect each other. and besides if we think bad about people just because they have a different religion, where are the teachings that we have learned from our churches!!!??

I had a girl that I worked with tell me I was a devil worshiper because I said I did not believe in religion. There is a huge difference in being religious and being spiritual. For some, every thing must be cut and dried, black or white, if you believe in God, you are religious, if you are not religious, you worship the devil. My beliefs are what is in my heart, what is right, and what is wrong, my convictions, my relationship with my Creator, all of it is what is inside, not what others tell me it is supposed to be. I am not offended by what others may call me because of my beliefs. I am sorry that they are closed minded and can't see the difference in what I say and what they choose to hear when I say it. I do wish people could actually see past what society has portrayed wiccans to be, and what they actually are, but to some, ignorance is bliss.

I am also Wiccan, and I do get offended when they start playing that "atheist" card. An atheist doesn't believe in any god, and Wiccans do (not the Christian God). So, when they hear the word "Wiccan," they automatically think "Oh, they're going to hell!" Well, what if one doesn't believe in heaven or hell, but believe in a different way of it? So, instead of getting extremely angry about it, I educate them. Then, they do think of what they will say before they just blurt it out.

I have to agree with you. Those people may not have room for others' opinions and don't respect their beliefs. It's sad, but it does happen.

I never assume anyone that is not christian is atheist, and never had anyone did that to me either I was raised Catholic but it's been some time since I actually practice this religion I have decided to take a step away from religion and to accept everyone as they are not their religion I hardly talk about religion or ask anyone's religion anymore and over here I find most people don't care much about religion as much as they care about economy or politics It's kind of strange though if they think you are atheist because you're not christian, because there are other religions aside from christianity, they could've asked you what do you have faith in, rather than assuming you are atheist right away

I don't follow any religion at all...they are ALL man-made. I do think some of the christian values are good but to follow that religion? nope...none of them. I think wiccan is beautiful and I do follow much of it but not as a religion...some of your theories just make sense to me and feel right. I'm a bit of all religions and none of any and that is the way it'll be. I have seen the mentality that you talk about here and I just walk away from it. It doesn't bother me to be called an atheist at all...any truly spiritual person doesn't judge like that. Anyone ridiculing my choice not to adhere to any particular religion only confirms exactly why I DON'T.

yeah why would you want to join something when they behave like that? they dont realize what they are doing portrays an image that not many people want to be with unless they are the type that just has to be accepted into a group and dont care what..
