im sorry i had to share this. i got in my email this morn. hope its not a repeat from someones discussion. its just so good! I thought you could enjoy this as much as I did. DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet." After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone — by placing an ad in the local newspaper. ADVERTISEMENT The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet." Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register. The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her. "The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision. "It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'" The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger. Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked. The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week — just for the feedback.

I love it!!! I just love it!!! Hahaha!! Go mom!! I think that if all parents were not afraid to make their kids upset and unhappy and want to be their parent and not their friend, we would have less troubles in the world. Parenting is not a popularity contest! LOL

When I first started to read this, I thought it might be about all the things mom do when their kids are growing up and how that makes us mean moms. Then at the end, it says something about, thanks to my mean mom, I grew up to do this, that and the other thing. Anyway, this was a nice surprise and Good for that mom! If more moms were that mean, we would have a lot less kids being killed in drunk driving accidents, ending up in jail, etc. We do not need to be friends with our kids at this age. There is plenty of time for that once they are grown. Go Mrs. Hambleton, and all those other mom's and dads our there that will stand up and say, This is how it's gonna be. !

Sorry that I didn't say much but I felt that was the most appropriate word and that was all I needed!! I take my hat of to her and it is easy for me to say because I am a mum. I don't think I could be that harsh to my kids, I'm a bit soft and I would have to warn them a few times before I would carry out my threat!!

I love it! Reminds me of when my son was a teenager and him and another buddy stold his moms car for a joyride. Unfortunate for them she had not stopped to get gas on the way home and they took off and ran out of gas about 10 miles down the road with no gas station in sight. They opted to walk back to the friends house and guess who was waiting for them when they got there because they had woke her up when they started the car. She called me on the phone ( I live about 10 miles from them) and told me what had happened and we devised a plan to make my son walk home, which he did, and guess who was waiting on him? LOL These kind of lessons teach teenagers things that they could never be told by anyone!

This woman is making a very big issue out of this. Though it certainly is a creative way to impress upon her son that she meant what she said and when he doesn't keep his end she gets her money out and quits the game. Teenage drinking and driving/any drinking and driving is a bad idea and more drinkers should face such consequeces early into their drinking years, it might stop some of them, At least she is taking some kind of action instead of turning a blind eye to his transgressions. He has probably learned a very valuable moral lesson too; "My money means it's my way." It is good to learn such things early on.

yes thats a good one about the money. good point. because a lot of kids dont get the idea they're not grown and you still foot the bill for them and their mistakes

bunnybon7, Simply a mom beyond words! I really admire her guts and ingenuity in her parenting methodology. Not only did she effectively put across her authority as a mother and the message to her son as well. Further, her son has no grounds of appeal and say when the majority are calling in to approve of her doing and consensus. What a mom! She should be awarded the Mother of the Year and/or Woman of the Year in my opinion. She rocks!

I like the twist in the e-mail. I have to say that I wanna be like her when I will become a mother. Though she is mean, I still believe her intentions are clear, and she just did not want her kid to break the agreement she had with him and the use of the car.

Hi bunnybon7, Well I can understand why she did it, these days teenagers don't seem to have a senxe of responsiblity and drinking and driving is very dangerous, no excuse saying that it belongs to a passenger, good for her, and I hope it teaches the son a lesson. Tamara
