Do you make fun of a commoner wearing hats and shades?

hats, shades, fashion, health and you......... - Is it just cool to wear hats?

Here in my country, most people kind of think that its just a fashion to wear hats or wear shades. It's just another extension of fashion accessories. But what they fail to understand is that these are utility props as well. Hats, sun glasses, shades - all in a way save us from direct UV rays and help with our health. It fact, in tropical countries like ours its important that we wear this as compulsion! I find people making fun of the ones who wear it. I agree, there are people who do it just out of style but here I am NOT talking about them. So, is it tickling to find a normal man, who is not so fashionable, wearing a hat or shades??

No, not really make fun since I know how harsh the tropical sun can be.^_^ But there are times when you least expect someone to wear those things you just cant help but chuckle and a bit conscious that you dont have those.LOL It would definitely do them good but Ive always been contented with just a good umbrella to protect me from the suns rays.^_^

You are smart BJ. Now after knowing the harmful effects of UV rays I am more careful and sensitive towards people wearing those. Carrying an umbrella always comes in handy in all seasons.

Not on shades Mimpi. It makes a lot of sense for people to wear hats especially in the hotter areas. And as much as i have found some people make fun of those who do wear hats, i desist totally from the idea. However i must say honestly that although there have been a few instances of people wearing it for the right reasons, the choice of hat like that used by magicians or the ones used on safaris has brought a smile on my face.

I don't think it is appropriate for people to make fun of others over any nondestructive thing that they do. The only people I think it is OK to ridicule would be bullies, and then that is the best way to take them down. I don't like my eas to get cold, and wear a hat at the first suggestion of cold weather. Moving to a hot climate eliminates the need to do that as often, but when I lived where the winters were chilly, people were for some reason bother by the fact that I wore something warm on my head. They would make stupid remarks such as "Are you THAT cold?" or "Do you REALLY think you need that hat?" to which if I bothered to reply at all I said, "Yes." That usually shut them up.

That's indeed the way to shut them up! In our country people do it mostly out of style and some common, normal person wearing eye shades or hats is ridicued highly. This is sad.

Hi nice discussion Mimpi...Yes this attitude is rampant in my place too...And I just cannot figure out why.In fact its absolutely essential to wear sun glasses and hats here, because we always have a hot and humid climate, and the sun beats down mercilessly in the day time. Its foolish to walk around without any protection.Only the tourits use head gear and glasses and get away with it..Locals have to put up with sneers and staring and even hear embarassing remarks.....Its ok though to walk around with the umbrellas open and some women even cover their head with their saree palluv or churidar shawls.....

Hi Roseo That's the point I was trying to make here. It's absolutely necessary in our country but I am afraid people who do that are ridicules highly! May be its a huge culture difference but we need to change with the global warming affecting the earth more. And covering head with pallu or head scarf makes so much sense! May be it was introduced as a gesture of women being sub servient but see how they were saved otherwise as well!

I suppose its how you think of it.You must remember that not everyone is the same. The saying one man's meat is another man's poison applies to many things in life.If you are a fan of western movies, you will see some especially those starring Clint Eastwood, where the lead character (Clint himself)will emerge from the desert on a blazing hot day, wearing nothing less than an awful looking overcoat.Dirty and unshaven,he can make you feel hot and grimy yourself, especially if you are watching the film on a sweltering hot Summer day.

I don't make fun of anyone wearing anything. It is a very personal thing. If they feel comfort it is not a problem with anyone. And as you say it is very essential to wear something to beat the heat and sun whether he is a commoner or someone. Unfortunately the most necessary things are considered a luxury or laughing matter here.

A "commoner"? Queen Mimpi has entered the forum! It is certainly wise to be covering up like this but we can still be fashionable while doing it. What gets a chuckle from me is when people wear styles that are totally unsuited to their face. You sometimes see people with sunglasses that resemble aviator goggles or fly's eyes and take up 50% of their face; or someone dressed very smartly with this totally unrelated style of hat on their heads! These things do make me laugh now and then. I don't wear sunglasses because I don't have any with prescription so can't see. And I don't own a hat either. Silly me actually because I really should and will probably pay for this when I am older.

My husband was brought up in South India and he finds it most amusing that I wear sunglasses whenever I go out in the sun as he has never bothered with sunglasses in his life. I have always done so as I value my eyesight and want to protect it from the harmful rays of the sun. I have expensive designer sunglasses but they are sunglases with good UV protection so I don't care what anyone says I want to protect my eyes even if it's winter and the sun is out. Sunglasses for the sake of fashion is acceptable but personally I wear them to keep my eyesight safe. When I visit India and wear sunglasses, people do stare and seem to mock me but I don't care! I get stared at anyway when I out there regardless of me wearing sunglasses or not LOL!

see, that's what I had meant! Couldn't have expressed it better Mili. Here , people sneer at the ones who use it! That's so off putting! The awareness is too less and people seem to have wrong priorities. I am myopic and wear glasses all the time. The glasses are coated - that serves the purpose. Thanks for getting me right and expressing it so well.

Hi Mou well, people here in our area do understand that it need to cover head and neck while going out in sun, specially in summer. but sure not using hats, glasses as its not culture so they wear turban or some sort of cloth and drink such thinkgs which fight Hot weather like "Lassi" "Satoo" etc but sure now with change of dress code, its coming into society to use Hats and glasses and sure no such cooments are given, unless u go to very remote area, where there is no electricity. TV, Media, Film introduces every thing at every level Take care

I think if a local resident had to wear a hat her they would attract a lot of attention. Nobody bothers about the tourists wearing all sorts of wierd outfits or headgears but nobody would like a local to be wearing this kind of stuff. I think if I had to see a local wearing a hat it would definitely bring a smile on my face too....I dont know whether it would be just a smile or a laugh behind the smile...

Maybe I would smile if I see a commoner wearing a hat and shades at night. I mean who needs shades at night. But of course I would not laugh at his face. And one more thing is I would first check if he's blind or something because i think only blind people or with eye disease like sore eyes wear shades at night and those who wants to hide something with his or eyes wear shades. But I would definitely look at this person because if he or she is not any of the ones I had mentioned, maybe he or she is up to something bad and want to hide his or her intentions.

I usually don't bother with what people wear (just as I don't want them to bother with what I wear). But I guess they make fun (atleast in my home town) is because umbrellas are the norm there...and if one carries an umbrella...one wouldn't need a hat or shades. lol..I get chided for not wearing a hat/cap (for me or the kids).

You are very much right in your assessment that people wear hats and sun glasses etc. more to protect themselves, rather than wearing it as a fashion statement. I do not believe in making fun of those people, who wear hats and sun glasses etc., because I believe that they would have their personal reasons for wearing the same. I feel, if a person is wearing hat or say dark sun glasses in the day time (afternoon) he would have used the same for protecting himself from the sunlight, however, if I find someone wearing dark sun glasses say in the evening time when the sun is about to set, then it looks to me a bit amusing (however, even he is known to me, I do not point it out to him). I observe that there are very less number of persons (including women) those who wear hats and sun glasses at odd hours, may be to enhance their outlook. I myself do not wear my dark glasses in the evening, if I have to use glasses in the evening, specially while driving, I immediately switch over to colourless glasses. (I keep two pair of glasses with me, while driving). Have a great weekend! How are you?

You have validated my point and that's a good way tell it. I feel, the consciousness is too little and we need to work on our outlook as well. At the end of the day, we are reduced to being stupid, isn't it!

I am not fashionable. I know nothing about hats and shades. I wear a cap when I go to the farm because it protects me from the sun. It is not a fashionable cap, just a regular cap that someone gave to me as a promotional giveaway. Cheers!!

I don't care who you are, if you are out in the sun, you SHOULD wear hats and sunglasses! Skin cancer is on the rise, maybe caused by the Earth losing the ozone layer. UV indexes are up. Other than your eyes or head, you can wear a sunscreen lotion but you need to protect your scalp and eyes as well. I bet people who make fun of other people for wearing these things will one day be crying because they have some form of skin cancer! What goes around comes around... that almost always happens!

Over here, people wear caps, hats, sunglasses even when it's not sunny or bright so I don't think about it. But yes, everyone should be aware of the harmful rays and how to prevent from getting skin cancer. My sister once told me this story about a guy she saw shopping at a mall in the Philippines when she went there for another visit. It was very hot and here he was wearing a turtleneck shirt and boots. She taught it was memorable as it warranted her telling me afterwards.

That's the culture difference dear. In our country people wear it more out of style to make a fashion statement. They find it cool. And when some ordinary man who does not follow FTV (LOL...) wear hat or eye shades people think either he is bit nuts or he is wearing it show off his British loyalty!! That's quite off putting actually.

i think out of necessity comes fashion.. we have to wear clothes and not just the skins of animals that our long ago ancestors wore. clothes are a necessity but it's also a way to express yourself, for many people anyway. some of us just stick to the basics! sunglasses and hats serve dual purposes and where i live fashion is definitely one of them. here most people who wear hats are men, generally baseball caps and it's not to keep the sun off because they wear them indoors as well. sunglasses, on the other hand, are useful everywhere. especially when the sun is shining in your eyes and you're trying to drive! i would never make fun of a man for wearing sunglasses or a hat. like you said, in tropical climates it's extremely important to protect yourself!
