What do you give your dog to eat?

I have seen many people give their dogs chicken bones to chew and eat on. I have seen a woman cook a big pot of rice and garden peas to give to the dog to eat. I have seen dogs eat grits and anything that is cooked on the stove that is no longer wanted. Have you heard about the recall on the dog food that abolishes dog owners and people from feeding their dogs, dog food? So, what do you feed your dog?

Changing my dogs food causes her not to eat. So we stick with her dog food. Purina ONE. We learned the hard way that is it. She also gets carrots for her reward/snack. It is what the vet recommended.

Switching dog foods is not something that can be done easily- it should never be done quickly- usually a gradual change over a 2 week period is best or it can cause the dog to have digestive problems. If Purina One works for your dog, stick with it by all means. Out of all of the dog foods sold in grocery stores, that's the only one I'd even consider. They do sell Iams at grocery stores now too, and I buy that to feed to the squirrels in my yard... they love it lol Carrots are a great snack for dogs- I always recommend that to people especially if they have overweight dogs- the dog is still getting a treat, and it's a healthy one too. I buy the baby carrots for my dogs and they go crazy and all start dancing around when I get them out lol

I feed my dogs dog food. But I also have given my dogs table scraps. It is a nice treat for them. Something that I found interesting is that my aunt is a breeder and she has her two dogs now on a raw food diet. What is this? It is when the dogs are strictly on people food. They go to a store and get ground meat that is pre-mixed with things like vegetables and fruit. They also give them chicken legs and backs uncooked. Aparently this kind of a diet is very good for the dogs.

Hello! We feed our dog with dog food. That's the usual, I guess. It is common to see people giving other kinds of food to their dogs, like meat, rice, beans and all of that. Usually, what is left from dinner is what the dog is going to eat. Here nope. Here the dog always eat dog food. Sometimes he gets bread or any other things, but not in his meal time. Meal time means he is going to eat dog food. Perhaps we add a little bit of milk in it. There are times when he won't eat if we don't add milk. And after the meal, he receives dog desserts, like those small bones with taste of bovine. I have never about abolishing people from feeding dog food to their dogs. What are the dogs supposed to eat if that rule gets enforced? Respectfully, Munhozmib.

When we had a dog we pretty much just fed her dog food with some occasional leftovers. Dogs will eat pretty much anything but two things you are supposed to avoid giving them are chicken bones (can splinter in their throat) and chocolate.

I feed a variety of things. Blue Buffalo dog food, brown rice, various veggies (carrots, peas, green beans), and cooked chicken (no bones) or beef. Now and then they get some cottage cheese or eggs mixed in to it too. I see dogs who are on various diets everyday since I work at a boarding kennel. You can really tell the difference in a dog who eats a good diet and one that does not. Dogs who eat the brands of food that can be found in grocery stores always have much more "waste" product than those who eat good foods. For instance, a woman brought in her 6 dogs for boarding awhile back. These were all show dogs (2 Champions). I've seen these dogs in the past and they had always looked great- she fed a raw diet then. Money problems hit, and she couldn't afford to feed the dogs as well, so she switched them to a grocery store brand dog food. She had made the switch a couple of weeks prior to bringing them in for boarding, and from the day they came in, it was like a poop explosion. The entire facility smelled horrible due to these dogs- all they would do is poop everywhere. The previous times when she'd boarded them, she brought in a high quality dog food for us to feed so we didn't have to deal with the raw mixture, and the dogs were fine then too- but the grocery store brand made these dogs into massive poop machines. That wasn't the only problem though- their coats really started to suffer as well. They were losing massive amounts of hair- more than just the normal shedding. These dogs had always looked like they'd just stepped out of the show ring, and now appeared as if they'd been on a junkyard chain all their lives. Think about it. If you were to eat nothing but twinkies all your life, how would you look/feel? Feed a dog good food, he'll feel better, look better, and you'll have less to clean up.

Yes, you are right! Taking care of a dog, just as well as we take care of ourselves is a priority that must be met!

Our dogs get dog food most of the time, but they also get the scraps off the table, thats their treat. Sometimes we give our dogs chicken bones, but my husband said he don't want to give them too much, they might get stuck in their teeth, or they might not digest it very good. Yeah, some pets are really spoiled, I know this couple that will cook almost a complete meal for their pets, its crazy...

My dogs get dry dog food most of the time and sometimes a bit of canned food. If we give them scraps they get loose bowels, so we usually don't. When I first met my son's dad years ago, he had an old dog that we had to cook for. His vet prescribed a diet of ground meat mixed with brown rice and green beans. And that was back when there was no instant or quick brown rice. Used to take a good 45 minutes to cook the rice.

My dog gets dry dog food. Sometimes I will add a little bacon grease of hamburger grease. I never give my dogs chicken bones. I heard they're not good for them. Sometimes I give her table scraps but mostly just dog food. Thanksgiving I'll probably give her a ham bone if I have one.

My dogs love eating what my family eats; chicken, hotdogs, steak, etc., so we make sure to leave them a few pieces of what we are eating so we can feed them after we finish eating. I do have Canidae dog food for them to eat regularly but they still like eating human food better than the regular food. I did hear though that chicken bones should not be fed to dogs or cats since when they chew on it, the bones leave sharp edges and may hurt their mouth and intestines.

Cooked Chicken bones should never be fed, in any amount. Uncooked bones are soft, and fine for them to eat.

I was also told by several vets never to give my dogs real bones. They can splinter and cause problems like sticking in their throat. I would be too scared to do this. When I had my Lhasas, they were allergic to everything and I used to cook for them, ground turkey or chicken, rice, celery, carrots and peas. They lived very long lives on this. I think I am going to start doing this for my dogs now.

Oh, thanks for the info. I didn't know that cooked and uncooked made a difference. I was told that chicken and fish bones are no-nos, whether it is cooked or not.

book - cooking for dogs
I cook for my dogs. Meat with veggie and rice. I alternate it with dry dogs food. Believe or not, home cooking meal for dogs is less expansive now. You can not give chicken bones for your dog, it is not safe. There are some books about healthy cooking for dogs. I freeze what I cook for my dogs(for later) and it is working for me.

Here's a good site for information on raw feeding- specifically gives information on chicken bones. www.rawlearning.com . Check out the FAQ and it discusses the issue of raw vs cooked chicken bones. Cooked bones spinter and can harm the dog, raw will not.

My dogs eat dry food and sometimes table scraps but never bones because they can splinter and damage their insides. I will sometimes cook them something special--tonight I got a deal on crab and they're getting the broth on their food. They will go nuts and be very happy!

Before I answer I just have to say that giving dogs chicken bones can kill them, they can splinter and get stuck in dogs throats. I used to give my dog a piece of lunch meat and a peice of bread every morning when I was making lunches. Then sometimes after dinner I would give her a left over piece of meat. I would also usually give her a peice of pizza crust when we had pizza. I did not feed my dog a lot of people food, just pretty much what I mentioned, and occasionally some pop corn, she used to love to eat pop corn, I would throw it to her and she would catch it in her mouth.

just dog food with nice hot gravy. I found out that this is actually best for my dog, since the dog food helps it with fur and teeth
