Would you consider doing it with strangers

With the financial crisis happening and no one having money these days, would you do exchanges (trading) with strangers for things that you need? I've seen, read, answered a few posts about ways to save money lately and some people talk about doing book exchanges, clothing exchanges, etc with friends. What if you don't have friends with the same interests? would you do exchanges or donate to strangers, say people here on mylot? say I have a daughter in size 3t clothing and can't afford to buy her new clothes and you have 3t clothes stored away somewhere with no use for them, would you donate them to me or exchange them for something that I may have that you need?

Yeah, I've done that a few times as well. Usually, it's much easier if you can look for a social group with the same interest. Like computer parts for example. There are quite a number of computer sites which has forums and you can talk with the other members for trading PC parts. I really wouldn't mind if I haven't met the person before I just take extra precaution on the items though as there are still quite a lot of scammers out there. Take care.

Yeah, it's always been a very big issue that cannot be easily addressed. Scamming is very rampant especially when it involves money. Some sites do have good reputation and its members are mostly honest to goodness enthusiasts. Aside from having goods being traded, you'd gain friends with common interests. Then, it suddenly becomes a community.

That's a great idea, I never thought of looking for forums to start this. you're unfortunately right about the scammers. I wish that wasn't an issue because everyone could benefit from it if we were all honest.

Camo, I will wait for the Apocalypse first, and after it hits strong and the world's economies are in ruin, I will then start to barter with other people, as seen in Mad Max and other postapocalyptic movies :D Peace :)

Your discussion title threw me for a loop for a second. As far as trading with strangers I do not see a problem with it. Craigs list has a trade and barter section that my sister uses sometimes. They also have a free and wanted section.

I'm not sure if someone has mentioned this yet, but there is a site called Freecycle.org. They're all over the country and even in some other areas. You can sign up for the group and ask people in your own community if they have clothes your daughter's size, then you can pick up locally. Exchanging with people over a site like Mylot would actually be rather expensive, since you have to pay for shipping.

I've never heard of freecycle but I will look into it. Thanks. I never thought about the shipping if it were done between mylotters.

I probably would. Especially if they have all their paper work and things are in order. I would enjoy a good barter. Sure!

Any ideas on how to get something like this started?

Ok..so I almost didn't respond to this discussion cuz of the tittle.. LOL But I've heard about people doing exchanges like this..Mostly with babyclothes and things like that but It really does sound like a good idea. I would do it if I was in need of this type of thing. Its just a way to help out others and at the same time helping yourself.
