Because we rely on each other to live. Sure we could live on our own if we had to but we thrive because we are a society. Most of us also need love and acceptance. We also bear children, and love and raise them. Some animal species do not, and some only care for their children for a short while. Some even eat their children. Our reliance on one another makes us a social animal, the fact that we love and befriend makes us social animals, and the fact that we seek acceptance, and guidance.

In sociology, men are indeed called social animals because we base our communities on social interactions. We basically do not live alone, but co-exist. We have our own roles to play in the society. We like to share opinions, exchange ideas, and just communicate freely. And yes, we are 'animals' -- of the highest form, that is. Happy myLotting to you!

It's because most people can't stand being alone. They prefer to be with others, and are naturally attracted to groups. They also tend to form hierarchies in which there are people whose opinions are considered important, and who are able to give orders and have them followed.

I am not sure why we refer to ourselves as being social unless it has something to do with us as humans being louder then the animals of the wild in the sense that we speak louder and faster and often communicate as part of a way to make a living. Even so, I don't think i've ever heard us referred to as social animals, maybe a social species but even so there's different definitions. I know for myself, I am not very social and am quiet.
