I’d been waiting for a real job for me. September 22, 2008, my agent called me that im flying the following day. I was so excited. But by the time I arrived at my work, I was shocked. My expectations all crashed down…. From the time I landed to the airport and met the manager of the institution I’ll be working, I already wanted to go back to my home country. I have a 20kg luggage and 5 kg of hand carry bag. Of course I thought the car is just waiting outside the airport, but you know what, the car was at the parking lot. So we walked and I pulled my luggage.. then we had to ride an escalator cause the car was at the second floor. I was not worried because it’s an escalator, but when im at the front of the escalator, my mouth dropped because the escalator was not moving and it is almost 20 steps up…. I thought the man who fetch me will help me carry my things, but what he did he just said go up and follow me. That was the first time I carried a 20kg on my own. My asthma almost attacked me.. and I was crying while carrying my luggage… im so tired from my travel at that time and then there I was pulling my luggage by myself… Then we traveled again for 30 minutes to go to the place I’ll be working… my agent said that I’ll be working in a 3-4 floor building. And they will deduct my placement fee only… but when I met my employer he said lots of things that I need to pay. In short my agent fooled me… I had no choice but to agree with my employer because my agent can’t do anything with me anymore…. I wanted to buy out my contract but I have some issues to consider first…. But God is really great.. He gives me courage and strength… although im about to give up and be drowned from all my troubles,,, still God lifted me up….

That must be really tough! I couldn't believe the guy for being inconsiderate. He could have helped yo carry your luggage at least. Your situation reminded me of the time i came here in Manila. I carried my luggage from the airport to Alabang. I had to ride lots of jeep to get there. I'm not used to riding jeeps especially when i got a lot to carry. Well i hope you're ok now. Just make yourself busy and keep your mind away from your experiences with your agent and employer. I hope you get back here as soon as you can.

Hi chechuva, that is life dear, sometimes staying in another Country will give us a lot of disappointment and frustrations because we tend to compare about people, our culture and a lot lot more but we have to open our mind that they have different cultures also and been raised differently! ANyway, that is sad about your agent but just pray for it as long as you're in good hands and I know you can just pay it off and start a good income! Take care!

That is so sad to note chechuva! You can always sue that agent of yours at the POEA. Tell your parents or any sister or brother here to file a complaint for you against the agency so that the POEA will send them a letter to explain. Of course it needs a little patience from your family because they will have to go through the pain of going to POEA and then attending the scheduled meetings. Meanwhile, just trust the Lord to give you the needed strength to overcome your predicament. He alone can help you in this time of trial. Keep on praying!

lesson learnt? Never trut an agent totally. Agents are only out to make money. Make your own enquiries and find out the full details. Best of luck.

Last year I edited a HUGE report by a woman in the UN, on the 'plight' of migrant workers. Some of the stuff I read was impossible to believe was happening in today's modern world! If carrying your own luggage and discovering that you have to pay more money for the job than you thought is the worst of your circumstances then you are one of the lucky ones... and there ARE many of those, and from what I gathered the UN is working at making it a win-win situation for ALL of you. And you are right, the best thing you can do is look for the positive aspects of the situation rather than dwelling on the negative ones. Carrying your own luggage is good exercise! You apparently have a computer and can keep in touch with your family and friends... I read stories about people denied that right! And I am quite sure that you will learn from the experience and be stronger for it and more clear about what you want. When is your contract up?
