That's me finished then.....

I read an article in a British newspaper today that suggests that within a decade UK society will be feminised as each year a higher percentage of women enter professions that men have historically had a majority in. Medicine, Law, Accountancy, even the clergy! In 10 years time I shall be 60. I've already fulfilled my biological purpose - I fathered a girl! So what should I do. Is there a nice place that I can quietly be put out of my misery (not that I regard being surrounded by women as miserable. Far from it). But what exactly is my purpose going to be?

Well, I think it's great that women are dreaming bigger and going after jobs while there may still be discrimination. More power to them! I think everyone should have an equal chance at absolutely everything.

My comment isn't about women but what use will men, me specifically, be in the brave new world Sheepie. In fact I agree with you 100%. I'm all for women doing and achieving more in the work place. Leave us men to do what we do best - can't quite remember what that is just now! LOL.

Frankly this confuses me!! Five years ago, I asked my then boyfriend: "I would love to stay at home, keep house, and have kids. Would you support me financially?" He was furious! Frankly, I was shocked at his anger at me even daring to suggest that he financially support me. And there are many men like that. In fact, most men don't want to support wives/girlfriends/kids financially any more. So what should I and women like me do? Starve just because men are being ousted out of professions? I am not a feminist, but this is hard core reality. Now for the second point I wish to make. I don't think all professions will be 100 percent feminised in ten years. This is because both men and women need to eat, and both men and women need jobs. Another hard core reality! Unless the homes are getting masculinized (I don't think they are), offices and professions won't get feminized. Maybe a mixture of both genders maybe. Not entirely female or male. You oughta take these newspaper reports with a few pinches of salt!! LOL!! Cheers and happy mylotting!!

To answer your question, why I did not give the ex BF option of staying at home. Well, there are many reasons. First, he did not like staying at home. In fact, he hated staying at home. Home bored him. Second, the home interest was mine. The idea was this: I would stay at home, earn a possible income from home by my writing activities and so on, have kids, and keep home. All he had to do was to go for work, and do nothing at home. It was simply the way I had worked out the partnership. If it looks too traditional, it is not my fault. My ex BF couldn't possibly do the above. He does not know the rudiments of cleaning. He cannot cook, not even a cup of tea. He definitely cannot give birth to kids, and he would have turned the home into a pigsty in no time. And I certainly wouldn't financially support this pig if it stayed at home, doing nothing. And that's why he is my ex. Either he should be able to do what I do if I managed the finances part. Or he should do the finance part while I did the home part of it. Regarding swapping roles, I have nothing against it. We have no stay at home fathers in India. This is a western development. Men still have to learn all that here. And when they do, I will be an old woman. I sort of suspected you were being too funny here, but what men want is still a confusion to me. Do they want us to work in an office or stay at home so that all the posts are vacant for them? I keep reading all sorts of articles in our local magazines about how men resent the fact that more women are employed nowadays. And LOL don't give a humorous response now. I don't really want an answer. As for my statement about men not wanting to support wives/gfs/kids anymore, I just forgot to add the safe English word "SOME" before men. So re-read it with the word SOME. Cheers and happy mylotting

Are you feminized? I think you are a real darling! Thanks for this lovely discussion. :)

I think that in some ways Indian culture is much better defined than in the West. The male expects to go out to work. The female may, but depending on circumstances may not. That said, I have noticed that within family businesses there everyone has a role. Here it is almost assumed and expected that both will work. Here we've opened so much up that I think that we confuse ourselves. I've noticed a trend in women's magazines recently discussing whether women shouldn't stay at home as an acceptable alternative to going out to work. I worked for 33 years and come from a background that has an expectation that men work, women stay home and look after the children. I was very ill and felt that my only realistic option was to resign. My wife is the breadwinner therefore. I have actually come to like the fact that I am at home. I carry out much of the work that is "traditionally" that of the woman in the house and it doesn't bother me at all. My family have, after quite a difficult adjustment period, accepted our arrangement. I shall look for part time work shortly, but I feel no absolute requirement to do so. Am I feminized? A little perhaps, I am acutely aware of what women do in the home. Is my wife masculinised (if there's such a word), I think not. We're happy with what we've got. I think that men want to care and protect the women in their lives generally, work is just one way of achieving that.

Oh P1key ... there are PLENTY of things for you to do! You can still peel grapes, can't you? And wave a fan? And dance? We need to watch men dance. And you could always father some more girls if you wanted to be hyper-productive. In the meantime, enjoy your women ... at the moment we still tolerate men sharing the planet with us, so make the most of it!

You do realise, don't you, that actually the world has always been run by women. It's only that recently, we have been allowed to be seen doing so! I'm sure we could still find a place for men. Perhaps we shall keep you as pets or to entertain high flying ladies at dinner parties and whathaveyou.

Somebody will still need to be there to listen to all of these women complaining about something p1kef1sh so I wouldn't be too concerned about it. But just to be on the safe side I suggest that you spend the next 10 years watching and re-watching episodes of Oprah as a back up. If all of this fails I understand that Antarctica is one of the better options. I may just see you there myself! We shall see.....

if this is true... well, i'll pack up my tent now and camp in mars. just kidding.=p i'm 20. in a couple of years i will enter the rat race to do something i think as of the moment i will enjoy. i'm really not worried that women will dominate the workforce; i think their dominance is inevitable actually, with all the good work traits they usually have (tidiness, ability to stick to the rules, patience, etc.). and i enjoy their company too. but i don't think that they will completely dominate the workforce either. men will always be integral to any industry, because of their own associated traits (risk-takers, etc.). anyway, that article only reports on a TREND. a trend can change: so many things can happen from now until the end of the decade. so don't worry. i'm sure we will still have our places on this big small world in the future.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
13 Oct 08
Of course you are right Solaris. Men will continue to feature highly in the workplace. The article suggests that there are more women entering the major professions than ever before. I don't think that we will see an end to men, but there may be a more even balance of the genders in certain specialisms. Welcome to myLot.

Wow, now that is interesting. You could always start a only men's club like they used to have a long time ago where woman weren't allowed in..Or go fishing,hunting and camping manly things.Although now days I see woman hunting fishing and camping with the best of them. Or you could sit back enjoy all the attention you will be getting from of the woman.

Hey there. One other thing to do would be - to make sure that your daughter gets a good strong man to her side, to stand tall and proud amidst the whole feminisation issue, emo kids, economical problems and all that :D Besides it can't be that bad, those percentages you see in the newspapers aren't growing in a straight line, they will grow as much as they grow, and then stabilise and society will move on as it always has. Personally I think the future, the next 10 years, will be amazing ones, unlike anything we've ever seen in history, so I'm looking forward to it :)
