Brand name or generic products?

My friend thinks that I am wasteful because I prefer Charmin over generic and Campbells soup over generic. I will not buy generic potato chips either. I usually buy just brand name items compared to my friend who buys generic to save a few cents. What do you prefer, name brand or generic? What are the savings?

I buy a little of both but like you, toilet paper, soups, chips, and velveeta cheese are not some of them. I will buy generic milk because to me it tastes the same and its about $1.50 a gallon cheaper and we go through quite a bit of milk.

Wow, $1.50 savings on a gallon of milk! We go through a gallon of milk a day. I will have to try that, milk is $4.49 a gallon here.

You're not wasteful, you just know what you like and it works for you. Some things are worth paying a little more for. Believe me though I'm always looking for ways to save a few pennies. I buy some generic things and some brand names. Some of the generic foods just don't taste as good as the brand names to me. Plus a lot of times when the brand names are on sale and I have a coupon I'm actually paying a lot less than the generic brand.

I always bought Watkins Cheddar and Bacon dip mix for on top of our popcorn, it is $8.95 for a bottle of it. I've been trying other brands to see if I can find one for alot cheaper. No luck yet. I think that if I cut back on these types of products I would save dollars instead of cents.

When it comes to toilet paper, I agree with you...stick with the good stuff. Lots of foods that are generic are exactly the same as campbells~ just look at the ingredients and you will see they are exact! I always buy generic foods to save money. Saving a few cents here and there really add up.

I agree, it does add up. Grocery stores charge alot more for laundry detergent and dish soap than Wal-mart but alot of times I will buy them at the grocery store to save the gas money. To me, I think that it will equal out.

I don't like alot of the generic brands but some are okay....some store brands are just as good if not better then the name brands....but toilet paper....I have to have cottenell.....I love the stuff. And other things it just depends on what it is....condensed soup for cooking any brand will do....

I'm the same way with toilet paper. Only Charmin will do for me. It's silly since we just flush it away but that is what I like.

There are certain items, such as Campbell's tomato soup, that I buy because I have tried and don't care for the generic equivalent. I use French Vanilla Coffee Mate in my coffee. I will buy the store brand from only one store and not from others. It's kind of a trial and error thing. It also depends on why I am buying a certain product. I prefer Lays potato chips, but if buying chips for a children's birthday party, for example, I would most likely buy the store brand. For an adult party, I would buy the Lays. It is also a good idea to ask others about a product they are buying. I have done this many times in the grocery store and with friends. I have found some good generic items that way. It's a personal preference and if you prefer the brand name products over the generics, then by all means tell your friend to mind her own business, in a kind way, of course.

Campbells is also my soup of choice. During the summer we have cookouts every Saturday and my cousin brought generic hot dogs and they were actually good. She buys them all of the time. I should ask her where she gets them and the name of them instead of paying almost $4.00 for Ball Park. Good idea.

My view on it is I will try anything once. I don't have a problem giving a generic brand a try and if I don't like it I don't get it again but if it is good I will get it. These days I need all the help I can get to save some money!! But there are some things I won't budge on like dish soap for example, I am a Dawn user and always will be! It is basically a trial and error thing, find what works for us.

Yes, dish soap is always the same here too. Same with Tide and Snuggle. Somethings will always be the same. I cut back on the Watkins and Tastefully Simple that I used to buy so that saves alot of money.

Actuall, everyone like what they like, it would be a waste to buy something that you do not like and do not use it. With something like toilet paper I will buy the cheapest, but when it comes to food, I rather buy brand names instead of generic. I have bought store brand potato chips, and they were not bad, I usually buy brand name canned foods as well.

I always buy brand name canned foods too. I tried store brand kidney beans one time and they were hard. Chili is not real good with hard beans.

there are items that i buy cheap but when it comes to food i dont really buy the generic ones. i once tried the publix bacon versus the hornell brand that we always buy. it sucks. it's pure fat and it's too thin. i definitely saved a few cents but it's not worth it.

That's how I feel, you might save a little bit but is it worth it? I read an article about generics, it said that alot of the generics are acually made by the brand name companies and just named differently. But, I wonder where the quality goes when they do this.

Well, I must put in my two cents here ... Wasteful is not the right word your friends are calling you. If you're using the products, that's not wasteful. Perhaps you could be a bit ... *hesitation* spoiled. lol .. I say that lightly so don't get offended. :o) My husband and I are on a budget. Pre-JD (my son's name) we spent money like it wasn't nothing. Now that he's here, he's 2 1/2, we've cut back soooo much and are a bit more wise with our money. We are all about some store brand products. Girl, I love me some Laura Lynn (ingles). haha I buy the cereal in a bag because 1. It's cheaper AND ... you actually get more. I look at the price of things and if I can get more for my money then I'm going that route. I bought 2 weeks worth of groceries at Ingles (TWO WEEKS WORTH) for less than $50! Yes ladies, you're reading that right. Granted, we did have left overs a couple of times but we can do that in my family. :o) We ain't skeerd! lol ... I love my Ingles Advantage Card! We also have a Dollar General Market where you can get a loaf of FRESH bread for $0.80! You can't beat it. Milk at Piggly Wiggly is usually around $3. As you can see, I visit different stores for the savings. I live in a small town so I'm not driving every where. The Dollar General Market is right across the street from Ingles so ... it's a hop skip and a jump. I must admit though, I do buy a couple of items that are name brand. For example, there is no other ketchup like Heinz and no other mustard like French's. That's about it though. And there are Wal-Mart brand products, in my opinion, that are better than the name brand. OOhh, and the Clorox Green Works is the BEST all-purpose cleaner I've ever used! Okay, I wrote a book! :o) TTFN - Ta Ta For Now!
