Who did you name your pet for?

It's a fact that we often choose names for our pets from famous people to movie and TV stars. Looking back on some of the names we chose for pets when my kids were growing up I remember a little dog we named Venus, for the goddess. We also had a German Shepherd dog we called Belvedere, after a character on a TV show. I think the most comical was a little mutt we named after a character from the TV show, That's My Momma, Ray Ellis. One of our Shepherds was named Taurus, for my birth sign, and another was called I Ching, because of his look. Where did you get some ideas for pet names that you have owned?

It took forever to come up with our dogs name, it had to pass at least 3 out of 4 people and there was always one name someone didn't like..My daughter got online and found all these names and made a list for us to look over..We finally came to an agreement, Zoe Roni which means Life Rejoice.

I see you really put a lot of work into coming up with a name for your dog, carmelanirel. I also believe that a pets name should reflect some of its character.

Actually its our feelings. One of my frnd called her pet bush. I asked him why do u call ur pet bush. He ans me he dislike bush. Thats why someone called their pet as their favorite person names and someone called their pet as that person name whose are dislike by them. I dont do it. My pet name is doggy.

I don't think I would want to label a pet with the name of someone I didn't like, mhrmasum, but different strokes for different folks!

Hey, this is a nice topic, kind of different from the routine. My first dog's name is Trixy (after our doggie which we had when I was little). Then we have her son Teddy. I was racking my brains for a good name when he was a pup. He was a cuddly, furry and jet-black. And I just started teasing calling him 'Teddy Bear'. It then struck me, why not? Teddy seems the right name for him. Then we have Gypsy. She came in from the streets, and is like a vagabound. And then Maggie. She keeps wagging and wagging her tail, so we called her Waggie at first, but it didn't seen right, so we just changed it to Maggie. Then we have Whitey, because she is white in colour and Teetoo, just came out in fun. Our cats are Princess, because she looked like one. Then all the other cats names came out in fun like Bulla, Pepsi, Cola, Jaampi, Chikoo and so many others. We also named some mongrels who were in front of our gate and we used to feed them. They were Patchy, Tootsi, Cheechee, Baby, Doggie, Coocoo boy, Girlie, and again so many.

Thank you, that was really nice. Yes I do love animals and little kids, especially ones who have no one to love them.

I named my rough collie for the Lion King character Simba. I guess it was not an original name because I heard lots of other dogs being called with that name.

I've had a lot of kitties in my lifetime, since I've had cats ever since I was five years old. The very first cat we had, my mother got as an early Christmas present for me on Dec. 7, 1962 and she named her Babette..no idea why...LOL. I've had cats named Biddy, Friskey, Snoopy (after the dog in Charlie Brown)....as time went by I went through phases....like my Japanese phase and had a Sachiko, Koniko, and Keiko (the name of the whale in the movie Free Willy). I went through a Native American phase and had cats named Lakota, Dakota, Cheyenne, Tootoosis (after a native american actor). Pato (also named after a native american actor Pato Hoffman) and yes even had a Geronimo and despite his rather "fierce" name was a cuddle bug. I once had a trio named Bibbity, Bobbity, Boo after that song in Cinderella. My one current kitty, Pyewacket...I had remembered that name in the movie Bell, Book and Candle...I've had a number of black cats and never thought to name any as Pyewacket until he came along...and I somehow think he KNOWS he's a "magical" cat....LOL

Somehow I just knew you could be quite creative when it comes to naming pets, pyewacket! Those are some great names. With a name like Pyewacket your cat has to be special.

And Pyewacket KNOWS he's special...which is why he likes to hog all my attention. If I talk to my other kitty Kissy, no matter where he is, he has to come running over to me, pushes Kissy aside and demands his attention..LOL

I don't have a pet now. I like dog, and I own dogs when I was young, which my father give them to me, and the name of them is just like which discribe their fur color, lovely. I don't really give them a name which like a human's. And I think it's much different from your country, because our mother language is not english, the word can't be pronouced by english.

Our adult cat was named off of the show Dora the Explorer as this was one of our daughters favorite shows when we got our cat and she ended up being named Tico . The other two kittens we just took in were actaully just names I liked and because the children always name our pets , I decided I would name them this time and named them Shyra and Montanna , so didn't name them after anything , just liked the way the names sounded . Those who know us though did assume that Monatanna was for Hannah Montanna who is one of my daughters favorites singers now but actaully I had not given this any thought at the time but I could have thought of it unintentionlly because I hear the name so often around the house but didn't realize this when I picked the names :)

Cute names, sam! It is true that if we are so accustomed to hearing something it can become embedded into our subconscious.

Our dog Imca is named after the kind of races cars s/o races (IMCA modifieds). The cats were just given names for whatever te looked like or the kids came up with. The more memorable ones are Upside-Down, the little one always manages to get her upside down when he picks her up so it just stuck, and Hoosier, after the tires because he's mostly black whith a little white and a lot of orangish-brown mixed with the black so I said he looks like a dirty tire.

It's funny how we name our pets. I had two dobermans named Redford and Newman. I had a mutt that my daughter (4 years old at the time) named Sprocket, after the dog on Fraggle Rock, she loved that show. My other dogs' names had more to do with their looks or personality, a basset hound named Sassy, a 1/2 basset named Oreo, she was black with a white stripe down her stomach, and a small brown dog named Little Girl, she was the only female in the litter. I had a blue heeler named Freckles, and a golden named Taffy. We now have a Chesapeake Bay retriever named Tinker, not after Tinker Belle, but because my s/o wanted a name that sounded like it would be for a small dog lol. He had a dog, before I knew him, named Jerry Lee. And we had a bassett when I was young named Charlie Brown.

My daughter named our dog as the dog was so small. Tiny is what she came up with for a name. Kinda suitable tho as she fit in your hand when a pup.

Yes it is our privilege to give our pet a name. I usually got the name to give for my pet, according to his color and characteristic My present two dogs name are Blacky and Spotty. Obviously Blacky is a black dog and Spotty has a spotted combination of black and white. But before I had a pet I named after the movie of Chuck Norris, Braddock.. The dog is a medium brown colored and his really that tough and strong. His my most favorite among all my pets but he lost three years ago. One of our neighbor saw that his been kidnap by some strangers.. I never seen him since then..

I was into Greek mythology and found it fascinating so when my ex told me I could name and christen the cats, I immediately chose Zeus and Hera both befitting them and boy did they suit the names too, Zeus was treated like a king and I loved him to bits and Hera was a right madam! Our cat Meg we have at the moment was already called Meg when we got her from the animal rescue centre, so we didn't like to change her name!

I once had a female German Shepherd who looked like a female and resembled a lioness in colour so I called her Sheba. Her mate was a beautiful very male Shepherd so he was called Kaiser. My Lucy was named after an Aussie TV star my ex fancied, he was not impressed, lol. I wanted to name Banjo after an Aussie so I named him after Banjo Patterson, the poet. There are others but there naming was a bit obscure.

I named my first cat after a character of a movie, her name was Gizmo. This was a name of one of creatures in the movie the Gremlins. This was the only time i named a cat of mine after a character of a movie. The names of my other two cats are Nicky and Kathy. I choose those names simply because i liked them. My daughter called her little kitten after a character of Winnie the Pooh, his name is Teigetje(Tigger).
