It annoys me when I am at a restaurant, and starts to butter my bread, and the butter is so cold it will not even spread. I think restaurants should keep some butter out so it can get to room temperature, so that it would be easier for their customers to spread. What do you do when your butter is too cold? I usually will just eat the dry bread with butter.

If this happens to me, i would not hesitate to ask for a softened butter. It is really annoying when they do that. At home there is always soft butter (in it's place in the fridge) so whenever i eat out, i always expect that restaurants should serve them soft as well. What do they expect customers to do? Mash the butter? Blow it? Light it? Hello?

Maybe, there should be a blow torch at each table for the simple purpose of softening the butter

I think this is a universal restaurant experience. And not a pleasant one. I let it sit til it softens. Or I wait to eat the bread. If I have ordered a hot meal my plate usually comes to the table warm. I will set some butter on the plate and it will soften more quickly.

I hate cold butter. I always have a stick of butter in a dish on the counter at home because of it. If I get rock hard butter at a restaurant I normally wait for it to warm up.
