Sleep Deprivation May Cause Obesity

I remember reading in the news that people who sleep for at least 4-6 has a tendency of being obese. On the other hand, obese people who sleep more has a good chance to lose even if they just sleep at least 30 minutes more. For example if they are already sleeping 7 hours a day, sleeping 30 minutes more may actually reduce to desire to eat. People who sleep 5 hours a night has 73% percent chance of being obese. If you want to read more, check out this link: http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20041116/sleep-more-to-fight-obesity. Just to mention a few other information mentioned in that site, it said that the hormone called "leptin" which is associated with appetite control and "ghelin" is the one associated with appetite stimulant. During sleep deprivation, leptin levels fall and ghelin levels rise. Have you guys noticed that you eat more, whenever you don't have enough sleep? That's what happens to me sometimes. I tend to eat more but of course I still try to control myself so that I won't get fat.

I have three conditions which affect my sleep patterns, and suffer from chromic sleep deprivation. I have cut my food as much as is possible, but two of those conditions also make exercise very problematical. Result - obesity, and Type 2 diabetes just to sweeten the pot. I would kill for a good night's sleep, and if that helped me lose weight, all the better. Lash

That sounds sad. . That means you can't just eat what you want right? Well you have to be extra careful now. Diabetes is no joke. My dad has it too and he has to cut down the carbohydrates. Thank you for the response!

According to the search I just did, it could also cause overweight but that would be inconsistent with the research I did for sleep deprivation lol. It might cause high blood pressure I believe.

I don't get enough sleep and I'm underweight! Then again, I get at least from 12 midnight to 6:30, so I get at least 6 and a half hours a night, which isn't really too bad. I think that when I sleep more, and wake up say, noon, I don't eat much, but that's because I would have missed breakfast.

Yeah I do have a friend of mine who's like that. She simply has no appetite for eating I don't know why and since we have the same job we both don't get enough sleep. You're right though 6 hours of sleep should be just fine. Maybe you''re really not the type the type who eat a lot. Please do correct me if I'm wrong though.

Wow I guess that is something new to me. So maybe that is the reason to those that work at night. They tend to become overweight since sleeping in the morning is just not enough for them to have a very decent sleep when it is morning than compared to those that sleeps regularly at night. What I used to believe is that sleeping right after eating can also cause us to be fatter since you are not using what you are eating when you sleep.

Well, now that explains it. Of course, I wouldn't consider myself obese, but I don't sleep normal hours anymore. And maybe that is why I am having to try to workout and lose some weight. I appreciate the information. Because I had no idea. I am going to work on getting more sleep in addition to my exercise regime. I hope this helps. It seems like every other night I sleep less than 6 hours I am sure. And there are even some nights that I only sleep 3 or 4. Now, I wonder what one can do to help themselves stay asleep longer. I stay in bed when I wake up so early. But I can never seem to go back to sleep. So after about an hour and a half of being awake I will finally get up and go to work. Thanks for the information. This has been really helpful. And it explains how my boyfriend stays so slender since he usually sleeps over 8 hours no matter what! Have a great evening!

Even if you just add 30 minutes to your sleep time it actually helps. I'm glad I was able to help out a little bit. Thanks for the response!
