http://www.tmz.com/2008/10/28/fruity-chump-goes-green/ this is too cute!! they taught the chimp to use vending machines at the zoo so people would give him change and he would buy his own juice.. well the chimp left the juice boxes everywhere making a mess so they put in a recycling machine that gave him money for every one he recycled.. is that cool or what?!?!

Just proves how much smarter chimps are than some humans! LOL You know, I think that would be an EXCELLENT way to force some people to recycle! I do it now, myself. I have to collect everything and take it to a recycling place, dump each different thing into different bins, like plastic, paper and bottles (AND each color of glass goes in a different bin). It takes time and I don't get paid a cent for it. I just do it to help my home... Earth. But, there are lazy people in the world who would rather just throw recyclables in with the regular trash or worse... throw it anywhere. If THIS type knew they'd get some money for recycling... INSTANT money, I bet people would be lined up at the machine!

It amazes me how many people do not even bother. I am a nut about doing it. I also carry ( when I remember) recycled bags to use instead of plastic ones. In fact as a Real estate promo, I have those bags with my RE info on it and I give them out at supermarkets.People love them. I think sometimes they have to be reminded. It is work though, I have huge bags set up to collect all my plastic and other things at home. I just made a run with soda bottles to the store today. At least with those you get money back. I think we need incentives. In one supermarket they give me 5 cents back per bag.

I should have made myself more clear. They gave me credit for using my bags and not theirs. I have all sorts of bags from canvas to plastic, that I use. I also buy the ones the store sells to reuse. They cost 99 cents but in a few months you make your money back.

Recycling - Something that has been preached to us since the 80s. But not many people is taking heed.
Ah... the chimp does not know squat about recycling. All he knows is that, when he does something, he gets a reward for it. In this case, put the juice box into that machine, get the shiny metal and put it into the other machine, and out comes the sweet juice! The motivation to recycle the boxes comes from the reward at the end of it. A visible and viable reward. I guess if you want to compare the way people recycle, you would have to have a lot of incentive for them to want to do recycling. Question is, who is willing to pay for that kind of motivation for people to recycle? I know you are going to tell me, the long term benefits of recycling. But you have to bear in mind, not everyone sees things in the long run like you and I do. Most of the people are only thinking about now and maybe tomorrow. The short term out look is what I call. If there is no juice at the end of performing a recycling task, why would they want to do it? Sad, isn't it?

Like I said, it is not a short term reward that is attractive to people. They could be like recycling their whole life and not see much results from it when it is time for them to leave this earth. Like I said, if everyone thinks like you in recycling, the world would be a better place. Problem is, not everyone is like that. Like the monkey, if the reward at the end of the effort is not imminent, what would motivate people to do it?

I think it's because most people are too lazy. right now, though in this economy it hasn't paid people to recycle. especially alluminum cans. I saved for 6 months and had over 10 bags of alluminum cans and it only got me $6.00. So I'm sure that also has something to do with it. Also the governemnt does not give any tax credit for recycling and if they did it might get more people's attention.

yeah and i was telling some one that thinks the whole save the earth thing is bs that even if we were lied to about climate change (which i do believe in) why not recycle?? i mean its not like the landfills are going away they are just growing and its less to make them grow

That is great. I am also amazed at the number of people who do not take the time to recycle. They just do not want to be bothered, or consider it too much work. Over the last 6 or 8 months, my husband and I haved reached a point where we recycle more than we throw away on garbage day. We have two recycle bins, and fill them both. Sometimes we will just have one or two bags of trash. For those who do not want to be bothered, my feeling is, if you can throw it in the trash, you can throw it in the recycle bin right next to the trash. The library I go to has vending machines, for soda and candy. Next to the machines are large recycle bins for paper, plastic and soda bottles.

yeah its so simple if people take a few minutes to start up a system with it.. i know we throw out a lot less now that we recycle everything possible.. the only annoying part is having to drive to the recycling place because of the hours and not ever having the car but to me its a small price to pay for a better future!!
