In cutting costs, would you consider getting rid of the internet?

I was wondering this because of today's economy and almost everyone's need to cut corners these days. I know that, as long as buildings need heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, my husband will need the internet. He designs software programs and circuit boards for HVAC systems and works for one of the top companies in the country. He also has his own company. He'll ALWAYS have a job and need the internet because that's how he does his work, via the internet. That got me to thinking about other people who don't use the internet for their primary source of income. How likely would you be to get rid of the internet to save that cost? How hard would it be for you?

Isn't it something? The internet has become more a part of our lives than television, radio or even telephones! It isn't even something 'special' now like going out to dinner... it's almost a physical part of our lives these days!

I think that for most people it is a necessity on some level. If I didn't have it at home I still have to pay for it at my businesses. Also my son is 9 years old and he uses it for school. Nowadays we don't have the references layin around that we had when I was a kid, like the dictionary, encyclopidia, thesaurus etc. Heck I even throw out the yellowpages now.

I agree with you. The internet is so many things all wrapped up in one thing. Business can be conducted over it and money made, any kind of information we could possibly want can be located somewhere on it, we can even make phone calls and watch TV programs via the internet! It's as much a part of our lives as food and water these days. I'm sure if there was no more internet, we'd have 'internet rehab facilities' popping up everywhere for the withdrawal we'd all be going through!

No. I love the internet! I use it to communicate and keep in touch with people; learn things and find info; intertainment like games, vids, music, mylot; and plus I am going off to college next year and so I know I am really gonna need it for that. yeah there is no way I would give up internet unless I was absolutely forced to. Internet is becoming a greater part of our lives, with school, work, and even just everyday life. You cant do anything without internet these days. I think that it would be real hard for almost everyone. But the good thing is that phones have internet now and for a lot cheaper, so that makes it easier to have internet.

I would definitely keep the internet no matter what, the internet tends to be my sanity these days, all I do is go to work and go to school, the internet is my place where I can relax after work and school, it's a nice leisure thing. Also, my significant other and I must communicate through the internet, since he lives all the way in Sweden and I don't see him as often as I would like to (though I will for a month this December when I travel to Sweden ), so that is how we catch up. If worse came to worse I would result in writing letters, but the internet is very convenient, and postage takes a while and costs money as well. I can't remember what it was like when the internet wasn't a thing everyone had, it's definitely better than having television... I would drop my phone and tv connection before I would give up my internet haha. Happy mylotting and have a great night or day!

Haha! I should have read your response before responding to the one above yours. I mentioned the same thing you did about televisions and telephones! Yep, the internet is as normal a part of our lives these days as eating or breathing! I've gone without it for a few days when our electricity was out, but I was sooooooo happy when I got my lifeline back!!! What WOULD people do without it? Wander aimlessly around with a dazed look on their faces? Would there be 'internet rehab' places popping up all over the place? I don't even want to imagine a world without it!

Ah, the sacrifices we would make to keep our internet! I would do the same as you if it weren't for the fact that I know I'll always have it. The way I look at it, there seems to be plenty of ways to make enough money online to AT LEAST pay for our internet bill. As long as you can make enough to cover THAT bill, all will be right with the world.

I honestly don't remember the world without the internet. It's like everything became sooooo accessible after the internet. If you need a number for take out, go to the internet. If you need to send flowers to your gf or wife, go to the internet. If you want to travel, go to the internet. If you need up to date news, go to the internet. If you need to know movement of stocks, go to the internet. The internet actually made our lives easier and it actually gives you more time to do more things.

I'm hoping that I wont need to cut costs too much - for a few reasons... Fisrt, if we all stop spending, things will just get worse. Second, for the time being, both my and my husbands jobs are pretty secure, plus we have a home business that can pick up the slack if we need to do that more. Now, I just user the Internet for fun at home, but it wouldn't be one of the first things to go. We'd cut out dinners out first - we tend to eat out more than we should anyways. Other than that, I think we live pretty frugally so it'd be hard to say what would go next, but I need the internet for sanity reasons so that would not be on the top of my list.

No, all my income comes from the net. I also do tons of activism on the internet, which I consider "my rent for living on the planet" to quote Alice Walker. I won't give that up.

The internet actualy makes money and saves money for me. I would not. I also like it because it is entertainment. It would be very hard and terrible without it. I also hope they never start charging us to use it.

Egads! I hadn't even thought of that option! Charging for the internet! Noooo!!! I actually doubt that will happen. But then, I never thought I'd see the day when we HAD to pay for television, either. (You know, with everything going digital next year.)

Me too! I hardly watch TV at all. Besides that, there's a program you can buy (I forgot what it's called) where you can watch TV from your computer; change channels, everything just exactly like a TV set. And radio stations... we can already get them. Telephone calls and faxes can be made from the computer, so why do we even have those other things anymore? Makes you wonder, huh? LOL

I could never give up the internet! I love it too much! I come on here and get my e-mails, check the weather, pay bills, keep in touch with friends, and so much more! I have been using the internet since 1997 and I know I could not do without it ever again. I think society as a whole depends on the internet on a daily basis. It is more affordable now than ever, and with places like myLot you can earn a little money in order to afford the internet service. Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

Yep, we can make enough money, sometimes more than enough, to cover the cost of the internet service. Doing that, you're actually coming out way ahead of the game because of all the time, energy and money the internet saves us! We sure have become dependent on it. I have a hard time remembering back in the days before the internet came around! We all seemed to get along just fine but what did we know? LOL

Internet costs me $15 per month. I would just drive one day less and that would pay for a month of internet. No, I would not, unless I was in dire straights but I earn money from the internet so that would be silly.

i do not thnk i would rid of the internet if i need to cut cost. having hte net has become a part of my life now. i watch my news, soccer programs, games all online now. i would rather sell of my LCD tv and use the proceeds to pay for the internet if i have to. haha. there are so many activities related to online today so riding it may not be advisable, at least for me. so i will try my best o keep to it, even if i have to eat one meal less per day.

It really is a major part of our lives today. I know I couldn't do without it and that seems to be the consensus of most people. What we didn't have 25 years ago we can't live without today.

Yep, it sure is an invaluable source of information and entertainment! It helps shut-ins to be able to meet and make friends, gives us plenty of things to do in our spare time, is better than a library for information because it's right here at our fingertips, etc. etc.

Yes I would. I would get rid of all unnessesary things and the internet is unnessesary. I have a library about 3 miles away. I am a colomist for a magazine on the internet, but I know I could still meet my dedlines even if I had to go to the library to do it.

Because the Internet is a mind of information and can keep you occupied for a very long time,as well as being very interesting it is one thing that I would think very deeply about before I cancelled my Internet contract. The Internet package that I have is not an expensive one,it is a standard one,run of the mill, and it works out around four pounds a week so if you work out the time that I spend using and surfing the net then that is good value for money.but yet again for me the Internet is a hobby and I have no need of it for any work,so if the crunch came then it is not a necessity.I understand that there are many people who work from home and use the net daily to access email and to contact their clients,so for the businessmen and the businesses it is a must.

Yes, the internet is a wealth of information that would otherwise be much harder to come by. It wasn't around when I was young and I did just fine without it. I even resisted it for the first few years it was available. But, when my youngest son came to me at 7:00 p.m. one night and told me that he needed to write about an article he found in the newspaper for school the next day, we did NOT have the newspaper delivered and there weren't any left in the stores, I fooled him! I told him to look up our local newspaper on the internet and pick out an article from there. You should have seen the look on his face... total defeat. It was priceless! I'm VERY glad I got the internet because of things like that and I'd do whatever it took to keep it. Of course, if it was a choice between eating and the internet, I'd tend to side with eating.

I would not give up internet, it is just too important for me. I think economic crises were here and will be also in the future. This is just temporary situation which repeats in curves. Sometimes we are up sometimes down, that is is all. I think there are other things everyone can safe the money, turn of the lite every time you do need it. Use wisely air-condition, and things like that.

Yes, there are a lot of ways we can cut back to save even a little money; use less electricity, eat more raw foods instead of cooking everything or cook outdoors instead, travel less, buy store brands instead of name brands, make our own clothing, etc. I'd be able to go back to nature with one exception... the internet. As long as I have one working power outlet and the internet, I could be happy.
