How long does it take for your raw meat to unthaw?

It depends on the temperature in my house and kitchen. If it is cold, it will take longer, but if it is warm, it will unthaw faster. This process when it is cold can take anywhere from 5 hours. When it is very hot or warm it can take about 3 to 4 hours. There have been times that it can take an extra hour or two, depending on how much meat is in the pack. So, how long does it take for your meat to unthaw?

Hi cream97, Iam a health concerned person. I thaw my frozen meat in the fridge. What ever I will be eating next day it will go into the fridge today. That is the proper way to unthaw your frozen food. If I changed my mind and I need a fast thawing I have a metal board that is special for thawing food and 1 pound of poltry (which takes longer than meat) it will be ready in 1 hour and 1/2 approximately. It works perfectly!

Okay darlin here is a health tip for you... You should never ever defrost your meat other than in the refridgerator. Take it out the night before and put it in the fridge. All kinds of bacteria grows in the meat when it is defrosted on your counter. You probally find yourself with an upset stomach all the time. This my friend is food poisoning in lots of cases. Make sure to have a thermometer in your fridge and your fridge should read 42 degrees. Bacteria can not grow in this temp. Good luck !

Thanks for the info. I have heard that many people do this. This process takes very long as it is in the fridge. I will apply this to my cooking tactics.. I have not gotten an upset stomach from defrosting it on the counter. It always defrost in a special kind of pan. The meat is wrapped in plastic and tied up. But, I will change how I do this, as I don't want to risk getting sick..

I thaw mine in the fridge. If you're thawing yours on the kitchen counter, you're taking a big chance of getting food poisoning! I usually take mine out of the freezer the evening before I'm going to use it and it's thawed by the next evening unless it's something like a turkey that takes about 2-3 days. I also use my microwave to thaw meat. I'll put it in at low power for about ten minutes than put it in the fridge for the rest of the time. This cuts down the time it takes to get ready to use.

Well, I guess it depends on how I thaw it out. If I want to use it right away I will set it in warm water in the sink and that usually takes a couple of hours to thaw out. If I don't need to use it right away I'll put it from the freezer to the refrigerater. That usuually takes a longer to thaw out, although, I've never timed it. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Yes, it all depends on when you want to cook the meat. It does take very long to thaw out in the fridge. Thanks for your response!

I hope you are not thawing your raw meat at room temperature. This is known to be a cause of bacterial growth in food. You should only thaw meat in your refrigerator.

I don't put my meat on the counter to thaw. I always thaw my meat in the microwave. It has a setting for thawing meat and I just put in the weight and hit start. I'm not sure how long it takes. It depends on the kind of meat and the weight. But, usually around 7 mins or so.

If i am needing the meat within say 2-3 hours i tend to put it still in the packet into a cold bowl of water as this helps the process quicker.
